This thread shows we’ve really been spoilt for defenders this century.

C.Bolton, Grundy, Richards, LRT, Barry, Rampe, Shaw, McVeigh, Malceski, Kennelly, Mattner, Smith, Lloyd. Try picking just 7 of them.
I can’t choose!! I wants them all in!

I have no problem with CI. He created a point of discussion and made me think about players from 15 years ago.

Also I am thinking is it about the best players or the best position players.

Generally AA selects about 6 or 7 mids, on field, and more on the bench.

I think i will have a crack myself.

All good CI.

This is harder then I thought and I have changed the team 12 times already.

Bench of 6 and I want to make it 7 with Craig BOLTON.

Great Grand Final efforts helped some players.

B: SMITH GRUNDY BARRY

HB: KENNELLY RICHARDS RAMPE

C: McVEIGH KIRK HANNEBERY

HF: GOODES HALL O'KEEFE

F: O'LOUGHLIN FRANKLIN PARKER

FOLL: PYKE KENNEDY BOLTON

BENCH: ROBERTS-THOMSON, JETTA, CROUCH, JACK, MALCESKI, JOLLY

Too many brilliant defenders making this a nightmare. Then I realised Kelly retired in 2002, so he makes it into the 21st century team.

As there is no other criteria other than having played more than 50 matches I’m picking Kelly in grade A form. Booyah!

B: Smith, Grundy, Barry

HB: Kennelly, LRT, Rampe

C: McVEIGH Kennedy HANNEBERY

HF: A Goodes, B Hall, R O'Keefe

F: M O'LAoughlin, L Franklin, L Parker

FOLL: Ball, P Kelly, B Kirk

BENCH: J Bolton, K Jack, N Malceski

I don't think Kelly quite makes it as sure he played in the 21st century but his best football was in the 20th century. Technically Tony Lockett played in the 21st century, but no one would stick him in the Swans best 22 of the 21st century.

Meh, I’m keeping him. See you on the field:cool:

Interesting debate. I agree with Ticky about Kelly, if he played 50 games this century.

There are four players who select themselves.

Stuey Maxfield is one of the first selected IMO for multiple on and off ground reasons.

The defence is tough however there is one player who is key to it and the first selected and that is Craig Bolton.

Goodesy and Franklin select themselves as out and out champions.

something that was originally started for a book on afl in the 21st century but never got published which i continued with anyway.

basically just a best 22 of this century with a minimum of 50 games to qualify.

HB: J.MCVEIGH* - C.BOLTON - J.LLOYD*
C: D.HANNEBERY - J.KENNEDY* - L.PARKER*
HF: A.GOODES - B.HALL (vc) - R.O’KEEFE
FF: M.O’LOUGHLIN - L.FRANKLIN* - N.DAVIS
RR: S.MUMFORD - B.KIRK (c) - K.JACK
INT: P.WILLIAMS - J.BOLTON - W.SCHWASS - B.MATHEWS
COACH: PAUL ROOS

The main tough decision for me was nick davis ahead of papley and heeney. in the end the fact that without him the swans dont win the 05 premiership was too hard to ignore and he did kick more goals both in total and on average than both those players.

thoughts?
Cannot believe no Maxfield who should be Captain

Only decent team posted so far

My effort:

FB: T.RICHARDS - H.GRUNDY - M.MATTNER
HB: J.MCVEIGH - C.BOLTON - N.MALCESKI
C: D.HANNEBERY - J.KENNEDY - P.WILLIAMS
HF: A.GOODES - B.HALL - R.O’KEEFE
FF: M.O’LOUGHLIN - L.FRANKLIN - I.HEENEY
RR: S.MUMFORD - B.KIRK - J.BOLTON
INT: S.MAXFIELD - L.PARKER - R.SHAW - K.JACK
COACH: PAUL ROOS
Maxfield IS ON THE GROUND before Williams !

I've tried to pick a balanced side, so it means a few very good players miss out. The only exception to that is the very tall forward line, but I couldn't squeeze it any further.

FB - Smith Grundy Rampe
HB - Malceski Bolton McVeigh
C - Maxwell Kennedy Jetta
HF - Goodes Franklin O'Keefe
FF - Davis Hall O'Loughlin
R - Ball Kirk Bolton
INT - Shaw Hannebery Mumford Parker

Unsurprisingly it's the calibre of backs that miss out that is the hardest to stomach.
