Injury SJOGHCIU - Offseason Edition

I'm holding onto hope that we flogged the boys during the off-season, knowing that they would break down, but that it would be worth it to turn around our fitness long term - happy in the knowledge that we would be anchored to the bottom of the ladder in an insignificant year for the club.

There's more than one way to tank....

I know the club deservedly cops criticism on its injury reporting but it should be acknowledged that they fessed up on Shuey’s hamstring tightness when that tidbit could easily have been withheld.

It’ll heal before his ankle does so it’s not what will be keeping out of the side and nobody would be any the wiser (Assumes that his hamstring can actually heal, I have my doubts)

Mitchell Woodcock - Getting paid to rearrange an article put out by the club and putting his name on the top of it as if he’s actually done the leg work to put the story together.

That’s all he does most of the time

Only journo to bring his own chair to watch training

The Ryan Daniels article that appeared last weekend suggested that the new head of S & C put in a brutal pre season program to address the our lack of fitness from the previous year or two and to also see who would "break". I think this latter point was particularly directed at our fragile but very well remunerated veterans. Put the hammer down and see which of them (if any) are still capable of meeting the fitness standard expected of an AFL footballer.

Now we’ve sorted out the reporting side of the issue, we can look at the management side.

How was Shuey allowed to go back on with ankle/hamstring issues that will keep him out for a month? Should he have been played in the first place?

Has Yeo suffered a recurrence of the same groin issues that have plagued him for the last few years? If so, was he rushed back into the side too quickly?

How did Long and Hough suffer relatively serious hamstring injuries at training? Are we continuing to overload players during the week even though they’re breaking down left, right and centre?

How much damage did we do to Chesser by sending him back on for the entire second half of the derby? Was it a 6-8 week injury before that, or has it been exacerbated?

Has Cole suffered a recurrence of the ankle injury that kept him out all of last year? If so, was he put under too much load in the first month of the season?

So many questions with so few answers I’m sorry to say

We sent Flyin' Hobblin' back on in the derby too. I mean yeah we were 500 players down at that point, but still.

I can't really offer a sensible answer but when things are this bad it's tempting to reach for the tinfoil and start speculating.

I would've loved to have been a fly on the wall regarding discussions on some these players. Is it possible pressure was being applied in the name of commercial interests? Eg. "The fanbase is getting demoralised, crowds of down, even our usual media lapdogs are starting to ask questions. Is there a possibility we can bring back (insert star player) this week?"

Consider this though. If we didn't send Chesser and Ryan back out in the second half of the derby, we would've been playing a man down for a quarter and a half.

That would've forced all the other players to work even harder to keep up with Freo and push their bodies to the limit even more. Potentially this would have caused other injuries to arise purely through overworking the players.

We've seen the recent spike in hamstring injuries, which I think at least partly has to do with the fact that other players have had to do more work to compensate the loss of already injured players.

Not making excuses for the club - sending Ryan back out (who now faces 2-3 months on the sidelines) with a torn hamstring tendon in hindsight seems a very strange call - but it would have been a tough call to make.

Who knows if more injuries would've cropped up if we put them both on ice (and whether those two would've missed less time).

Shuey only reported hamstring tightness after he cooled down, no complaint during the game.

Yeo - NFI

Long/Hough - Reported in today's report that it was hamstring 'awareness', decided to take no risks with 1st/second year players

Chesser - Actually better than expected outcome. Managing him moreso, as he's only a second year player

Cole - Simmo said after the injury that it wasn't the same injury, otherwise his career would be 'over'.

Its a very sad demise for shuey, reminiscent of nathan buckleys last few years.

I cant see how shuey gets another contract for next year. If he does, you seriously got to wonder about this club.
He’s a “legacy player” mate, he gets to determine when and how he retires according to Simmo.

For mine, this is surely his last year. Body just isn’t up for the rigours of AFL football anymore.

6 players back in the next 3 weeks. what a luxury!
Want to take a bet that
1. A number amongst the supposed 6 coming back get extended or stuck on the perma 3-4 weeks bus, and/or
2. We get replacement injuries for most if not all of the 6. I.e. something like Chesser comes back, offset by Darling getting a back injury.

About the only good news today is the club finally putting numbers to the TBC's.

And finally...

Dear Luke. Love you but I think your body's trying to tell you something.

This is from my post on the R6 Positives and Negatives thread.

Shuey's injury was unlucky. If it were a hammy then I would've agreed with posters on the gameday thread that he's cooked and should retire like Glass in his final year. He should be fine even though he may miss a few weeks again. If he gets another hammy then it has to be all over for him. If it's actually a hammy and not an ankle then get ready for @The wily weagle epic meltdown, I can't wait to see.
• Luke Shuey Ankle/Hamstring 4-5 weeks (New)*

Get ready for the The wily weagle epic meltdown now that Shuey has done a hammy and they let him back out thinking "Nothing to see here."

Shuey probably still optimistic...

Long and Hough are expected to miss 3/4 and 2/3 weeks respectively. That seems more than just “taking no risks” for “awareness”.
