SANFL Trials 2009

This is where you are wrong. You ask any player, coach or supporter what it means to either pull on the tigers or the double blues or the redlegs gurnsey or wear it in the crowd and they will tell you that the traidtion is alive and well. Those gurnseys have MEANING!!!!!! WE CANNOT LOSE THAT!! It is still there, look at the crowds, look at the strength of the comp compared to the other 2nd tier comps. A lot stronger in so many facets. Modernise it anymore and it becomes more and more plastic. I'm sorry but you can improve the game in many ways but once the tradition, passion and history goes, what is the point?

The AFL is always going to be the AFL, the ultimate aspiration to a young player but lets not kill everything else in the process because before long there won't be a single inch of grassroots left in this country if we keep trying to change things too much.

Having a crow’s reserves side playing in the SANFL as the 10th side won’t change any of that.

The history of Glenelg won’t change, Centrals will still be 50 years old, Port vs Norwood will still be special and the GF side will still play on ANZAC day. It will only enhance the history of football in this state and eliminate the bye by having a 10th club.

Having a crow’s side won’t disrupt the history or any tradition – well not any more than merging Woodville and West Torrents or allegedly creating a new entity called Port Adelaide Magpies.

There will never be a Crows reserves side. To may issues that can't be resolved the main one being where you get the extra players from. At one point last year we only had something like 6 players available for SANFL selection so its not a matter a of a couple of top up players as mid year you would need about another 20 to actually cover injuries and form. I have never heard anyone come up with a satisfactory answer as to who these players are. They can't be young players from around the competition as then you have far to much movement form season to season.

Personnally I think the younger players are better off playing with the likes of Gallaghers, Massie, Sheedy, Backwell ect as far as leadership is concerned. A reserves side would also really struggle.

I don't think an SANFL club has ever really held back anyones aspirations and 90% of the time the SANFL clubs follow the wishes of the AFL side. Even with a reserves side you may have to play a certain player out of position due to player mix. Certainly over recent years if an AFL player is good enough they get promoted adn play in the prefered position and generally those that are playing reserves are just not up to it. Sellar last year is a prime example of this.

All these combined with many other mentioned just stack up to much for it to ever be viable which is a good thing.

I don't think the Crows adding a SANFL team will destroy the histroy of clubs, but Port wil then want all their players with Port or a team of their own.

It would thin out the SANFL too much, and the SANFL prides itself on quality.

Collingwood solves it in the VFL.

ok update on Rory

Rory Sloane (knee): Strained a medial ligament in SANFL trial on Saturday (6 weeks approx).

if this is the case the North Medico's are not exactly competant.

medial is the indide of the leg. Why ow why would you put the ice at the base of the lateral ligament on the other side of the leg

at least its better than what I was thinking it was. After thinking throw it I was thinking either an ACL or PCL injury.

Massive pity for Rory at this stage of the year but as you say, at least it's not one of the dreaded year-long injuries.

He'll come back to the SANFL and get some good form and hopefully debut later in the year.

From afc.com.au

A group of Crows showed some good form in SANFL trials last weekend.

Ruckman Jonathon Griffin , returning from a knee strain, played well for Central District and had 11 possessions and 16 hit-outs. In the same game, rookie Brodie Martin was impressive for Sturt with 14 kicks and four handballs.

Jason Porplyzia was back for his first game since his shoulder reconstruction, playing three quarters for West Adelaide. He was quiet early in the game but had a powerful third quarter and finished with 15 possessions.

Patrick Dangerfield also played for West and had 24 possessions in a good performance, with his “in close” work a feature. But rookie Chris Schmidt needed stitches in a head wound after playing just 15 minutes.

Down at Noarlunga, North’s Nick Gill had 16 possessions, took 11 marks and kicked two goals as a roaming half-forward. Tony Armstrong also was busy, collecting 19 possessions, and Phil Davis (nine possessions) was solid in defence and led North’s “one-percenters” stat.

Rory Sloane started well with seven early touches before injuring a knee. Shaun McKernan (nine possessions) played a range of roles for South, including a stint as a defender against Gill.

At reserves level, Tom Lee kicked 2.4 for Sturt and took four contested marks while Will Young showed some good signs in collecting 13 possessions for Norwood on Friday.

Gill felt like he got more of the ball. I didnt think tony got that much ball, That would be accurate with Davis. And all 7 of those were probably in the 5 min before he got injured.

Why do you care? Surely you can just read about how the Crow players went on the Monday instead of wasting your time watching a competition which doesn't care about it's history and is nothing but a feeder competition?

Right on brother, keep fighting the good fight.

You are correct.

Wasn't hard to pick, it is usually the bandwagoner supporters that like to run down the SANFL.

i am not running the SANFL down, not at all.

Just because i don’t have the time to go to every home game doesn’t mean i am not as passionate about my SANFL club as you are. And just because i don’t make every second post in reference to that club, doesn’t mean anything either. Last time i looked this was the Crows board, not the SANFL or the Glenelg FC board, but the Big Footy Adelaide Board where people talked about the crows stuff.

i admit i have not been to as many games as i have liked over the last few years as time management has not allowed it but my membership is always paid on time. And when i can, i do go. Call me a bandwagon fan, do i care? Heck no.

All i am saying regarding a crows reserves side; i want to start a season knowing the player we have on the list or are available at the beggining of the season will end the season. i get sick of losing player to the AFL year after year and having to rebuild, even losing good players week in and week out doesn’t allow for team chemistry. That doesn’t help anyone win a premiership – except maybe Centrals and look at how many (or how few) player they have lost to the AFL. Building a good core group of players year after year and keeping those same players consistency around the club does. Losing 3 or 4 good player to the AFL year after year doesn’t help. Yes i want a crow’s reserves side as this will help the Crows youngster develop; it will eliminate the bye as well as allowing the clubs to know who they can rely on at the begging of each season.

RL or anyone can make petty stupid jokes about me disrespecting the SANFL, i don’t care. i know my support for my club and how long it has been going on for – the difference is, you don’t.

Toot Toot - that's what you expect right?

crows98 **** you talk shit mate. One minute you are telling everyone that the SANFL clubs don't even have history anymore because that was sucked away when the VFL went national. Now you are telling us all how much you love your club.

"Petty stupid jokes" haha you are the peas to maccasno1's pod. Or something.
