What a shocker
He managed to get through his whole thesis without mentioning that Sydney may be at a disadvantage having to play at the MCG against a Victorian side on their home ground.
And Richmond beat us because they applied pressure for 4 quarters lol

Thanks for everyone that has i have no interest in reading bullshit from some henry the 3rd

Swans talk starts 9:30mins into the video, and as Kane says. Giants talk big before our Derbies but have lost 5 of the last 6.

If NSW footy was a 90s teen movie, the Swans would be the guys pulling up in the convertible wearing varsity jackets and calling GWS losers from across the school yard

That is not good as that is the guy that ends up being embarrassed/exposed as a fraud at the end of the movie and also loses the girl to the nerd.

I was very disappointed with Peter Monagle's last Mongrel review of a Swans game and I still don't much like his tone or his writing BUT he actually asks some very valid questions that are worth thinking about. Not to be glossed over.

maybe not glossed over, but that mongrel punt review could've been written by any one of the mainstream vic footy media heads ... desperate to deflect from sydney's dominance, and to find weaknesses

to me, the main take from that article was that the giants deserve all the credit for dragging back a 58-point margin to 27, and the suggestion that outcome somehow exposes flaws in the swans
there was mention of the "proforma swans" stuff, and references to the swans' slow starts ... but without a proper analysis from the swans' perspective of what that really meant

and there was this line that stumped me: "When Hogan marked strongly in the opening minutes of the second quarter and goaled truly to put the Giants in front for the first time, it did look like an upset may be on the cards, but this is the Swans circa 2024"
knowing what the writer knows about the swans this season, how could the giants taking a three-point lead early in the second quarter be any kind of clue to an "upset"???

another way of reviewing this game would be: the swans adjusted to a run of slow starts by holding steady in the first quarter, in tough, wet conditions, then rather than conceding a start of 4-6 goals as in recent weeks, they put the game away running up a 10-goal lead either side of halftime, before simply managing the inevitable response from a team good enough to potentially finish top four and running out comfortable winners ... again
i get that it must be a bit boring and frustrating for the football media to be staring at a potential one-team competition this year, but this sort of review is also just so much wishful thinking
yes, the giants rallied, against their home-town rivals, but it would have been a very bad look had they not rallied, and instead been smashed by 80-odd points ... of course they were going to respond!

i am a big fan of the mongrel punt but that review got the focus all wrong

Just opened up the HUN's AFL page online. Not a single story about our amazing domination of the competition. Oh well, shouldn't expect anything more.

the media fetishised over collingwood's ability to win close games last season, all the way to the premiership, how tough and resilient they were, what it said about them as a team ... and in fact they're still foaming over it this season

the closest result in our 13 wins this season is 14 points (correct me if i'm wrong), and of course that was one of several games where the media pulled out various reasons we were "a bit lucky" to win at all ...
imagine a similar media scrutiny of all those close c'wood wins, the good fortune in those 50-50 moments, the dubious umpiring calls, etc etc

yet we've won all our games by more than two goals, and usually more than four, and according to media reports such as this latest mongrel punt review we're apparently only doing it with one good quarter or so each week, and we've probably peaked ...
it seems we've "peaked" now for the past six weeks or so

"The Giants won two quarters today on the scoreboard, and also broke even in the first quarter, so the Swans basically won the match with a scintillating 40-minutes of frenetic football which reaped ten goals."

yeah, funny that ...

As I said, not a fan of Monagle but I thought this bit deserved some thought:

Richmond beat Sydney earlier in the year by not letting them get a run of goals and by maintaining enough pressure for long enough, for four quarters, so they could try and snatch a victory in the last few minutes. The Swans may have been having a down day, but it worked.
The Giants won two quarters today on the scoreboard, and also broke even in the first quarter, so the Swans basically won the match with a scintillating 40-minutes of frenetic football which reaped ten goals. Having watched the Blues and the Lions this weekend, who both played four quarters of sustained pressure football, with some flair as well, both of these clubs now represent a ‘clear and present danger’ for the Swans, especially if the Swans start to drink their own bath water.
With Sydney kicking ten-straight goals today it masked the problem of the Giants outscoring the Swans eight goals to three to close out the match after the 10-minute mark of the third quarter. The Swans were comprehensively beaten in the last quarter and a bit of the match, and they were unable to stop the Giants during their third and fourth quarter five goal run-on.
Horse didn’t look happy during the game today and it may be for good reason. I reckon Horse did not think this was a ‘super-win’, and given the look on his face, he saw flaws for concern in the Swans game today."
Apologies for my mug in the copy, couldn't get rid of it.
At the game, my son and I were a bit concerned with our reaction when the Giants came back at us. To an extent we reverted to 2023 characteristics. Apparently Horse was also not happy. The "eight goals to three to close out the match" is the thing that concerns me. We have looked incredibly fit so far but last night we didn't. That's what I thought was worthwhile in the review.
