A champions league type preseason comp? I love that idea & would draw big crowds....but sadly clubs (probably Chelt excluded) would treat it with the same interest as interleague. But a 4 week comp (3 week round robin & 1 final) could look like

Hoppers Crossing v

AFL Vic put up $5000 prize money
Apologies Old Scotch there's a restricted salary cap required ;):)

Anyway that's enough of fantasy land
Would be a couple of O&M clubs as probably at Albury

A while back James Boag tried this, sponsored a preseason competition for all the leagues around VIC.

We (St Pauls) were invited as reigning premiers and got grouped up with Scoresby (Vermont didn't take part), Shepp United and Bell Park.

We didn't win a game.

Applied ourselves well against Scoresby but got beaten convincingly by the other two.

Cranbourne was there from memory. Shepparton took it out from memory.

In saying this, we also didn't field our full side as it was pre-season and i'm sure other teams potentially in the same boat. There was a cash prize at the end of it all.

Betstar Cup. They did it around 10-15 years ago. Unfortunately some clubs pulled out and being preseason it was pretty hard for anybody to take it too seriously.

Also they were playing mini matches to try to have all clubs face off against each other, clubs preferred a proper full-length practice match.

Don’t think it had a second season.

INTRODUCTION

In March 1992 the VSFL (Victoria's newly-formed governing football body) held the inaugural Premier's Cup
which featured the reigning premiership-winning teams from the leading metropolitan and regional leagues
across Victoria.

The strongest leagues (the VFA and the VAFA) were allowed to field two teams while the other leagues only had
a single team involved. The winning club collected $33,000 prizemoney provided by the Victorian State
Government and the best player in the final received the Jack Dyer Medal.

VFA club Werribee won the inaugural series and Werribee's Darren Morgan claimed the Jack Dyer Medal.

The Premier's Cup competition had been planned as an annual event but the 1992 tournament was the only
series ever held.

MATCH RESULTS

Dandenong, the reigning-VFA premiers, battled through their opening match against Traralgon, then scraped home by 4 points against the VAFA's premier team, De La Salle.

Werribee had a much easier run through the early rounds, defeating South Bendigo by 68 points then crushing Bell Park by 97 points

The semi final was a re-match of the 1991 VFA Grand Final which Dandenong had won by 9 points. This time Werribee were never troubled as they gained revenge for that loss, defeating Dandenong by 80 points.

The final was played at the MCG on March 28 as a curtain-raiser for the AFL's Round 2 Melbourne vs Geelong match. North Ballarat were led by ex-Carlton premiership player, Jim Buckley and Werribee were coached by former Fitzroy rover, Leon Harris. Werribee cruised to the title, scoring 13 goals in the final quarter to record a 114 point victory.
