Good point. However, how do you explain St Kilda's years before Sydney's or Brisbane's or any other club's assistance packages?
back in the period before wwII or after? that period in the early 1900's was tough, 9 spoons(in 13 years) by 1910.
almost as tough as the post-war period 6 spoons in 10 years, found it particularly traumatizing.
or late 70-80's period 7 spoons in 11 years after zoning was removed from us and given to another club, yeah we got Plugger, but lost a team full of stars that propelled another club from the mire into stardom for a decade and allowed them to bridge that gap between poor crap club and successful Big Melbourne team.

we're a poor club, couldn't afford to buy the best players, zoning, a heap of reasons, plenty of our own doing, quite a few not. come the AFL period though we've been a middling team, better than some, worse than others, could have had 3 flags with some luck, which would put us up there with the better teams in the AFL period. we didn't, so were not

We don't get the gifts that other clubs do (fixturing/academies), so everything is just that little bit harder, how's your last 24 years gone? before you know it 24 turns into 30, maybe you get your shot, but then injuries to key players mean you don't quite grasp what you know you should, 30 turns into 35, its very easy to bumble along as I'm quite sure you know.

as for our current situation, I heard N Roo utter 3 words and I think it sums us up at the moment, crisis of confidence. Injuries to a few key players, among many others, suspensions, inconsistency of the team because of those, not 1 area of the ground has been settled for more then 2-3 games, poor form from senior players and kids that are struggling 2nd-3rd year( which happens to many) and a pretty hectic fixture to start the year (5th interstate trip this weekend). things have just snowballed, not to say we are top 4, but we are better than our position says.

Everyone already said our midfield sucked so not surprising we go worse when they are playing horribly and no star mid to power through and ignite the others.

The attacks on Ross are humorous, no one had us making finals last year, very few had us making finals this year, he's got 12 games this year and of all next year, if we still stink next year then I doubt he sees out his last year

The attacks on Ross are only as humorous as the attacks on the list.

No part of the club is firing right now but plenty wanna boil it down to just being one thing wrong.

I'm not boiling it down to 1 thing, it's just the attacks on Ross are premature at best.

I think a level of criticism for this shitful footy we’re playing, if you agree it’s not just one thing, leveled at Ross is fair. Some are going too hard for sure but others are defending him just as ridiculously

I'm just defending the idea that Ross is the reason for all of it and needs terminating.

for sure I think we play defense-first football based on our strengths, but I don't think Ross wants them to be so slow with the ball going forward. It's not how we wanted to play last year, it's not how we played pre-season and not how we played in the early rounds.

He was saying those same lines at Freo though the last few years about how we were playing wasn’t how he wanted us to play & every week we’d move the ball slowly, making sloppy skill errors and dumping kicks over forwards heads to the advantage of defenders & he’s trotting out another version of it’s not my fault.

The only time he was any good we had a spine of McPharlin, Michael Johnson, Sandilands, Mundy, Fyfe, Pav plus the likes of S Hill, Mick Barlow, Ballantyne, Walters, Mayne, Ibbotson, Crowley, Duffield, Lee Spurr, Mzungu and some other handy role players.

I’m sure someone could come up with an equally good or better list of Saints players from when they were good under Lyon.

He’s great at getting a kamikaze level of buy in & effort over a season but you still need the cattle. And once it collapses & the belief stops it’s a disaster. And really soul destroying to try & support. I lost all interest his last season.

I’ve never been happier to see the back of a bloke but there’s still people on our board who think he’s the messiah.

Looks like the Saints are playing seven consecutive interstate sides from today. Indeed 9 from 11, + bye. They’ll actually play West Coast again before they next face one of the nine other Vics.
how many are away games for the saints?

Marshall, Wilkie, Sinclair, Steele, Crouch, NWM, King would get a game with anyone. (Maybe not on current form, but imagine you were picking a team pre Round 1 2024). Hill when in form. Higgins would get a game with most teams.

2-3 years ago I would've added Membrey and Ross. Definitely not anymore.

Saints list isn't terrible.

The biggest problem is most of those players are 28 or more. As many have said, the Saints young group looks OK rather than uber promising.

Bottom line- St Kilda needs some diamonds to emerge from the rough. Only time will tell.
The blokes I bolded and underlined that you mentioned are solid players.

If all of those blokes are fit and in good form would improve the saints finals chances.

Marshall is an ok ruckman.

Wilkie is ok.

I already said my thoughts on Sinclair. Solid player. If Steele doesnt want to be the next captain, I think Sinclair should be the next captain for the next 3 or 4 seasons.

Steele is easily the saints best inside mid. But he isnt motivated. I dont blame him. If the saints won a couple of lase games and are in the 8, he would be motivated in doing well.

Crouch can get 25-30 disposals in a good day. If he is the 2nd best inside mid behind steele, Saints struggle. If Steele and Sinclair get 25 disposals per game or consistently do well like in 2023, very likely saints make finals.

I know its Ironic for a dockers fan to talk about trades.

But you bring in Experienced players like Steele and Hill through trades to improve the squad. Crouch being a free agent was a solid pick up.

Do you really want to go and Do A North melbourne type rebuild of 2020-2024? No you dont.

In any rebuild that has to flush out an ageing squad, Its tempting to get 6-8 kids in the draft for 3 years in a row. thats nice to get 18 to 24 teenagers in 3 years. But can you tolerate a 2 or 3 win season?

Teams can rebuild and get 5 or 6 kids in the draft each year but trade in 2 or 3 experienced players from other clubs in a 3 year period. That means getting 5 or 6 or 7 wins each year. 16th out of 18th means a pick 3 in most drafts. it might get pushed back with free agency compo and Academy pick or Father son picks

You do get 15 to 18 teenagers in 3 years and 6 to 9 players from other AFL clubs reagrdless if they were delisted or traded or taken as free agents. It doesnt matter if they are list cloggers for the next 2 or 3 years.

The Saints haven’t received more than the minimum yearly AFL funding since the early 2000s? I find that hard to believe. In fact North and St Kilda are two of the biggest financial drainers of the Melbourne clubs during this time.

They bought the AFL a stadium.

They really should be winning today...

This game is so Ross Lyon.

Saints dominating most of the game so far for 1 goal.

Makes you wonder how much time Ross has as a coach when he still coaches like it is 2003. Saints list is not to bad but they are held back by the coaching style.

Saints lose to the Eagles it would be a devastating blow for a team that played finals last season.

Should we?
For a team that played finals last season with no real omissions to what you are fielding now against last years wooden spooners most would say Yes regardless of venue.

The early part was exactly like Freo back then. Dominated the play & kept kicking it over the forwards heads straight to Gov & Barrass. Was giving me PTSD from the later Derby’s he coached.

Nice to see some better kicks in from Henry & NWM.

Based on form, which I'd day is a more important factor than whether we were any good last season, we should be losing this by 6 goals.
