“I’m quite raw in that area still but so keen to get to work in the midfield.

“For now, I would be more confident down back, but that doesn’t mean I’m not willing and able to grow in the midfield.”

That’s a quote from Bo Allan in the article West Coast just posted

Really hope he or Ginbey can become genuine midfielders or at least one of them.
I think he’s going to be a gun defender but anything midfield wise is a bonus. Setting ourselves up for disappointment otherwise.

The Jagga Smith not bulking up is a weird take. You don't want an 18 year old trying to bulk on his own, would risk a huge loss of fitness and possible injury trying to over do it. With a dedicated weights program and nutritionist it'd make a huge difference.
Why would he be on his own? Surely these top rated kids are working closely with strength coaches and nutritionists already. The recent trend has been for players to try and be ready to play rnd 1 as much as possible, and that kid looks miles off it.

So pick 3 landed a total of:

Bo Allan, Liam Baker, Matt Owies and mystery pick 45.

Pick 45 Urquhart or

Gross or

Ough or a

Barret

So four players. For pick 3 being a single player.

How is this not a win?
The only way it's a massive loss for us is if pick 3 ends up being an multi time Brownlow medalist and premiership player. And even then I wouldn't be certain he would pan out that way if we drafted him. Our club is a shambles and not the most ideal place for developing youngsters right now.

Can't say I really buy the "gentleman's agreement" Richmond not bidding on Allan thing.

Daresay they just didn't want him as they didn't rate him as high as others. Simple as that

Saints could've picked him, Melbourne could've picked him, Port could've picked him, they all chose to pass and he got selected by the club that clearly rates him in the range in the draft he was initially tipped to go in, before he randomly bolted into the top 10 the last couple weeks.

Is it confirmed Freo offered 17 + 30 for 15?

Wish we had taken that if that was the case

I don't mind Bo Allen but definitely would have preferred Reid and another early pick tonight would be juicy

I'd expect they'd be working on strength and fitness, not bulk. There's still a chance that gaining muscle at too early and age can stunt an individuals growth.

Look at the last 4 flags and their success is pinned to run and carry and ball use off the half back line.

Pies resurgence 2022/23 daicos.
Lions 23/24 kitty colman/zorko
Geelong 23 Stewart Tuohy
Richmond 20 baker houli

The quarter back is in vogue.

I think our 30 and Hawks F2 for Bombers 37 and F1 is still very favourable to us but works for them too
That's quite even deal, and normally works. But given what happened over night, we couldn't get back in with overs deals and what Norf gave up. I feel as they want Shanahan, they have to stump up overs to come and get him.

Cal said there would have been an exchange of picks or something as well, it wasn't as straightforward as 30 for sliding down 2 places.

Kids are often thrown around in unfamiliar positions in the u18's to fit into the team.
Some may never play there again, whilst some may find a new role they never played in before.
It's natural that it will take some time to get used to a new position than then the one you're been playing in prior.

Harry Edwards had a growth spurt after being a midfielder. It took him a long while to develop into a good key defender.

I don’t think it was Pick 30 but Freo did offer a deal that we shared with Port ..

He had the entire year off school. He finished school I'm 2023. He had all the time in the world to focus on nutrition and strength and conditioning. 5kg of upper body mass will not making him slower but it will make him more powerful and durable. I for one am a bit perplexed as to why he didn't.

He played two VFL games for 24 and 27 touches. He is definitely not miles off it. I think a preseason at the Tigers and he'll be good to go.

Probably metabolism as much as anything. I'm sure his strength has improved, the bulk will come.
