Quite often when people are arguing different view points, the truth is somewhere in the middle. It's true that Chessers knees and achilles haven't exploded 9 times. However, drafting somebody that hasn't played for 2 years and relying almost entirely on their under-age form was incredibly risky. We showed an over reliance on under-age form when drafting Brander too and you shouldn't make the same mistake twice.

I have high hopes that Chesser will make it, but we can still question the methodology and thought process behind our drafting decisions. A couple of WA boys in Johnson and Van Rooyen with more exposed form were still available when we opted for Chesser.

Dark sharks.

Chesser is 20.

We didn't take a WAFL player called Priddis for 6yrs and intially passed on another guy called Kelly for 5 yrs before selling the friggin farm (costing us 5 kids in 2 drafts who would likely have 30 games into them by now).

Another guy called Judd was considered a lemon due to dodgy shoulders, resulting in us actually being able to draft him.

Shuey played 6 games in his first 2 yrs, because,...dodgy hammys. I remember all the talk then about us drafting a lemon too.

It's a lottery.

They're kids. Some go bang immediately, some take 4-5yrs.

Rather than criticise a 20yo who's only got upside, why aren't we talking about a bunch of 30+ veterans whos bodies aren't up to it, yet apparently have ink drying on 2 yr contract extensions.

Now to be fair to DS, he did make the point that if you’re signing up players in their thirties, especially ones with an injury history, then it’s a risk that you can’t complain about if it blows up in your face

So he did raise those players as being an issue

We drafted Chesser with very little exposed form which was a risk and I’m not arguing that point

It was the suggestion that you can’t point to Chesser’s injury as being unlucky because you drafted an injury prone player which I disagreed with - a solitary knee injury predraft is not an indicator that someone’s injury prone

A serious ankle injury followed by another knee injury since he’s arrived might be a pattern or it might just be unlucky. At the moment, I’m arguing it’s the latter given the contact that caused his knee injury was unlucky

And yet I clearly rate Ginbey, Hewett and Long and talk them up quite frequently. Barnett pick was potentially my favourite one of the lot.

So that really throws a spanner in this meme.

Getting a little snippy here sunshine. Enough to even delete your post and redo it last night.

Take a breath, have a protein shake and take a joke.

Its a flipping joke we are offering anything more than 1 year to anyone over 30.

Barnett debut or just go with pinch hitters like Collingwood are doing?
I reckon we can get away with pinch hitters. Williams was close to worst on ground in the two opening games (and got destroyed in the ruck in the Derby despite having a better game) and we still managed to fare pretty well in clearances and contested ball.

Darling F50 and Waterman following Grundy around is probably the best we have. Maybe Barrass taking D50 stoppages as well

Disagree with you there. Sure Darcy got the statistics with hit outs but Williams did enough to stop them being to advantage. That is why we won the contested ball.

Yeah no doubt he played better but he still allowed that many hitouts. If the pass mark is competing well enough to not allow HTA then I think Waterman also did that well and is why I think we shouldn’t be blooding Barnett.

It’ll be a downgrade for sure but the thing we have to weigh up is whether Barnett’s inclusion is going to influence the ruck enough over Waterman and Darling to justify sacrificing the extra runner

I would not risk Barnett in the ruck this week. I would hope that the club has learnt the lesson with Oscar in playing the talls in the ruck too soon. It screws their body about if they do not have the core strength to ruck. I think Barnett will be a wonderful prospect but we need to let him develop.

If you want a left field option, then it is Rotham. He has the spring and the running capacity to compete with Grundy at all but the boundary throw ins. Like last week, we rove to a losing ruck. Hell, clubs have been doing that to us with NicNat and we are now needing to do the same.

He broke his arm, what, a month ago? Not sure bringing him in to ruck against Grundy at this stage is a good idea either...

I think it was Josh Kennedy I heard talking about Rothams broken arm, might have been Schofield. Either way it was someone who has a clue

Said that he would have had a steel plate late inserted which would strengthen the arm immediately and the wait before playing would be dependent on the wound healing externally so there was no risk of infection

So there shouldn’t be any concerns about his arm when rucking against Grundy. Plenty of other reasons, but not his arm
