I don't think it'll degenerate to that level but unless we take drastic measures it will.

People need to face up to that. The footy is just a minor issue in the scheme of things.

I think there is a massive problem coming in the US that could shake the world . Trump is gradually being dragged kicking and screaming into doing something.
I mean worst economic crash in real terms, not relative (the global economy now is much larger than at previous points in history). A lot will depend on how accurate predictions of 40-60% or similar of the global population getting the virus turn out to be.

That is an extrelmely narrow minded view!

Thank you for your feedback Dlions, but I disagree. I believe it's a well thought out and reasonable position. This will impact so many across the community that to prioritize the sustainability of any sport is madness. People working for small businesses across many sectors are going to struggle to keep a roof over their heads, struggle to keep power & gas connected, this is where we need to prioritize financial assistance.

I wasn’t referring to this part of your post.

A stat quoted was (approximately) 34% of America’s medical staff have school aged children and that makes shutting schools a difficult proposition.

Pfffttt, baloney. Am I the only one here that once old enough to attend primary school was left to fend for themselves on school holidays? What is it today that makes parents think they can't abandon their children at home from 9 till 5. I turned out ok (ish).

On a serious note. Yes, this complicates the issue. It's not just ICU beds required, it's staffed ICU wards.

If we hit the highs they fear Icu nurses will be running teams of non icu nurses in makeshift icu beds. That’s a horrible position to be in - there will be mistakes and people will die and the icu nurse will wear that guilt.

Is there anyone around who actually wants a season as compromised as, 4 day breaks, compromised rules that could change week on week, lists up to 15 plus extra players, and so on? Maybe it;s confirmation bias but nearly every comment I've seen has been "just put it off for a month".

Man they could wrestle naked in a mud pit for all I care. So long as there are premiership points and a chance to lift the trophy for the Lions I will watch it.

I can’t see how clubs are supposed to try and save up to $5million when they may have to pay up to an extra 15 players?

Unsurprisingly, the morons that run the NRL are pushing on with round 2 next week. I’m genuinely amazed at how ignorant their CEO is that the show must go on.

The sooner these clowns that run our country lock it down, the better because decisions such as those being made the NRL,Vice-Chancellor’s at Universities etc are just going to push on causing all sorts of irreparable damage and deaths.

I just honestly cannot believe that educated people in seriously high leadership positions are making such irrational decisions to such huge detriment that is plain as day.

Do they really think sports leagues have any chance of getting a bailout? If the NRL gets one, so does everyone else. No chance.
AFLPA having meetings all day tomorrow, culminating in a teleconference hookup with all 1240 AFL and AFLW members.

Wonder if the players call the season off.
I really hope they do. There's just too much risk involved and 0 chance of preventing players from getting infected, and they have families too. It's also staff, officials, media, medical personnel.

Look at what's being done in European countries similar to us in not being proactive: France has banned all unnecessary long distance travel, Austria's banned all gatherings of over five people. That's where we're headed. I'm surprised anyone agreed to play in the AFLW this round, **** that.

Players would be well aware that calling the season off will cost them a lot of money

Calls to cancel the whole season are an overreaction and premature IMO, as I said earlier we have 4-6 weeks to play with before even having to scale back the number of games played.

I'm also all for having a shorter season if need be, play 16-18 rounds with no byes and if needed a couple of mid week rounds, the fixture draw is compromised every season so no difference to my way of thinking. We could delay the start of the season for a couple of months and still have a decent season, if by around mid May it still looks like the season wouldn't be starting anytime soon then would be the time to abandon the season.

Garry Lyon

“Not only are we asking the players to do everything we’re asking the general members of society not to do, we’re now going to tell them to do it five times in three weeks,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“The question I will continue to ask – why are we playing Thursday? I can tell you why not based on everything I’ve read and learned. I’m just trying to work out why. What’s the rush?

“Back page of the Herald Sun, the AFL thinks they can play on despite a player getting tested positive. Why are they the exception to the world?

“Do you know how strange that sounds? The world is going into isolation and the AFL reckons they can push on.”

Foxfooty.com.au has spoken to multiple players who said there is a general sense of unease about playing at a time when much of the world is gripped by a virus with no immediate cure.

Hard to blame them...
