Teams you think will definitely not make the 8

Adelaide possible top 8 and we're no chance? If we beat them this weekend they'll be 0-4 and we'll be 3-1.

Outstanding logic.

I can't believe I ever doubted St. Kilda's genuine quality. To think that I wrote them off before they'd even embarrassed themselves at home with Adelaide, a team without a single win as yet...

Finals groupings

Certainty:
Hawthorn

Very likely (can only be stopped by horrific injury run):
Geelong
Fremantle

Likely:
Port Adelaide
Sydney
North Melbourne
Essendon
Collingwood

50/50:
West Coast

Unlikely:
Adelaide
Richmond

Very unlikely (need bad luck to befall more likely teams):
Gold Coast
Western Bulldogs

Miracle required:
St Kilda
Carlton
GWS
Melbourne
Brisbane

No chance:
none (few teams not far away though)

Id wack Geel and Freo in the certainty to play finals.
Bris, Melb and Carl with no chance.
Id add Adel, GC, Syd and Dogs to 50/50.

And Essendon embarrassed themselves against a less than full strength Freo so what's the difference?

Both our teams are 2-2, you wouldn't want to lose to us this Saturday as that really would be embarrassing.

Because Adelaide at Etihad is just as daunting as Fremantle in Perth...

Have you seen Adelaides draw?

They could be on a 10 game winning streak when they start finals this year!

Because Adelaide at Etihad is just as daunting as Fremantle in Perth...

Freo were missing 4 of their best players Fyfe, Barlow, Mayne and Walters and a lot of people tipped Essendon to win.

We were flat against Adelaide after playing in warm conditions in Perth the week before, you might struggle this weekend too for similar reasons.

Hhhmmmm we have in the next 2 and a half months Carlton and Adelaide at home, Essendon, Melbourne and Gold Coast away, Fremantle and Brisbane home, Collingwood and Port away then Melbourne again. If we happen to get some momentum heading into the bye after the Melbourne away game would we still be an automatic write off?

Nah no chance we will beat you

Certainty:
Hawthorn
Fremantle
Geelong
Essendon (unless ASADA take them down)

Likely:
Port Adelaide
North Melbourne
Collingwood

The rest of the league is a mess and I don't know what to think of them.

The following might be better than the footy they are playing.

Sydney
Gold Coast
West Coast
Richmond

The following might be improving.

Western Bulldogs
Adelaide
St Kilda
GWS (maybe)
Melbourne

The following are idiots for sacking their coaches, recruiting second hand players, and/or destabilising their culture.

Carlton
Brisbane Lions
+ Sydney (If I can count them twice)
and maybe Melbourne (but I'd trace that back to when they sacked Bailey for only winning 8 games in 2010 and 2011)

Lol, and this ladies and gentlemen, is how you derail a thread. We're talking finals and who will and wont make it. Not this rubbish.

Absolutely. There is no way bombers will win finals with Daniher being number one KPf just yet either. We have to wait and see how things pan out when Be"chambers and Ryder return.

Not sure if the team can runout a season yet. However, Bomber's game plan is about hanging onto the ball so that the opposition does all the running. Essendon also bats very deep in the midfield now. Watson, Goddard & Stanton are well known but Zaharakis, Myers, Melksham, Hocking & Howlett are all at a new level. This will hold the team in good sted over the season. Managing Chappy Winderlich & Fletch will be important.

As a supporter lam very excited but they haven't proven anything yet.
It's difficult to make any calls about Essendon's mid tier players this early on in the season because they play like April champions every season. The way Fremantle dismantled the possession game must be a real concern though. I know it was at Subiaco but even if the Essendon midfield has improved, I really doubt they have the skill level to implement that style effectively in September.

Only thing I disagree with is
I'm not confident on the Roos making the top 4, but they're hardly in the unlikely basket! I'd have thought beating Sydney in Sydney convincingly was a good enough sign of where the roos are at.

agree with all this except would move essendon down one rung

lost two games to teams in the certainty bracket (and forced a team clubs have struggled to beat for the best part of a year to fight for a win).
Touch more than likely at this stage we make it.
We're being talked about as likely top 4. I think top 8 is ours barring a 2013 repeat where we have to be removed

I actually missed the whole game (effing collingwood gf made me come with her to watch Bob Downe!!) However, Essendon clearly mismanaged the whole week naming Fletch and Chapman when they weren't going to play and then getting struck down by a virus and not being able to replace players other than Myers ... then Goddard in the warm up was the final insult. Essendon was missing just as much as Freo and it was on their home patch. However, that doesn't excuse a lame effort ... but illness through the camp does.

Lets hold off judgement on Essendon .. until halfway through August!
