The Cyril Rioli Myth = The Harley Bennell Reality?

People have such strange views on football. Why is it considered better to be a midfielder than a half forward ? Good midfielders are a dime a dozen. Give me a mercurial game-breaking forward any day of the week. You can count these guys on one hand. This is especially so in the modern game with it's ultra-defensive structures.

Time and time again, Rioli has shown that he cannot be defended for the entire game. If Rioli was able to get over his hamstring issues and develop as a midfielder, it would be a nice added string to his bow, but even if he never does, he is still a player who makes things happen, wins contests for the ball and brings his teammates into the game. He is one of those rare breed of footballers who can make things happen without any support from their teammates. These are the true guns. It doesn't matter whether they play back, forwards or in the middle.

This is a shocking thread. Why start a thread in praise of a young footballer when really the main premise was to bag out a freakish footballer who doesn't fit the normal stereotype?

Does the Richmond fan who started this thread like it when people bag Brett Deledio for not dominating in the middle? Maybe Deledio's best position is the back flank. Maybe that's where he properly maximise his god-given abilities. Does it make him any less of a footballer? Does it make Nathan Foley a better footballer purely because he plays as a midfielder? Pfft.

Big Footy at it's worst. Just a bunch of ignorant, cretinous Dream Team nerds trying to inflame the Hawthorn fans and bag out one of the better players in the game. Anyone who thinks Rioli is overrated has their head up their arse. They need to log out of their computer and actually get along to a game.

Such a good post mate. Good one.

Way too many 14 year old keyboard warriors on BF!

Rioli played well last night, so kudos.

However Bennell's better, and Rioli's still inconsistent. So whatever I said during the OP doesn't change because of last nights game.

You know Cyril only had 18 possessions last night?

Its just not good enough - he needs to get 20+ possessions to get a game.

The word is that Cyril will be dropped to the seconds next week, and Cameron Bruce is in. At least Bruce will get some possessions!!!!

I actually don't think Rioli playing midfield and getting 30 and 3 would make him a better player than 15 and 5.
Put yourself in the opposition coach shoes and ask yourself honestly.

I remember Daicos,Ablett,Blight playing on ball at various stages and they were terrific. But I know when I used to shit myself as an opposition supporter and it wasn't when they were in the middle I promise.

Mate that just makes way too much sense, is too intelligent and too well considered and thought out. Get TF off Bigfooty!!!

That's nice.
Well you've dug a nice little hole now, prepare for shovel loads of dirt throughout the year.;)

I would place this as one of the top 10 posts on BF since I've been here. The amount of dribble and pure hate on BF these days is reaching terrible levels. These days, it's impossible to appreciate a player for what he is and what he does...BF has to shoot him down.

If it's not Rioli it's Judd. If not Judd it's Ablett. If not Ablett it's Franklin. And so on and so on. Rioli would walk into every teams best today and god help the lot of us if he does get up to full fitness to play on the ball. It will be a carve up every week.

Just amazing how jealousies morph themselves into hate. BF at its finest.

And for the record, Bennell will be an absolute star. And so will Rioli who is well on the way. And so will D Swallow. And so will Scully. Just appreciate watching them as opposed to being petty and jealous little sh1ts!!!

Great post mate :thumbsu:

I actually use to love going on bigfooty but these days it just seems people will bag out all the stars or potential stars purely because they are tough guys behind a keyboard who have no talent.

I stated it earlier in this thread, enjoy what cyril can do, not what you think he should do. I just hope Clarko plays him permanent forward and just let him do what he loves doing. IMO, he will never be a gun mid, keep him forward.

I had the pleasure last night watching Bennell dominate in the pub before walking over to the MCG to see Cyril also play a blinder. This is why I go to the football, to see talented people do what I could only dream of doing.

Mate, football journos maybe reactionary and sensationalist at times, but it doesn't come even close to the stuff posted on here. Not even close. Here you have a bunch of plebs pissed off life writing about stuff they clearly don't understand. This whole thread is one big example of that.
Do not agree.

You get a mixed bag on BF, but some of the opinions are far more valuable than those expressed in the "footy media".

Lets face it, AFL coverage in Australia is an embarrassment most journos struggling to string coherent sentences together let alone maintain a cogent narrative.

100 monkeys with 100 typewriters.

Watch Rioli disappear next week.. Very inconsistent.

He really isn't that inconsistent, and his B&F finishes suggest this.

It's just that people expect him to be so much more.

Bennell has played 20 games in total that is way to small a sample size to claim he's more consistent.

Geez I wonder why that expectation exists.

It couldn't be because hawthorn supporter blow their collective loads every time little Cyril touches the ball, could it?

No, of course as hawthorn fans are the most sensible down to earth fans of all of big footy. Ludicrous suggestion, how silly of me.

There has to be another reason, for the time being the mystery remains.

Cyril is an average small forward. The things he does well, he does very well. Rarely produces games like last night, and is amazing to watch when he does. Lets see if he can back it up next week or go back into his shell like he usually does.

Gee wiz, a bunch of Geelong supporters flocking to a Hawk related thread like a bunch of deperate seagulls around a crust of bread. Just for something completely different....

If you watch last nights game St Kilda defenders left it wide open for small forwards to get goals. Any small forward would had kicked 6 to 12 goals last night. He won't back it up next week.

Hahaha:thumbsu: This is truly one of the funniest things I have ever read on BF

So I guess every week a small will kick 6-12 against them. Unless of course St Kilda played a super-dooper secret defensive game style reserved for Hawthorn in order to make Rioli look good?

Your understanding of the game is very low...

And not a single positive contribution.

Who woulda thunk it?

I would have thought last night just confirmed it. Rioli is at his best at a stay at home small forward, and doesn't have the capacity to do with Bennell did.

Just out of interest, if Cyril is just average, then who are the best small forwards? Assuming there are 2 small forwards per team, then that would mean there would be at least 10 who are better than him, to make him just average. Can you name them please?
