Opinion Sack Hinkley 10 - UnTENable

The closest comparison I can think of is Gareth Southgate as England manager (currently 8 years). However, if he doesn’t win the upcoming Euros it’s likely his time will be up.

But with majors being played every two years, it would be half of the time when comparing his case to Hinkley’s.

Yeah I feel the same. At the time he was a super passionate and intense coach and that translated well to the performances.

Now he's a blobfish.
I have long been of the opinion that kokhead saw Hinkley's response to Hart as a poor public image that didn't suit his agenda and that soon after `Agro' Ken was got at either directly, or by someone acting under his instructions with the carrot at the end of the stick being a contract extension that unfortunately evolved into multiple and unearned contract extensions, and a bloke who now wouldn't look out of place standing behind the sultan's throne waving a fan made from ostrich feathers.

We haven't beaten anyone of the top 5 in premiership betting. We are in fact ranked equal 8th. That's a pretty good indication of how we are going.

....
That's a good indication of how the punters think we are going.

I know everything gets rewritten under the prevailing and justified ‘sack Ken’ theme of the board, but let’s not pretend people weren’t absolutely gargling his balls around the time of the Hart incident.

Well one thing from all that crap was correct - Ken will never give up...... until he's bled Port Adelaide dry of every last dollar.

One of my earliest posts on Hinkley, posted 1 July 2013, nothing has changed:

I've been reluctant to criticise Hinkley but he doesn't seem to know what to do when the opposition get a run on. That's killing us.

One of my earlier ones has not aged as well. I defended Hinkley and blamed the players for a bad result:

I was there too. I'm not so sure. I don't think it's coaching that makes Kornes look across the ground first. It's not coaching that leads to Westhoff brain farts.

The only signifcant coaching decisions I saw at play were Cassisi as a defender - he's not a shadow of one.

It will take a couple of seasons to improve skills and decision making. We do really need Butcher or Salter in the forward line to give Shulz support.

*tugs at collar uncomfortably

Interesting read here. Thanks for sharing.

Moyes wasn’t despised when he was at Everton and consistently exceeded expectations with little resources at his disposal. Also, Moyes won a cup with west ham last season (not the PL)
Yeah he won a Europa Community League - winner out of the Europa League losers who are the losers of the Champions League. He won some Community Cup too - pre-season comp.

Thanks for not putting names to those posts. Just in case. There could be some very red faces.

Aside from his brief stint at man united, Moyes has never managed a team with a squad that could compete for a title.

Ken Hinkley has coached Port with squads that were good enough to win a Premiership (2014, 2015, 2020 and 2021) but they have always fallen short.

Southgate, similar to Hinkley, has had the players to win but hasn’t got over the line.

I wasn't even posting about it but I honestly think it showed a level of ruthlessness and intensity that we needed. Ken was a good coach who cared about success in 2013 and 2014.

The comparison that strikes me is with Tony Gustavsson and the Matildas.

The Matildas under Gustavsson:

  • rely on one or two stars to overcome tactical ineptness;
  • keep playing underperforming, older, players (like Van Egmond, Yallop, Polkinhorne) despite their abilities fading;
  • have a complete lack of faith in any younger player to play a role (as opposed to be an immediate star);
  • will not change to adapt during a game; and
  • is vulnerable to teams that park the bus and counter-attack.

I agree. I think people were justified in these views at the time. We shouldn’t forget the absolute elation of becoming good now then. Of course, things change, and people are allowed to change their opinions accordingly. Who could have foreseen that he would become a meek, management-speak dweeb?

EDIT: As such, I also think folx are being a bit cheeky when counting these years in the ‘12 years of failure’ timer. In those years we had the thing that we’re asking for now: hope. The reason we need a new coach is because we need someone to inject, again, what Ken and others did, at that stage.

Yeah, the Hart incident and charging onto Subiaco to get Boak to wrangle his players to keep celebrations to a minimum in 2014 was great.

Showed a coach who was dedicated, hungry and obsessed with winning the ultimate prize regardless of situational positives.

Now we have a lobotomised oaf who repeatedly smirks, smiles and laughs amidst devastating losses, and behaves like a bogan who won a free lapdance after unexpected minor round wins his team actually shows up for.

I don’t think there’s any reason to name and shame individuals, these were the prevailing views for most Port fans at the time, on this board or otherwise. Simply an exercise in observing how drastically things shifted.

I was pretty bullish about the early run and gun style of play more so than the cult of Hinkley but I wouldn't be surprised if there were some embarrassing posts from me out there. May they rest in peace.

A style of play that routinely dismantled GOAT Hawthorn, but was voluntarily done away with in favour of methodical ball movement and various degrees of forward press that routinely fails against everyone bar the dregs of the comp.

I commend you for knowing who any of those people are.
