de Boer was amongst Melbournes best today. Started promisingly but it's hard to understand how someone with his experience repeatedly takes people high or rides them into ground. His field kicking also was poorly directed

Suban was sloppy in the tackle too but his good stuff was valuable and is good to know we will be seeing this week in week out from now on

I think De Boer played well to his strength but that walters and maybe Pav should rest. Why Mzungu isn't an instant starter is beyond me, he is an excellent player, so he comes in to bolster the midfield and because he kicks goals. Also Crozier or Duffy in whoever has better form.

Just out of interest, what is his (MDB) strength?

Ballas seems to be down on confidence, he's never been a 1 touch player and you can't fault his defensive efforts but he hasn't been very effective offensively this year.

Does he just need more game time to sort himself out? If Walters misses a week it might give Ballas a bit of extra room in the forward line to run around and regain some form.

I question that too :(
Cant seem to tackle without giving away a free. Struggles to kick 40 metres. I try hard to like him as a player, but its hard to see what his value actually is.
I think I would prefer Sheridan in for MDB. Can play forward, can play on a small forward, can run thru the middle. Ideally, a fit Gu plays instead of either of them.

One of his jobs around stoppages is to block and create space for our other midfielders. Which you dont get stats for.

He would of had a good game if it wasn't for his FA's.

To be fair - he had a sloppy tackling game yesterday, but until that he was topping our tackle count and was not really looking too bad in the FA column. He's a super hard body; he's fast; he can get to lots of contests and puts lots of pressure on both the guy trying to get the ball out and / or the ball carrier on the outside; he blocks and creates space and he is as tough and hard as they come. It's all the stuff we don't really see that he's good at, and no doubt what RTB loves. It's those passes that can't hit a target from 35m, and the snaps that barely go 25m and the slow decision making that holds up the play that frustrates us. I guess RTB thinks that what he brings on the pro side of the table outweighs what his detractions are on the con side. And he probably knows better than most of us I would think...

Why are there so many posters on this board with the memories of a goldfish?

Each week one or two players are targeted on the basis of a few moments of play. This week even the stupidest posters have to give credit to Suban. Next week it will be the Sutcliffe or de Boer haters that get egg on their faces.

We are playing the best football in our history. How about enjoying that?

Being able to actually hold on to a tackle and not being shrugged aside like a b$^#, unlike Sutcliffe Croz and Neale. That said I love the other three and MDB can't kick as well as the average 14 year old.

Speaking of De Boer's tackling.

Now me being a Pom I never got the chance to play footy as a kid so I'm not really sure what kids are taught in regards to tackling technique but it seems to me when De Boer goes in for a tackle his arms come up and over like a butterfly swimming motion.

I'm guessing this is to hopeful pin the arms or strip the ball. When things are moving at pace though this type of tackle can be mis-timed and can result in a free kick for high contact.

I've noticed with Ballas however that apart from leading his tackles with his head his arms come up and under or at least from the sides more often than not.

Are the players taught tackling technique or is it more just about what feels natural to the player?

Tackling is like contested marking, difficult to teach but the gist is to aim for the hips.

Geez everyone is harsh on Deboer. Thought he was instrumental in quite a few passages on play. 6 clangers and 5 FA's is really only 1 clanger. A free against counts towards the clanger tally.

Aside from some sloppy in the backs I thought he was quite good....1 or 2 goals too.

Agree,he is there to crunch and use his strength.None of the young uns have his brutality.

Am i on my own here in saying that i think Cam Sutcliffe is really struggling and needs a week at least in the twos?

In - Mzungu, Crozier, Sheridan
Out - Walters, Sutcliffe, DeBoer

Unlikely to be three changes however. So more realistically Sutcliffe will stay in and either Gu or Sheridan misses.

I personally think Pav will be fine to go and probably could have played out the game yesterday, however with the game in hand its not really worth it. Sonny looked a little worse and i can see him needing a weeks break.

I thought Sutcliffe's second half was excellent and I also think he has done a VERY underrated job shutting down his man this year playing on players ranging in sizes from Gartlett to Stanley. For mine Duffield has struggled since the game against Geelong and he doesnt offer the run and carry that Sutcliffe does. I think Pav and Walters will play as they booth looked fine after the game. If it was up to me id go Gu, Sheridan in: De Boer and Duffield out. Sherro to be sub. If Pav is injured De Boer keeps his place in 21 with Sherro to still be sub.

Whenever Pav goes out we tend to just change it up a bit with alternating ruckmen spending more time in forward, or our bigger-bodied midfielders like Fyfe and a greater spread of midfielders become more goal conscious. It's not necessarily wrong but feel that like having Taberner as second tall we need to keep structure and bring in a tall sole-forward. I understand the futility of this argument as our only other option is Apeness who hasn't been performing but I feel this holds our form in greater stead come finals.

I'd agree except I think Clarke has also shown a few better signs up forward and it really sounds like no one is putting their hands up to high in the wafl (of which I've half seen a Freo preseason game) anyway I'd still try Clarke pretty much solely forward with Tab & Mayne plus there's always Fyfe being.... well 2014 Fyfe, If we need anyone bring in Griffin to cover Clarke's ruck duties and if we can do without Griff bring in a Mzungu or Sheridan

Excellent point! Love DeBoer's aggressiveness, but he does have a tendency to get pinged quite bit for "too high." Interesting how our tackling machine, Chris Mayne, doesn't seem to give away many frees.
