Butler went AA squad like 2 years ago and Hanners couldn’t get on the park. Bit rough on them.

Butler’s 2020 season was very good but he has returned to his level. Feel sorry for Hannebery as we have a few like him at Carlton but average is being kind based on output.

Every club cycles through these types.

Zain Cordy
Liam Stocker
Dan Butler
Dean Kent
Jarrod Lienert
Tom Campbell
Mason Wood
Dan Hannebery
James Frawley
Shaun McKernan
Zain Cordy - defensive backup
Liam Stocker - gone early on stocker
Dan Butler - was great 2020 but yeah
Dean Kent - 2018 - falls outside of the 4 years part, but was average
Jarrod Lienert - was pretty decent last year, but played so he can't have been that bad
Tom Campbell - purely backup checks notes 2 games in 2022 when we had both ruckmen down with injuries
Mason Wood - 19 games in 2022 best ever year 13 goals as a wing, High HF, was well above average last year
Dan Hannebery - heck me, poor bloke couldn't get on the park but when he did was well above average
James Frawley - defensive backup played more than we wanted due to injuries
Shaun McKernan - again ruck backup just like Tom Campbell

4 of those are cover for 2 positions that are notoriously hard to cover

If there’s any fans suffering from battle fatigue it’s gotta be saints fans.
They’ve earnt the right to erect the safety net i reckon …

I well remember an emotional, yet amazingly rational, monologue that Finey delivered on SEN one night. It was from memory just after the Ross Mk1 era which was probably Scotty Watters' year? The year Saints fans lost hope again.

It went for about 20 minutes and was oddly riveting. The crux of it was that he was relieved. That it was exhausting going thru a full season/seasons riding actual hope. And that it was so much easier withdrawing back into what was easier.

A lot of younger Blues Fans are (hopefully) gonna ride that Realistic Hope Train for the first time this year, and will be exhausted after it.

It was an amazing piece of radio, and an amazing look into the soul of a true Sainter. Relieved to be back in no mans land.

They’re all incredibly average mature aged recruits.

Justify them how you’d like. As I said above most clubs would have a similar list. Maybe not the Cats.

interesting post,'for the first time this year' ? i dont mind reminding Carlton supporters that this 'realistic hope train'that u so mildly mention has been chugging along and gathering momentum for 3 years and was at its zenith thruout the whole of last season, remember ? HELLO,your team set a record, have u forgotton ? 21 weeks in succession in the top 8 and the only team ever, EVER, to drop out after the last game,i dont think you can top the hope meter after what transpired last season given everyone and i mean every carlton supporter from timbuktu to amsterdam was talking top 4 after rd 13,id disagree that Carlton supporters are hopefull this season id say theyre in recovery mode from therapy more so than anything else

Jumping back on the hope train lol.

You didn't have any hope when you were up by four goals against Collingwood in the last round?

Blues fans are genuinely hilarious. Why exactly would you be any more chance this year than last year? If we are in no man's land then you're in the same spot surely.

With all due respect this post is some rambling nonsense.

You onced heard a saints supporter explain why he preferred to believe we were properly shite cause it hurt less when we lose so now that’s what we all must be?

I remember speaking to a saints fan at a pub in Sydney who could explain in detail why we were the best team every season but some luck or poor umpiring went against us and no I’m not joking, this blokes spiel was as compelling as it was ridiculous.

I can openly say as a long pessimistic saints fan I’ve had periods of time where I checked out of watching or caring about the footy, especially in the last 10-11 years where we’ve been utterly irrelevant and varying shades of terrible but you never really give up.

Anyone thinking that a saints fan is waving the white flag or checking out this season because we’re aware of the fact we almost certainly won’t win the flag is an idiot. In my time on big footy and in general I’ve never seen saints fans so up and about. We’re not gonna win the flag this season but for the first time in a while it feels like we’re genuinely building something. Gamestyle begets list begets wins begets momentum begets success. We’re at step 1 with a real belief it will progress.

The average footy fan is more informed now than ever before, your regular punter in the 90s watching Eddie with his original teeth on a Thursday night didn’t know about gamestyle and list management but they do now, that’s why there’s realism but realism doesn’t mean surrender it just means we know we’re early on in the journey to success but we’re at least on that journey.

Having said all that not EVERY fan will feel that way, just as some Carlton fans will believe the flag is yours for the taking and some will be positive you’ll win the spoon. Don’t suggest that every saints fan is one thing or the other cause it’s just dumb.

Anyway, that’s my rant, memorable or not.

Raising the white flag before the season starts is pretty pathetic. Talking like a bottom 4 side. They aren't North levels of bad. Even North fans are more up and about. Always a team or two that surprises every season. Why not the Saints?
A huge part of the reason for us not being as optimistic as we otherwise might would be how hard we’ve been hit with injury yet again this preseason.

We had hopes that Max at least might be back early, but now they’re talking about around R7, and the same for Hayes, so that’s a big blow (especially as we don’t necessarily have any “easy” games in the first 7), as those two would have been the height component of our forward line, and Hayes presumably would have been the one doing the backup rucking, and we’re light-on for depth there.

We’ve also had a concerning lack of numbers on the track for a big chunk of the preseason, which has meant that while other teams were able to do full-team match sims, we’ve been doing 13 v 13 type stuff, and half ground drills.

We didn’t even have a proper intra-club game last week, so it seems as though we’re way behind, and going into the season with one hand tied behind our back, and likely to be up against it early.

If it wasn’t for all that I for one would be super-hopeful of us getting back to the sort of footy that got us to 8-3 last year, but now the odds are now looking pretty heavily against it.

It’s reminding me of our 2021 preseason, when we lost about 8 of our best 22 in the month or so leading up to R1.

Howard and Wilkie, Battle - Good, not great.
Coffield - Jury is out

IMO - Defence still sits behind the likes or Richmond, Geelong, Melbourne, Brisbane, Carlton, Collingwood, Freo, Sydney and maybe even WC.
Wilkie is bloody good at what he does, hence making the AA squad last season.

It is definitely a very solid defence we have, and Coffield looked set to absolutely explode this time last year, before doing his ACL.

We conceded the 7th-lowest amount of scores against last year (and just one more point than Carlton in 6th, off a much harder draw) and that’s despite the fact we on average played a team who finished in the top 8 every second week of the season. Melbourne with 10 the only other team to play double-figure games against eventual finalists.

Talk is that Ross will push a 7th back this year, so we could be very hard to score against.

Tanking for Harley Reid!

Carlton played 11 games against eventual finalists. St Kilda 12.

Our draw was considered the easiest before the season started.

Butler’s 2020 season was very good but he has returned to his level.
His role has changed since 2020, presumably because we got Higgins at the end of that season, and he’s not as defensively capable as Dan.

So Dan’s role became much more defensive, while Higgo is the attacking threat.

And Dan is absolutely elite defensively. His pressure numbers would be as good as anyone up forward in the league.

So his “level” is still very high, just in a different, less flashy role.

Our draw was considered the easiest before the season started.

You didn’t play any of the top 3 twice, compared to us playing the two grand finalists twice, you played two of the top 6 twice, compared to 4 for us.

You got to play a whopping 16 of your 22 games on your home grounds! We played just 12 at our home ground.

You played just 6 games interstate/Geelong, while we played 8.

You played just two of the top 6 teams interstate, or in Geelong, whereas we played 4 of the top 6 there.

We didn’t play any of the bottom 5 twice, while you played two of them twice.

So effectively you swapped two of our games against top 3 or 6 teams with two extra games against bottom 5 teams, while playing 4 extra games on your home grounds, 2 less games interstate or in Geelong, and two less games against top 6 teams interstate or in Geelong!

However it was rated in the preseason it was a MUCH easier draw than ours. Our one was brutal, especially for a team that missed the finals the previous year.

No doubt the Saints had an incredibly tough season. But the original facts were incorrect.

I thought Ross might bring a bit more of a defensive mindset. But seems they want to run and gun which is probably more in line with the way things are at the moment in the league. They have a few key forwards out so wouldn’t help running down the ground looking for a target.
Not sure we’re they’re heading. I think Ross will still improve them but maybe he’ll need to slow things up at times.
