Autopsy Round 7, 2023 : Hawks go down to Dogs

Agree with those that have said the backline set up was odd.

Weddle needs to run.

The backs played very negatively as well. CJ, Sicily and Weddle all seemed very focused on shutting down their opponents as all costs (as opposed to balancing attack and defense.)
Constant changes are unsettling to

Just seems like we got the setups wrong, is this Sam Mitchell led or the new bloke?

We only kicked 4 goals from about the 4th minute of the second half. That's actually terrible.

Different story if we had the clear free kick paid and mark paid to Brocky.

The scoreline flattered the Dogs IMO. Should have been much closer.

Duke really came alive in the last quarter. Only had 3 kicks to 3QT. Though was good on the inside up to that point. Couldn’t find much space before that though.

Day looked like he’d hardly missed a beat outside of the odd bad ball use.

Our mids are going to be extremely good when we are able to run out full games. We are smashing teams in the middle. It’s been pretty much the only thing going right.

I’m not touching the recruitment stuff because it’s been rehashed here 7,000 times and the mods will shut it down. However recruitment outlay still doesn’t mean the player should have supporters calling for their heads because they’ve had a game that isn’t at their stellar best but was still solid enough. The past two weeks Chad hasn’t turned in performances that would warrant his selection to be questioned.

I would disagree with this. Wingard isn't adding anything and is pretty much ineffective out there so is as likely a candidate to be dropped as any player. Also, the club sold the farm to get him and it is not just that he is going OK (he really isn't) but he has never played at the level we traded for and are paying for. So, that is a very big issue for the club and members. It is unfortunate for all involved, but it is the reality of the situation.

This is true but doesn’t mean he should get the laser focus every time we lose. Yes he turns in some poor games for us and the soft tissue injuries have been bloody frustrating - but the last two weeks he’s hardly been playing like he’d be dropped and the vitriol keeps on coming. I’ve heard it in person at games when he’s doing basically nothing wrong and some pinheads just vent their spleen at him. It’s just odd.
There was a point where Wingard got it on the wing, a bloke nearby yelled out "Do something Wingard!". Literally 2 seconds later, he hit up Breust in the forward 50. Didn't hear from him after that.

When we were winning flags or contending each year we would regularly get smashed in clearances and Clarko would constantly say “we don’t care about clearances”

We have now become the clearance kings and hopefully that will turn into some gold soon enough.

Even with that one - 3 goals in an entire half and 5 from the 4th minute of the second quarter is no good.

For sure. We were gassed. Lewis could barely get out of a jog and the Dogs triple teamed him and showed no respect to our other forwards as they compressed the field to hem us in the back half.

Had no one who could run or mark the outlet ball and they ground us down.

When we had the ball they rightfully blocked off the corridor and the switch. Forced us long down the line each time.

Great coaching by Bev. It's easy to make moves when our team only has a few moving pieces. As the boys get stronger and more experienced, Sam will have more moves to play with. Still very one dimensional.

It was Nash or Lewis that gave it to him ant one stage and pointed to him where to kick it because they had better vision, so he proceeded to not do that. He doesn’t make good decision consistently anymore and his leg speed and poor kicking for goal means his days are numbered

Nah this is just your whipping boy target taking over. Chad wasn’t exceptional but wasn’t poor - he’s not getting dropped off of today’s performance.
What is annoying me about Chad this year is the constant slowing the play down when on a potential fast play which allows all the defenders to get back

Thats what happens with young teams they gas out .
We need another per season or 2 and 40 games .

Wont be the last time it happens , is what it is .

It was frustrating to watch albeit a few clear calls missed. Our midfield dominance waned and our defenders lacked the composure to rebound with any effectiveness. They constantly had a spare cutting off out forwards, backing themselves to win the contest. The good news is that as this midfield unit grows clubs won't be able to do that.

Our forward structure was fine, it was just a bad time for some players to play stinkers. Lewis was great but missed chances then was worn like a glove. Greene played his worst game and Ramsden wasn't ready to wrestle with Jones/Keath. Moore really isn't troubling the scoreboard this year which is a step back from last.

More than anything Breust's injury messed us up bad. Against GWS and Adelaide we really troubled them with our forward pressure. Having Bruest unable to get out of a jog doesn't help that.

We had such quality intercept players back then - Gibson, Hodge, Lake, Stratton, Burgoyne, Birchall, etc.

I reckon we have a group that is as talented with intercepting - DGB, Weddle, Sicily, Scrimshaw, CJ and Impey. We really just need them to develop.
