Kardinia Park Instagram page has a photo of the cricket pitch being installed for the Australia v Sri Lanka 20/20 (Men) and Australia v New Zealand (Women) on Feb 19.

Checking the Ticketek site reveals only 29 of the available 64 seating bays have seats available- a very good sign with more than 6 weeks to go!

We brought tickets a month or so ago.... plenty of bays with minimal seating left.
Should be a very good crowd

Bit unusual to have the pitch almost in line with a lighting tower isn't it? Thought it might impact on the batter's vision

And if the extra 10,000 bought food and other merchandise at the ground, the benefits would be even better than the $700K.
As I said a couple of times, I was talking about the benifit to the town.
I would of thought most of that money would go to the club and KP trust.

They need it like that so that the boundaries square of the wicket are legal. It is a bit unusual, although the MCG also does it because it has 6 towers.

A pic I took at the A-League game on Monday night-

I cannot believe how quickly this stand is going up. Just brilliant.

Thanks to those posting pics.

Now we just have to remove that God ugly Ford stand.

I was not living in Geelong at the time that they built the Ford Stand.
I thought that it was a waste of a good opportunity to build a good stand when I came back to Geelong .
But I suppose that they were severely restricted by finances and there was pressure applied by the AFL to upgrade the place. Although they hung onto the old wooden stand that had the Admin built on the back and was replaced by the premiership stand for a while.

Wonder if the NRL would consider expanding here. Wouldn't be too different to the AFL expanding to Western Sydney.

If so the A-League and NRL governing bodies could pitch in for a small stadium here with a rectangular field and 15,000-20,000 seats. NRL there in winter and A-League in summer, while Kardinia Park gets AFL in winter and Big Bash in summer.

Just a thought.

I don't think the NRL are ambitious enough to try that, and I don't feel sorry about it. Bad enough that living in Canberra means hearing about the Raiders but also knowing how little the league itself cares about them.

Yeah, I don't see it happening any time soon. First step might be to have a Storm game here (*shudders*) like the Victory do.

Can't help but think the NRL will want to stay on par and expand to 18 teams soon, somehow we would need to place ourselves in front of Adelaide, Perth and any other potential locations to get in first.

Adelaide is probably never going to happen, it's an even more hostile market for them than QLD is for AFL. Surely the more likely option would be to start doubling up - 2nd Melbourne and Brisbane teams. Suits the conservative mindset of the NRL too.

'Greater Western Melbourne Giants' perhaps? :p

I couldn't see it happening

I don't even think the NRL really want the Melbourne team in the comp as it is

An NRL team here would crash and burn, no way there's the support. You could argue per capita it's similar to expanding into GWS but there's a much bigger population there than what we have here.

Big Bash definitely has the support, the A-League probably does but an NRL team would have no chance. A western Melbourne team that plays 3-4 matches a season down here I could see happening.

I don't think the NRL would be as stupid as the AFL in trying to establish a team in an area where the majority of the population don't GAF about their code of football.

Yes, the Storm's establishment was predicated on an across-Melbourne core support base of expats from UK/NSW/Qld. That has all been soaked up now, you would think.

They actually have the 3rd highest home attendance (about 18,000 LOL).
But I think with League it's been all about TV ratings for quite a while a bit like the way our game will probably go.
It's funny in a way Parra and the Broncos are actually bigger clubs than Collingwood.

The old Kardinia Park has changed a fair bit since Sir Brian came to town. Although I think that the city end with the Ford Stand and standing room stand needs to be included to reflect the Pre Cook and the current K'Park contrast.
Compare the image below with the one at #1481.

And Kiwis, Samoans etc. Prob their biggest supporter base.
But yeah absolutely zero chance of another League team down here.

I was driving down Latrobe terrace the other day and it is really coming along, looks huge from the road.

Very excited about it being finished
