We need a gorilla defender who realises he has the size of a gorilla and actually wants to play like one.
Agree with other posts from other threads that Carlile could make a good third tall back but we need a proper FB more.

1. Midfielder who can kick 40 metres to a position

2. 195cm+ defender

3. Midfielder who can kick 40 metres to a position
What about a midfielder who runs 60m to collect the kick to position?

We need talls.

Two SA boys to keep an eye on (both forwards):

Darcy Hourigan from South Adelaide:
Made his SANFL league debut at 15 IIRC. He's 192cm, 91kg but despite his relatively short size for a tall forward, he plays incredibly well. His style of play is, I think, a mix between Jack Darling and Fevola. He has a great contested mark, although he'd need to build up his strength if he wanted to do this at AFL level as well. Having said that, I reckon that he'd be ready for AFL football in his fist year and could play very well. His can kick long and he can kick straight. As a tall, he will probably slide down the draft a little, much like Darling, Kersten and Grundy have done in recent years.

Ryan Simister from West Adelaide:
Simister isn't often talked about as a potential draftee, but I rate him. 196cm and 100kg, his size and strength are definitely an asset. His main strength is his tap work in the ruck - it's phenomenal for someone of his age, but unless he grows some more, he's probably too short to make it in the AFL as a first ruck. He does play forward occasionally and while he doesn't set the world on fire, he's serviceable and he has natural footy skills. Reminds me a little bit of our very own Jarrad Redden.

Other names to consider and remember: Tom Boyd (Vic Metro) although he'll be gone by our pick. Cain Tickner (QLD), is a forward but can run through the midfield - reminds me of Josh Kennedy from the Eagles. Cam Conlon (Vic Metro), reminds me of Kurt Tippet.

FWIW, I'm going to some more SANFL U18 and reserves game this year and I'll let you know of any real stand out KPD's. There's some lad from Sturt with a funny name (but I can't remember what it was) and he looked pretty good from what I saw, so I'll keep an eye on him.

hourigan is one i will be interested in. will likely have a good champs but really interested in how good judges think he will step up to afl level. hopefully not another panos / sully type. chris25 seems to think not. he kicks goals at ressie level for south. is also touted as a backman so could be a good strong fb ifhe doesnt work out as a key forward?

if he is around for one of our picks after the first round i hope we add him to our list. talls are a definite must for us. conlon is meant to be quite athletic and is 198cm tall proper forward 2nd ruck type. although we have 197cm butch and 197/198 cm shaw if conlon is around at our 2nd pick and looks promising then we should add him. stockpile promising talls now i reckon.

have to watch champs for other key talls to emerge but doubt any would be worth our first pick since boyd would be gone. tickner is attached to brisbane through the academy so any team can bid for him like f/s works but brissie match and he goes there. that would happen pre-draft and pre-trade period like f/s you would think

some late options for talls should emerge though, and i hope we clear some guys like thomas/logan and hitchcock at the end of the season and add some project key position players late in the draft or through rookie.

erin wasley-black is the nt captain and a promising player. gws can trade him like they did with neade. someone we should look at if the price is not too high.

not a fan of using late picks on KPP unless they are projects or an obvious deficiency that our development team think they can fix. Even on any sort of player really but you can find hidden gems in hard working flankers/mids a lot more often than KPP.

drafting would really come down to our first 2 picks and where we use them. i am all for best available on first round and then KPP player on second. If we recruit a defender in FA/trade i'd prefer KPF in draft and vice versa if we recruit a forward. as for list management our long term defence is Hombsch Clurey and Trengove throw in Carlile for another 5 years too. i dont see our long term defenders as much a worry as our forwards (Butcher, Shaw) but we need more of both.

If you're looking for a mature aged, late pick up then I think Matt Sully from Geelong could be the guy - 21 years old, 195cm, 95kg. Has improved a fair bit this season, and played on the likes of Koschitzke in the VFL. Just a name for you.

Luke Andruszkiewicz?

some late options for talls should emerge though

Like 21 year old Tom Langford at North Adelaide? Only 192cm, but could be developed into a workhorse CHF type.

We need to recruit 6 more 195+cm KPP's who are at least 100kgs within 2 years of being on our list in one draft/trade period and get Burgess to train them so they can run all day.

We looked like shrimps out there yesterday. Look at Adelaide they have lost Bock and Davis to expansion sides, Tippet and Gunston walked, Walker out for 12 months, yet they can throw Lynch and Jenkins into the KFP slots and not miss a beat and Talia and Rutten are stable KPD's. Even McKernan can be trown forward or back or into the ruck.

Matthew Rendell as a 6 foot 6 inch player, understood the value of big strong players whilst he was the crows head recruiter. **** I wish our head recruiters over the last decade had played as a KPP.

i agree reh.

think this years draft is lean on talls but can still rookie a mature ager for insurance (unless we trade in a ready kpd ie day/keefe)

and look at a late draft/rookie kpp like jed redden etc. hourigan in the draft is also an option.

next year there looks like some real good key forward options with durdin watchman and goddard all being mentioned as good talents.

adding 6 in one off-season is impossible, but we can get a few more on our list in the next 2 - 3 off-seasons.

If the trade involved getting gorringe and day to port, and enabled us to retain our first pick in draft then I would help butcher pack his bags. Of course we would have to give up more to seal deal.

Another along the Lachie Keefe lines, Ben Griffiths from Richmond. 22 year old 2m/104kg and one of the biggest kicks in the league. He started as a CHF moved to full back, always seems to play well when I watch the tigs, but seems Hardwick prefers to see Chaplin spud it up or Rance get a bag kicked on him week in week out. Very likely that he would want out, not sure if he's contracted, but I reckon if we were serious a deal would get done. In lieu of Mitch Farmer maybe Ben Newton would tickle their fancy.

Didn't mind Griffiths from what I've seen of him up forward, not sure what he's like defensively, but in our current position, anyone of that height looks good.

Could Trade for Matt Thomas, Isnt Richmond where he was going to go in the 1st place last year? Plus the Choco connection

A few names of mature state leaguers. Worth drafting late?

Andrew Ainger (Woodville-West Torrens) - 197cm former South Adelaide forward, originally from Canberra. Has kicked 25 goals so far in the SANFL this year, which is hte most by any player. Will be 26 next year.
Piva Wright (Redland, NEAFL) - is 191cm former Richmond rookie defender. Plays like a tall fwiw. Reportedly a good spoiler of the ball. He's a big unit at 98kg and he's of Samoan heritage. Can't really find much info about his venture with Richmond last year but apparently was very highly rated. Plays like Mal Michael.
Dean Galea (Port Melbourne) - is only 188cm but is a proven forward kicking 70 goals in 2010 and is currently sitting 2nd on the goal kicking tally, albeit at VFL level.
Michael Lourey (Frankston) - 194cm and 24 years old. with strong hands in contested situations and a decent kick. Also has a good defensive aspect to his game, although can be lazy at times. 3rd in VFL goal kicking tally so far this year. Has played in the VFL state squad.

This bloke ????

It would be good to have 3 blokes who can kick the ball like Hartlett, one down back, one in the middle and one in the forward line. So 2 more to go.

It would be good to have 3 blokes with the speed of Steven Motlop. I think Jake Neade has the pace and endurance but will need 2 or 3 more years to get an AFL body to last a season. Motlop didn't get there until his 4 season with Geelong ie last year was his break out year after not playing any games in his first year in 2009. Think he had an injury. So 2 more to go and a bit of patience with Jake.

And recruit a whole lot of KPP's and ruckman so we have 5 KPF's, 5 KPD's and 4 ruckman so if we have two injuries we can still play 2 ruckman. Plenty to go on this front.

We are pobably 2 drafts and trade periods away from getting close to what we need on our list to have 15 or 16 A-graders and push for top 4.

GOLD Coast ruckman Daniel Gorringe and North Melbourne's Dan Currie look increasingly likely to find new clubs next year given a lack of opportunities at their existing teams.
Gorringe has just been elevated to the Suns line-up after injuries to talls Zac Smith and Charlie Dixon but is being heavily courted by Adelaide and Victorian clubs.
The 2010 No.10 draft pick was playing at centre half-back and full-back in the Suns' NEAFL side before those injuries, with rivals well aware of his lack of chances at AFL level.
Contract talks seem destined to drift on until season's end.
