Another problem with aligning any a league or big bash teams with GFC is that you would potentially be losing a few thousand supporters for either of these teams. The thing to remember in a potential partnership (which I think is unlikely, but doable) is that not everyone in Geelong supports Geelong the football club. So if a local team in another sport were called the Geelong Cats, would you not be marginalizing those who support other AFL teams but live in Geelong? I can't speak for others, but I think that i would struggle to support a team carrying the name of an opposition team in a different sport if you get what I mean.

Not everyone follows GFC in football but those same people may well support Geelong in another sport. .. You are theorising about the Geelong Sporting club type approach that Collingwood is heading down.

My club Melbourne Heart were bought by Manchester City but I still follow Liverpool. I wouldn't see that as an issue.

I'm going against the crowd and agreeing with you on this. Those in Geelong who don't support the cats generally HATE us, it would definitely make some reluctant to cross over.

Keeping it separate won't stop any Geelong fans jumping on or any other fans jumping on, win-win. Doesn't mean the two codes couldn't offer some kind of joint membership though (same seat year round type of deal).

Good point. Might be the best way to approach it... a Geelong team rather than a Geelong Cats team.

And as a side note, I've always been disappointed that so many Geelong people who don't, for whatever reasons, support the Cats end up being passionately anti. I've also been disappointed that the club hasn't seen this as an enticing marketing challenge... how can we manage to get them a little more on-side (and perhaps even making a financial contribution as well!)
I'd love to see something like a "second best friend" membership offered to Geelong based supporters of the other clubs- you get admission and seat to your nominated club's matches when you play Geelong (home and/or away) plus a bonus couple of matches here at the Cattery and another couple of you team's Melbourne matches. 5 or 6 matches a season watching your favourite team and you new second-favourite team!

Geelong has more members then room for them, why would the give seats away to opposition fans.

The A-League commences in October and finishes in May. If Geelong were to have a side based at Kardinia Park there would be cross over with the regular AFL season. If the Cats are in line for a team in the expanded AFL women's league in the coming years they'd want them to play at Kardinia Park. Women's League commences early February and finishes by the time the regular season starts. Big Bash commences late December and finishes late January.

Having all four would be great but in my opinion we're a better chance scheduling wise to get a Big Bash franchise than anything else. I also think it'd would be easier to get sponsorship and 20k plus crowds to 5-6 BBL games than it would be to 15 A-League games. I don't think that kind of money is around town and I would hate to see a failed franchise for any sport in Geelong.

I think the anti Geelong bandwagon in town is for a few reasons
1: There's so many of us per capita in Geelong
2: Our bandwagon, not know much supporters are generally louder than the passionate supporters (I think we're quite a modest group actually, humbled by a lot of painful years)
3: The Geelong Advertiser, who appeal to that bandwagon know little group

Back on topic - A BBL franchise is definitely the most logical use of the stadium with a womens team, but no reason why the A-league couldn't schedule around our AFL sides. I just think a BBL team makes sense with the potential to host international cricket too

For the sake of the arguing for a new stand, then any new activity would need to have an argument for utilising that stand. Women's football certainly wont, soccer is questionable - and only for matches against victory/heart. BBL potentially, but again questionable.

Unless...

The new stand has elite training facilities for soccer/cricket. More than the other stands, this last last stand has to justify itself as a facility with functions beyond just staring at some grass.

Cricket facilities would make the most sense, as the Geelong Cricket Club use the oval behind the Ablett Terrace anyway.

Plans for the stage-five grandstand include a “heavy concentration” of cricket facilities, regional administration offices, a cricket training academy and planned office spaces to cater for a Twenty20 team in the national Big Bash League.

Because members=dollars. Also, we want our 36500 capacity stadium to be as full as possible each match, especially if we want it to be a 38000 to 42000 capacity stadium after Stage 5.

Don't hate those who live in Geelong but don't barrack for the side. I grew up in an opposite club heartland supporting the Cats! Everyone has their reasons, mine is family history. I wouldn't barrack for a Geelong Big Bash team but certainly hope they get one.

I was in my dad's office today, and on his desk i saw an 'Our Ambition' booklet (they're still trying to get money off anyone they can). I opened it up and found a whole lot of new (or at least new to me) artists impressions that i thought i would share... Of most interest to me was the first one, which was a full floor plan of the lower floor in the new stand and how it joins to the premiership stand. I don't have access to a scanner but i took some photos of the pages, see the link below:

(they were all over the 1MB limit to post on here, and i couldn't be bothered to downsize them)

BBL would be my first choice.

Soccer just leaves me cold.

Same.

Can't think of another game where 'men' run around for 100 mins with no result and regularly go down like their leg has been shot off with a WW2 howitzer....boredom I guess.

In the meantime, the crowd is bored no end and turn to educational alternatives like lighting flares, rioting and chanting crap in the streets......

For what it is worth - i think it has been a disgraceful waste of taxpayers money to this date - i read they want another 80 million to finish it - unbelievable - they seem to be knocking one stand down - and then building another one
A 30000 seating capacity is ample - because the Cats are allways going to play the likes of Hawthorn and Collingwood at the MCG - where both sets of supporters can be comfortably seated

Wait till you need the public health system to help you - and you will understand what a waste this never ending KP redevelopment is

Just briefly- early in the year- in another state - needed an MRI Scan - went in as in patient on the Wednesday - got a booking appointment for Friday afternoon for the scan - because of emergency situations ( understandable ) my time got cancelled - the nurse said to me because of a lack of funding Public Hospitals are " RUBBISH " when it comes to weekends and Public Holidays ( i think the Monday was Anzac Day ) meaning that the MRI scan was shut on the Weekend and the Public Holiday - so had to wait to Tuesday as an in patient to get my MRI scan

Geelong have had a very good go from the public purse - and should not get one more cent - there are much more important things taxpayers money should be spent on than a precious football ground

It is rubbish. I spent over 10 hours in the emergency waiting room at Sunshine earlier this year and was shocked when I got told the maximum amount of staff were there for the funding available.
Agree KP redevelopment really seems like overkill and also totally agree 30,000 is ample considering we don't want to play the big clubs there anyway.
The government should of at least made sure that all 11 GFC home games should be played there to at least get some sort of value for money.
That kind of cash for 8 AFL games a year plus maybe some BBL games in the future is ridiculous.
On top of all that there's still going to be no real General Admission seating LOL so someone on a average wage can't even take their kids to the footy there without leaving themselves short for the rest of the week.
Anyway rant over. At least it's good for the club I guess.
