I'm wondering out loud here but do we have to offer Hartlett up perhaps?

I know what he can offer but for his position salary etc is he delivering?

I would seriously offer up Butcher, Hamish, Westhoff in trade discussions.

Butcher and Westhoff I would consider, but not Hartlett. His lack of consistency and presence when we need him definitely is annoying, but at his best he can rip a game apart like no other on our list, and I fully believe that he will grow in consistency over the years. Every team needs to have those x-factors, and it's not surprising that a guy who has only just played 50 games and has struggled with injuries is playing inconsistent football. Give him some time to learn to shake a tag and build up a consistent game.

Gold Coast don't need any of our players because they already have a high draft pick for every spot on the ground. The GC players need to want to come home otherwise we are not going to get them.

If a guy like Day wanted to come back it would cost something like our 1st pick + a decent player.
The decent player is the question. How decent? And yes I agree our first pick.

Which I would be tempted to do.

Hamish would be at the top of my trade list. Would be a brave trade for the Club to make but for the right reward I would seriously consider it...

I mentioned this after the game on Sunday and was shot down for it. My first priority is for Hamish to reach his potential on a consistent basis. I just don't think we will ever see it. Hope he proves me wrong.

Our players have been pretty loyal to Port during years when it would be easier to leave in the search of better development and success. I don't think we should be actively seeking to move on successful players. If the player wants to go... get the most you can for them. (I would have traded Jacobs!) If you have a surplus of a type of player move them to somewhere there is a need for that player and get compensation. I don't think w have an obvious excess. We have signed up almost all of our required players for next year so things look good. Another year of 2012 trading and drafting and our list is set. With Gold Coast cutting their list (Hinkley knowledge of their list), Gws still able to do Neade hombsch deals, Adelaide having late draft picks, free agency, money in the salary cap... it should be a good year to fill the last holes in our list. Anyway, something about giving loyalty to get loyalty.

lol.

name one team that can lose their first two rucks?

you have got it exactly the opposite to the truth.

we have ruck depth.

we lack quality rucks.

particularly we get beaten in the ruck taps and our rucks arent doing well around the ground consistently.

.......

West Coast could . They have Cox, Natinui and Lycett with Callum Sinclair on the rookie list. Sinclair played well against us and if he kicked straight West coast would have won. He missed 3 gettable goals. he backed up Cox as the middle 2 were injured.

Sinclair is the sort of ruckman I wanted on our rookie or main list ie picked up in the PSD or rookie draft. He is 23.5 years old, played for Port Melbourne, didn't get drafted after they went undefeated in 2011, went to WA and played for Subiaco in 2012 and the Eagles rookie listed him last December.

There's maybe a half dozen players in the league good enough to even consider trade Hartlett for. Sam Day isn't even close.

Is it safe for me to assume you think Hamish Hartlett is in the top 6 players in the league? ;)

They have been loyal as most have been paid well for mediocre results. Lets not forget this will likely be our 6th year without finals. Most of this is attributed the a lack of discipline by the players and not pushing themselves to their limits. Hamish IMO is not untouchable, for too long we have been caught up in what can be instead of what is!

Wouldn't be opposed to trading Hartlett if the trade is ripe for the picking.

That's right, we aren't talking trade Hartett for Watts or Sylvia but a potential blue chipper. Which was what Hamish is, potential

if west coast were missing cox and nicnat every punter would have money on the other team bar a struggler like melb/gws.

But is that because of Nic Nats rucking ability or marking ability gone missing???;)

Realistically there are only about half a dozen players who would leave their clubs that would be worth trading Hartlett for because they want to come here. Would I trade Hartlett for Pendulbry? Yep, but is Pendulbury someone who is looking for a trade to Port??

I don't attribute our recent onfield failure to a lack of player discipline but to a systemic failure at the club caused by a lack of finance and insular leadership. It's true the players were overpaid for poor results but that's the salary cap and that's a difficult topic. Players tend to want to go somewhere they think they can be successful. The club could have been abandoned but the core stayed. Sure they got paid well but footballers aren't on struggle street. There's plenty of options to do some directed enhancement to our playing list in the off season. I'm not totally against the idea of trading when you get a ridiculous offer but I don't think that will happen with hamish ATM.

I've been doing this the last few days, comparing similar players in terms of career length and games played etc. but I feel the need to do it again. Hartlett vs. Cotchin.

Cotchin a year ahead, but realistically 2 ahead due to Hartlett's leg and back injuries, both had injury issues early on. Cotchin had his first full season in 2011, then backed it up in 2012 and almost won the Brownlow.

I expect Hartlett in 2013 to be similar to Cotchin's 2011 (avg 24 disp, 15 brownlow votes), I'd say he's close to 8 votes already and if not for the last 3 games, would be above that disposal average.

Hopefully he can actually play all 22 games. He's definitely in my untouchables list.

In a hypothetical world where all players would be prepared to move to Port, I reckon there's quite a few players who we'd be prepared to trade Hartlett for - (some I've listed would perhaps be borderline)

- Dangerfield
- Walker
- Murphy
- Pendlebury
- Fyfe
- O'Meara
- Whitfield
- Patton (perhaps Cameron too)
- J Selwood
- Shuey
- Naitanui
- Franklin
- Ziebell
- Cotchin

I dunno if I'd trade him for Shuey or Ziebell.

Also, I'd definitely want Cameron before Patton. Kid is a goddamn jet.

Dont be surprised to see Port make a big play for Jack Redden... Heard he's very receptive to a move here too. Wants out of Brisvegas.

interesting. has had a poor year but is a very good footballer.

happy to send our first pick to them, would not extend much beyond that ie sacrificing a first 22 player + first pick.

i thought he might be contracted?

not a player type we are missing , we have a lot of his type, but would be a quality player for our 22 and our midfield. broadbents place in the side would be under massive pressure.
