Wrestling is an incredibly physically intense performance art, and all the damage builds up over time. A lot of the old guard developed painkiller addictions and alcohol problems as a result of the heavy touring schedules taking a toll on recovery periods.

WWE in particular have a level of culpability in this. Vince McMahon is/was incredibly stingy with providing anything resembling a health insurance plan, which is pretty much vital to any athlete who has to deal with the American health system.
