Reckon the one Geelong person who wasn't happy with Ruggles' game was Jed Bews.

Agreed - but now its u to Bews to lift. He's seen what is needed. Ruggles for all his success, will tire at some point or get sore. Hopefully no time soon, but it will happen. Even though he's not a first year player, the step up is big.

There will be chances still for Bews should he want it bad enough.

Go Catters

Josh Hunt with skills

Built like Tarzan and actually plays that way too.

When Selwood got hammered by Robinson final 5 mins left in the game, the first bloke who ran in to take on Robinson one-on-one was Ruggles and he was ready to go on with it to.
Love that and it shows he has a mean streak to his personality if rattled which is exactly what the team needs.

I think we might actually have found two pretty good players in Menegola and Ruggles. Early call because we only seen a tiny flash of Menegola and not much more of Ruggles but I could see both being 100 gamers.

Early call yes..but I cant disagree. Ruggles first up was very assured..he will be tested against quicker faster more experienced teams but at his age could be a good add for our backline which is getting close to its used by date.

Menegola..well we just haven't seen enough but be great if he can play some sort of mid role complimenting Guthrie.

We have 4 father-sons coming through in 2018

That very "ambit".... potential FSons would be better , who knows if they are going to be good enough etc. Ruggles is an interesting counter point to that. He say he was not ready at 17/18... if a FS is the same and matures that late ..then the FS rights mean little

Nothing stops a team from f/s a 23 year old

Just what is the rule on that... Im under the impression that if you pass on the player once then you have done your FS rights... so in a case like this a Ruggles type as FS..not draftable at 18..then by 23 we would not have any rights to him.

In fact I'm not sure on an age stipulation for FS but I cant remember a mature age Father Son being taken.

Jacob Brennan was drafted under the father son rule for pick 62 in 2010 a couple of months before his 21st birthday

He did that against Freo in the NAB as well, when Cocky slammed Johnson and Zac the hack was throwing a tantrum... Ruggles was in there right back in his face.

I think there are no issues with him having any mongrel about him

This is potentially an odd thing to pick out

But I really like the fact he has seemingly improved at VFL level as well... and what I mean is that he was B&F there last year... being now in a full time environment he SHOULD improve.. he looked good in the NAB, but when not picked in the seniors he went back and carved it up at that level.

That is a sign he has improved further on last year... and likely will continue to improve.

Unlike some that get dropped I think he will demand selection again instantly .... not just go through the motions

so 20 21 is doable... but was he past over as a 18 year old? Or do he not list for draft?

To be honest I don't know a couple of minutes of google searches show that he wasn't an elite junior.
Here's an article about Steven Morris before he joined Richmond, he played in the TAC cup, I doubt that they'd be many who play at that level and don't nominate for the draft in there draft year. Another article said he had spent 4 years in the SANFL trying to get drafted.

BLOODS defender Steven Morris today stepped out with Richmond as the Tigers consider the 22-year-old as a father/son draft prospect.

Richmond sought permission from the AFL for Morris to train with the club at Punt Road today.

The son of Kevin Morris, who played 110 games with the Tigers in the 1970s, is eligible to join Richmond under the father/son rule, but the club has made no promises.

Though he didn't join Richmond via the father son rule, they downgraded pick 14 to pick 15 to get him as a pre-listed player from GWS (I think) they probably felt that it was cheaper than a 3rd round pick or what ever he would have cost to get him.

And Cowan. Can't see either getting near a game while Ruggles reproduces that form.
And that is a really good problem to have.

I managed to see the replay yesterday and it was hard not to be impressed with his first outing.

He looks like he is operating under the motto of "never give a sucker an even break".

What I want to see from the guys battling it out for that back flank/pocket position is an upping of their output because Ruggles doesn't look like he intends on giving his spot in the side up easily based on that debut and he also has the air of no nonsense about him which is a good trait in a defender I think.

Did you interpret that from the game ? Original type thought Piv. ..or is from other stuff as well..

There is no shortage of titbits of colour ... really keen , always asking for info , having to be told that he is an AFL level player now and train accordingly ... then commentary in game.. DB taking about his well lived in head , DR mentioning a bit of nasty.. it all adds up to a guy with some flavour.
I dont think he is a vanilla type our Tom.

Loved his game yesterday. He seems to be a good decision maker with poise. He looks like he's been part of the team forever!

That aspect was remarkable considering it was his first game. Just slotted in and his team mates seemed to have confidence in him.

Have we worked out an appropriate nickname yet?

With a name like Ruggles who needs a nickname?

Surely we would hope for BOTH to come on and be in the same team, right?

The 'Rug':eek::)

Yep. Really hoping Bews can force Mackie or perhaps one of the taller guys out and think we will be better for it.

Why? Mackie has played very well ... been cool calm and effective.

Bews has a very long way to go to reach Mackie's class as a footballer.

Because we still need more run and speed to come out of defense and guys like Bews can provide that and are the future. Not saying he should be gifted anything but yes I want him to force his way in the side then be too good to drop.

Good point.........but you gotta get the bloody ball first which Bews doesn't ........but hey who gives a **** about that.......he can run fast!.....put him in!

Seems you use the same flawed thinking as the Josh Walker lovers...he's young....our future...he's got great hands and a big tank....

Yea sure, but he can't freaking kick.

Bews will soon have more than Mackie in his way...there's a couple of half back draftees who with another pre-season under their belt will be pushing for consideration...Bews is a depth player and not much more.

Room for both if Bews is good enough.
Not until 2017 when Boris retires.

Bews' biggest limitation is he doesn't find the ball or do anything particularly damaging on the few occasions he does.

He is not in the same solar system as Mackie, who is still - despite the sceptics - playing very good footy.
