Autopsy Round 7, 2023 : Hawks go down to Dogs

Ramsden has potential, but was a deer in headlights in defence. Kicks 3 first quarter goals if the umps pay what is actually there

Noodle stepped up. Starting to get confidence back in himself

Lewis makes us look a lot better

Duke is starting to figure out how to break a tag without having to be moved forward

I'm actually rather salty at the coaches. Seamus/Hardwick had been doing a great job shutting down their smalls. I assume we subbed Seamus because we wanted more run from half-back but Scrimshaw didn't provide that and is much more lax defensively.

We also chose to make that decision early in the third despite Breust being unable to get out of a jog, Greene having 0 impact and Ramsden running himself ragged trying to keep up.

We've had a really good three weeks results be damned. I'd say we have won 8/12 quarters without getting the chocolates.

Just lack the polish to capitalise on our dominance and lack the discipline to wrestle momentum back when we lose it. All the hallmarks of a young talented side still finding their feet.

40 more games into this lot and we are playing finals footy. 100 more and we are competing for flags.

dont get me started on Wingard should have been subbed out and pretty sure majority of Hawk supporters would also be frustrated with him, just seems to have no confidence 🤷🏻‍♂️

Nah this is just your whipping boy target taking over. Chad wasn’t exceptional but wasn’t poor - he’s not getting dropped off of today’s performance.

If Mitchell was fit. There were far worse. Rammo, CJ, Morrison, Greene,

In game coaching was questionable

Why sub Seamus out? He was defending well and giving us good drive

Also our ball movement got completely stifled after half time without much plan B - though Doggies are much more experienced and better than us right now I suppose

Some great 1 on 1 scalps today for the big Noodle and Nash today.

Beating arguably the best performed ruckman of 2023 and a champion in Bont on his 200th.

Take a bow to the both of them.

He definitely played his best football at Port Adelaide and if we had our time again I would have definitely kept Burton and pick 15. But this is where we are at now.

Shiels was able to do a job on an opposition player, was stronger, quicker and tougher. Morrison is a better kick though.
Both are neat players without weapons. You don’t have to have a clearly identifiable weapon to play AFL footy.

Correct.

Not the first time this has happened.

We seem to go into the game with a set plan, and it’s been good to see that change from week to week (especially defensively), to see improvement over the past month.

However we aren’t responding to opposition tactical changes from quarter to quarter (yet).

Looks like North are making a serious play for Harley Reid v the Demons. Suddenly the Hawthorn loss today is looking a lot better than it was half an hour ago.

lots of positives again, Day, Lewis and Nash

negatives just not taking advantage when we are on top - think we lost the game by the same amount as we should have been up by at 1/2 time had we taken our opportunities.

Wingard was better than Moore today, without question.

Boys were clearly tired. We had the same chase as the Adelaide and GWS games but couldn't stick the tackles.

Gassed by halfway in the second quarter and fell away when the Doggies started to triple team Lewis who was spent.

Couldn't get out of our back half.

This is true but doesn’t mean he should get the laser focus every time we lose. Yes he turns in some poor games for us and the soft tissue injuries have been bloody frustrating - but the last two weeks he’s hardly been playing like he’d be dropped and the vitriol keeps on coming. I’ve heard it in person at games when he’s doing basically nothing wrong and some pinheads just vent their spleen at him. It’s just odd.
