Actually, back in the 12 teams VFL days we did, indeed, have 11 home games- one against every other team. That included Collingwood, Essendon, Carlton, Richmond- all the then "Powerful" clubs.
But you are 100% right- we need other users to fill the ground as often as possible.

I don't think that's correct.

I stand corrected! Thanks for that, I'd forgotten that prior to 1970 we only had 20 rounds for the season and 18 prior to 1968. We did play half of them at home, however- often getting 35000ish for Collingwood games.
One or two teams escaped the trip down the highway each season... they must have celebrated when the draw came out.
1970 was the introduction of Waverly Park and the horrible beginning of surrendering a home game began... and it still goes on...

From memory (about 99% sure) Cookie came out the day the fixture was released and said he was surprised/annoyed the first home game was scheduled for so early and it would be a tight deadline.

So not sure where this talk of "It's our fault" is coming from.

Or did I dream that?

We are Geelong and we need you!

We are about to open the region’s largest function and events spaces. In order to be ready for our first home match, we are seeking volunteers to help with the following:

- Unpacking deliveries (furniture including tables and chairs; kitchenware including plates, bowls, cutlery)

- Cleaning and polishing (kitchenware including plates, bowls, cutlery)

If you are available between 9am and 5pm on Monday 1 May and Friday 5 May, please send an email to hr@geelongcats.com.au and we will provide details as to how you can help.

Thank you and Go Cats!

Jeez they must be in a lot of trouble if they're needing volunteers!

Really??? They can't use a labour hire agency for a couple of days and pay people fairly?
Or if they actually cared about the community they could use CRS or Gateways or something.
The clubs isn't on its knees. It's about to be debt free because of donations and is getting a brand new stand because of tax payers money.
I think it's about time they should give something back.
I know most will disagree but it's a bit rich for me.

Don't mean to intrude, very interested in the development, just think that this is a bit like the F1s in Melbourne using volunteers to set up the event. I remember a news article highlighting the issues here, what is volunteering and what isn't. Bit of a grey area for mine

But the Jihad games take about 35k to break even if i recall from previous seasons - and at KP the same home game @35k puts a million in the kitty.

I dont see how the game at Etihad makes sense financially but happy to be corrected.

Go Catters

Overall picture- penalties from the builder for not having the stadium ready, game moved to Etihad with possibly larger crowd = financial windfall. Hence my comment with regards to the bean counters having plenty to say on the decision.

We make more from game at KP.

I know of quite a few that would be happy to stick their hand up, if there are people that are happy to do it for free, why wouldn't the club ask? If I lived closer I probably would help out for a couple of hours.
Why wouldn't the club ask?
Well I know I've never asked or even wanted anyone to work for me for free, not even mates.
Do they ask players to work for free.
Do they give people their money back after they've lost it on the clubs pokies?
Are they going to make seats any cheaper for people after they've got over 80% of their stadium for free.
Each to their own but I reckon you'd have to have rocks in your head.

I think the point he is trying to make is that the daily penalty would make up for it financially... If they rush the build, possibly have problems and get a 35K crowd at simonds, they make a million, and have ongoing problems that need to be fixed. If they move the game, don't rush the build and get a 40K crowd at etihad, they get a small amount from the game itself + the $500K* daily penalty for however long it goes over... If they finish it 2-3 days overtime, they've already done better from a purely financial standpoint than they would have if it were in Geelong.
And if it stays 8 days behind as was suggested, they would be 3 mil in front.

Having said all of that, i really hope it doesn't come down to this, but i do take samtheman1979 's point.

Just because you wouldn't help does not mean it is a bad idea. As I said I know some already putting their hands up to help.

Ever been a part of a sporting club, as in local sporting clubs, anyone who has would more than likely volunteer, it's and entrenched cultural aspect of local clubs so just because the cats are professional wouldn't deter people. It's no big deal really. An hour of your time isn't that much. Now if the club had some class and I do hope they do then they'd offer/give cats shop vouchers to those that volunteered to help, a certain time though of course, not just 5mins then here's $50 to spend.

As for pokies, we're aiming to get rid of them by 2020 so soon to be a moot point.
Dude, nearly every stadium in this country used for any professional sport is taxpayer funded, hence free for the club. not sure why we cop so much shit for ours being funded by the same sources as everyone else.

I reckon it's a brilliant idea.
There's nothing like making community feel a part of the club. Probably the only thing they've done wrong is not give fair notice. If they'd put that out 2 months ago I reckon 1000 people would have signed up.

If I lived in Geelong I'd be good for 20 hours.

From Thursday's Addy...

Final stand to get $3.9m
THE final chapter of Simonds Stadium’s redevelopment is expected to get the green light in next week’s State Budget, with the Government pledging $3.9 million to kickstart planning and design work.

Awesome news!

Apparently lots of meetings at Kardinia Park yesterday, all levels of Government & other key stake holders. I hope they're not buttering us up but an announcement like this, it does smell a little like spin to me. I hope I'm just being pessimistic!

I know and if you read my posts I'm not arguing that.

If the penalty is $500,000 per day that they are over and it is over by 8 days that's $4m! Four times as much as they make per game at Kardinia Park on top of any profit they would make by moving the game to Etihad.
I'm sure other needs are more important than making a few extra bob and having a game moved to a new venue.

They'll do everything in their power to ensure the game remains at KP and I'm sure it will.

I'll be furious if it doesn't.

It's a long, long time since I read my Brooking on Building Contracts, but it won't be as simple as that.
There will be very detailed contractual and referenced provisions as to whether and when any liquidated damages kick in, as to what are allowable delays, and as to how the amount of liquidated damages are calculated so that they reflect actual damages, and are not just an unenforceable penalty.
And even then, if the club would actually "profit" from any delay, the builder would dispute the amount, claiming it is a penalty, rather than actual damage.
This is, of course, just speculation, without knowing the contract details, but based on normal practice in this type of contract.
And whether or not the club actually receives the benefit of any liquidated damages for delay may depend upon who the actual contract parties are, and upon who is making the contract payments.
