Do lots of early picks win you a premiership?
Please use an example of a team that has had lots and lots and lots and lots of early picks.
?

It's not about getting picks - it's about getting good players.

Not sure if you're aware, but this thing called the Draft is a system where the best players get picked in order.

So the higher up the order your pick is, the better chance you have of getting a good player, and being able to get the kid that you have identified that you want. The more picks you have, the higher percentage that you pick a good player. The more picks you have, the higher chance you get more than one good player.

As for your question:

West Coast
Hawthorn
Geelong
Melbourne
Collingwood
Bulldogs

All those clubs won flags because they were able to get gun players from the high end of the Draft.

3: Walter
9: Read
14: Rogers....
That seems different to the system you described.

Could be hard to compete at that level.
Probably better to focus on playing good footy and ignore the calls for us to be corrupt.

Very brave finish to the season by St Kilda.

But no good draft pick.

Massive salary cap to spend that nobody wants.

Silvagni making a mess of the list.

And Ross “flood the backline” Lyon at the helm.

Not much to be excited about in 2025….
I didn't see the backline being flooded against your mob.

You are just used to it.

So many times all 18 of your players were zoning our back half.

Not a single player within 120m of your own goal.

The same competitive but not contending gameplan Lyon has coached his entire career.

Just watched some snippets. Nah.

Modern footy has zone defences, alot of them are most if not whole of team.

Ross certainly has a good defensive system but we managed 82 points against Sydney (to win) then 113, 108, 99, 107 and 76 (to win against you) with two shitful performance in their for good measure.

The whole "flood the backline" thing just doesnt really stack anymore.

I'm very happy if StKilda's opponents have a low scoring game.

Funny, when you have injuries its "Carlton Reserves" but when we did at the start of the year it didnt matter.

Strong argument to be made that finishing 8th (and a formline with 3 wins in your last 9 weeks against Richmond, North and West Coast) is firmly in no mans land with us.
So The Saints finished 12th with 11 wins, 12 losses and a percentage of 99.4.

I posted this a few pages back...

Remember the 1st 16 games of the saints season? 6 wins and 10 losses. Most of the neutrals just bagged out the saints.

I didnt. You even agreed that saints lost some narrow games in the 1st half of the season. Turn 4 narrow losses into 4 narrow wins and saints would of been posting a 10 win and 6 loss record.

Considering how the saints went in the last 7 or so games in the season, that is 5 wins and 2 losses.

So saints could of had 15 wins 8 losses and a percentage of 99.4 good enough for 5th or 6th. So a home elim final at the MCG.

Very similar season to North Melbourne. Had North won rounds 2 through to 14 they would have finished on 15 wins and probably fifth spot.

Fact is, Saints had a pretty rubbish first 15 games of the year. Everyone knows their problem - midfield. It is brought on by poor drafting 2013 - 2020 and to be legitimate contender they need to fix it.

There were several occasions Membrey marked on the wing in your back half and had to play some solitaire waiting for a target to run ahead.

So, no other teams flood the backline?

Clutching.

That happened after repeat inside 50s against.

We did get pushed deeper and deeper over the period but it wasn't indicative of the whole match.

We def get numbers back but we also almost always have appropriate representation ahead of the ball.

We're number 1 in the league for scoring from possession chains starting in the backline. We couldn't do that without anyone to kick to

Not contending? Lyon's made three GFs, and admittedly hasn't won any, but none of them were far away. It's way more than Carlton have done this century in terms of 'contending'.

Anyway, Carlton fans flooding this thread to cope after the weekend is so on brand. Punching down is a favourite Carlton pastime and you can't even do that anymore.

Anyone can look up a dictionary when it suits them!

I looked it up in the dictionary. You are wrong.

That's literally modern football. Every single side does it

Actually, the definition applies to his response!

Defend Ross harder gents.

Hope your players enjoy Bali this week. see you next year.

Pretty much this.

Im not gonna defend umpiring in general this year its been deplorable (and the first 5 minutes of this game was beyond thunderdome shit, just everything play on) but it evens out. The fact it was 7-1 at one point and wound up having a total differential of +2 for us also means you had a ****ing run at some point.

Blaming it for losing the game is smooth brain shit.
100%

9-0 free kicks in the entire last qtr Carlton's way and still couldn't help them get across the line

Need to get rid of Robert Harvey

Consistently butchers and mismanages midfields

Was poor at Hawthorn and made it everyone else's fault

St Kilda need a decent midfield coach
