SC Defenders Discussion Thread

Here are a couple of names I would like people to discuss

Rick Ladson $332,100 (Hawthorn Hawks) Defender/Midfielder
...
Mark Nickoski $198,700 (West Coast Eagles) Defender
Kyle Cheney $163,500 (Hawthorn Hawks) Defender

Just some names I would love to know what people think about these guys?

Ladson barely played last season. Well behind in the pecking order in the back pocket to wing roles in which he thrives. Whitecross, Murphy and Puopolo, among others, are ahead of him for mine. Injuries are also a major concern for Rick. Heck of player that really contributed to our '08 flag through brilliant kicking skills, but I'd doubt he's in our starting 22; potentially even starting squad of 25. Wait for an upgrade if he starts getting games

Nickoski is injured too often and doesn't score huge numbers. Nevertheless, he has the potential to be a serviceable cashcow if he stays fit. Nothing more imo. Better options at his price including Puopolo, Duigan Hibberd, Otten, Toy, Tape, Coad & Heppell

Cheney; no clue. Not sure why hawks traded for him (apart from apparently filling C. Brown's boots). He will be behind Whitecross, Murphy and imo, Puopolo in getting a game as a small backman this season, so maybe wait and see for an upgrade if he can work his way into the team.

Thanks for that, think(/hope) Ladson can recapture the form of '08 where he averaged low 90's for the season.

Cheney is an interesting option, has had a very solid pre season and been named in the HuN best in two of the games, so must be doing something right, whilst Puopolo has not been spoken about since the first game.

Duigan - Have
Hibberd - Have
Otten - Have
Toy - Tossing up/Have
Tape - Tossing up/Have
Coad - Tossing up/Have
Heppell - Have

So not much else available, what are peoples thoughts on Andrew Carrazo then?

Having terrible time of this :( Have settled on the following, for now.

Bruce, Gibbs, Deledio, Grimes, Otten, Heppell, Duigan (Toy, Puopolo, Hibberd)

Bruce is a concern as he could come into a start studded side and just float around 65-75 ppg. Might plan for a Goddard drop so i can get him after 5 or so. Seems as though it could be a waste of a trade further down the line.

8, 9, 10 are pot luck, so i think i might wait.

I wouldn't pick Gwilt but hardly hopeless, especially if Gilbert plays forward, he might get a bit more reign to rebound and he put up a few hundreds last year and only one real shocker.

To overcome your Bruce theory, you could just get Goddard into your backline instead of the mids (where I presume you have him)

Definitely not hopeless but still needs a fair bit of improvement.

Gilbert forward opens up space for Fisher, Gram and Gwilt, however I'm comfortable with Goddard and Roo and my Saints players.

Nah no goddard as of yet.

I've gone for a chocked up midfield of which i never usually do...Round 1-

Swan, Montagna, Boyd, Goodes, Cotchin, Polec (Swallow, Harris, Liberatore)

Maybe downgrade Cotchin (Risky but looks breakout), and then remove Bruce for Goddard but Bruce + Cotchin, id hope would pull 190 per round as opposed to Goddard and a kid who might only do it once a month.

Goddard averages 130

Harris will average at least 70

Cotchin is a gun, not sure if he is a good pick though. You would definitely want to limit other risks if you have him in your midfield.

The issue with Carazzo is that although he is well capable of averaging 100+, Ratten uses him for more defensive roles, so he isn't allowed to run free as much.

I've been looking at Easton Wood. 255k might be a bit of a risk though. Thoughts?

I shuffled Heppell into the backline to get Irons in the midfield. Do you think this is a mistake considering I now have no interchange between the back and midfield.

I already have 5 super mids I don't want to change them.

Had Wood in my team for a month now but starting to cool on him, for no other reason than team balance. From all reports he is expected to play a major role this year and could get high scores playing off HB.

I'm not convinced Hibberd will play. Hope he does, but I reckon they might give that spot to Myers or Hardingham, even with injuries to Slattery and Welsh.

Yeah, I tend to agree buddy

Would love to see 'Hibbo' get a gig in round 1, but think he may be right on the fringes.

Here's hoping he could be a good downgrade target come round 10 or 11.

Does it really matter? Everybody will change most of their rookie selections when the rd 1 teams are released anyway.

Re: Hidden Gems - Backs

Now I haven't read the enitre thread, and this being my 1st year in SC, what do people think of Leigh Brown? And if I have made a bad descision, who around his price range should I trade into my team?

Hi guys just afew thoughts on my back 10 would be appreciated.

Goddard, Gibbs, Deledio, Grimes, Bock, Otten, Heppell EMG: Toy, Duigan, Puopolo.

The 2 players i have reservations about but at the same time i'm pretty confident with are Bock and Grimes. These 2 blokes will define the success f my backline because i think the other 8 seem to be in 80% of sides. Wht are peoples thoughts and are these smart culculated picks with the doubts on certain premium backs ??

Any love for Heath Grundy? Played all 22 games last year and averaged 89 points. Surely he has potential to improve on this. Also is a MPP.

Would probably avoid. Went 8 weeks without cracking the tonne last year and with LRT struggling for fitness and C.Bolton out for who knows how long, he'll be our number 1 defender. Just can't see him improving on the 89, would love to be proved wrong though.
