Again, missing the point, we always ALWAYS have hurdles going into the game, usually MORE SO than the opposition.

When ARE WE going to have better luck than the opposition? Which is rarer than our flags.

Then why bother? Is this something so can comfort yourself when we lose them? Don't you get tired of losing GFs'?

For mine, I've witnessed 9 losses 2 wins and 2 draws. Even Saints fans have less pain than that. So I've learnt steely resolve.

Better than 'meh we'll probably lose, oh well'
Each person follows the club in their own way. There are no answers to the questions you pose.

We will either win or lose.

F U footy gods.

Payne likely available to play

Weather likely to be 29 deg - suits bris

Meanwhile, ruled out for us is an in form McStay and and in form Tay.

I think we can cover them and will probably win.

Not the point.

Just for ONCE *N ONCE how about things go in OUR favour come GF week? Just once, surely not too much to ask!

Footy gods just * off, bunch of cnuts! *n Infuriating!!
we have depth and we are playing on our turf on our home ground....anything can happen also ..they could lose a player 5 minutes into the game ...or Thursday training even...will be brutal initially so who knows ..all the fringe players we still have available have all played their roles for us this year ..ginnivan and noble would be starters in nearly every other team ..we have a very good 24-25 ready to go

When the final siren sounds and weโ€™ve won sweet 16 we will have better luck ๐Ÿ™‚
Just to be clear, I am expecting us to win not 'hoping'

It just pisses me off, we have a whole year on top, the club operating at optimum and the way it should be since god knows when, then at the pointy end we lose two key players, the week before, and they have a full squad apart from Ashcroft. And the weather is warm instead of cold which would suit us more.

Oh and good luck in GF's and Collingwood are definitely mutually exclusive. Period.

Just having a rant about it.

What does that question refer to?

You took the bait mate. Itโ€™ll be some crap rumour heโ€™s heard.
Seriously does my head in when people try to create drama during a week like this.

Weโ€™ve got enough drama!

I think the Gold Coast game is what we look to. From that line up, these would be the changes.

Steele was out injured. He goes back to his wing.

WHE was on the wing, but he moves to half back instead of Noble (who I canโ€™t see fitting back in)

DeGoey was suspended so heโ€™s in for Adams.

Ginnivan the sub instead of Harvey Harrison.

This game saw Billy Frampton kick two goals. Granted the opposition wasnโ€™t great, but it was our best 4 quarter effort all year.

I think the inclusion of Steele to the wing, WHE to half back and DeGoey over Adams improve this Gold Coast game line up.

Excellent!
Now, how do we arrange to play Gold Coast instead of Brisbane on Saturday?

We've had multiple injuries this year, at least 1 a week. Illness affecting every 2nd player which seemed to go on for weeks. A couple of suspensions.

Yet we remained on top of the ladder and are in the GF.

We play a system. We have plenty of role players. We've been talked up, talked down, trashed, laughable umpiring decisions, used as an excuse for other club's finals derailment ๐Ÿ™„ the subject of an AFL conspiracy..

But we're there. And what we know about this group is they will leave absolutely everything out there and not use any excuses.

Go Pies.

Updated weather forecast is for 27 with strong winds. Definitely favours us given we played 24 hours earlier in cooler temp. Brisbane need to travel. Brave of Adams to rule himself out. A selfless act like Presti. Gin to come in with Noble as sub. Pies by 19

I can't remember any bad luck heading into 2011 or 2018. Apart from mick malthouse self inflicted drama.

A key player for geelong literally got injured in the game. And 2018 we had a 30 point head start. I would say they are both lucky things. It's just we didn't take advantage of the luck. In 2010 we were super lucky with that ball bounce.

I've attended the last 2 aleague grand finals which were both losses for me, couldn't go to the win because of covid. I have just seen winning the whole thing as a bonus. If I can only find joy in a sport when I'm winning a flag it means I'm miserable 99% of the time.

I've only seen 1 flag win, and I was in Europe at the time so couldn't even enjoy it.

My point is most teams have some kind of bad luck going into games.

If we lose, it's not going to be because of bad luck. We are playing at our home ground on a clear day. If we can't replace 2 players then we are most likely the weaker team and aren't likely to win anyway.

Thereโ€™s an uncertainty that people experience when they have suffered from gaslighting. You can see reality, clear as day in front of you. And then thereโ€™s someone, almost always in a position of power above you, telling you it just isnโ€™t so. White is black, up is down, Maynard didnโ€™t get blocked in the 2018 Grand Final, and Darcy Moore wasnโ€™t pushed in the back in last yearโ€™s prelim.

Uncertainty lingers and returns when you're back in similar conditions:

The truth is, with each week, Iโ€™ve become less certain the footy results โ€“ itโ€™s the trauma of my memories as a really little kid around 1980, the loss in 2002 by a whisker when Chris Tarrant was monstered in that last quarter and received no frees! Then 2003 as the year we were โ€œmeantโ€ to win it against the Lions. It was our time. We were a better team than the one that lost the year before by a whisker โ€“ instead we were flogged in a one-sided affair. Let's not mention recent years.

Of course, there was 1990 and 2010, when justice was done as counterweights.

So Iโ€™m split between the black and white sides of my Magpie Heart:

The Black Side: Weโ€™ve been the best team over the year. Thereโ€™s no reason we canโ€™t take another step back to our best. The Lions are playing in Melbourne. Itโ€™s our home ground. Weโ€™ve had an extra day to recover.

The White Side: McStay has been everything weโ€™ve asked in the last couple of months and now heโ€™s gone. Weโ€™re a touch slow. Our best form is still elusive. Weโ€™ve become a bit like Melbourne really: sloggers.

Since we donโ€™t know about selection, weโ€™ll have to make some guesses:

Brisbane are an attacking behemoth. There are dangers everywhere. Their forward line is stacked. They move the ball with lightning speed. Mobility is their watchword. Darcy Moore can go with either Daniher or Hipwood, but Murphy and Howe are undersized. Murphy might not quite have the speed to match them either. So, unless Frampton comes in, weโ€™ll be relying on team defence and midfield pressure. Iโ€™d say Quaynor takes Charlie Cameron, since he has the pace and one-on-one skill.

The battle of the midfields will be something to behold. DeGoey has always been an elite finals performer and damn did he prove it in the Prelim. Thereโ€™s no one who can match it with him when he plays like that. Dunkley wonโ€™t have the speed. Nick Daicos will probably spend a lot of time in the centre, and he gives us the elite touch. Pendles the experience. Mitchell the hardness, even if heโ€™s a touch slow. Brisbane have a good spread too and itโ€™ll be a brilliant thing to watch. A lot will come down to the ruck battle, and this might be a problem. Cox is our best ruck now, but he might need to play McStayโ€™s role in the forward line. That gives me concerns both forward and with Cameron against the Big O in the ruck.

Because our forward line hasnโ€™t exactly been firing. Admittedly, thatโ€™s because weโ€™ve had to change our game plan as other teams flooded the centre corridor to stop our run. So we use the wings more and are slower. And that means we score less. The fate of Jamie Elliot in recent games is evidence enough for that. The slow transition and long kick into the forward line for a marking target requires someone to play McStayโ€™s role.

Otherwise we need to go small and fast and try to recapture our early season form and style. Remember that for the first half of the year we were missing our rucks AND McStay. Does this suggest we should go smaller, bring in Ginnivan or Noble or Adams (the last unlikely) and try to bring back the breakneck pace? Is it too much to ask at this point in the season? A smaller forward line risks letting the Brisbane interceptors โ€“ Andrews particularly โ€“ to take control. But a taller structure encourages the slowness.

Everyone in the footy world has been debating bits of all this already and itโ€™ll go on all week. I donโ€™t really think thereโ€™s much new I have to offer.

For my part, Iโ€™d bring in Ginnivan to the starting team and play Noble as the sub. Iโ€™d rely on Mihocek and the resting ruckman to play key forwards and Elliot to play his typical โ€œsmall full forwardโ€ role. But there are arguments for going every way.

Since thereโ€™s not much original for me to say, Iโ€™ll leave it there and say:

The Washup

The Pies to alleviate my trauma (which isn't really trauma, let's face it) with a tight win, by 9 points, and to redress at least some of the balance from 2002 and 2003. And for the Magpie fanatics, not least here on Bogfooty, to get some just desserts. We all deserve it.

And one final thing: Thatโ€™s it from me folks. A full year of previews. I hope Iโ€™ve given some value, cracked a few jokes, made it entertaining as well as thoughtful. Iโ€™m now retiring from the job โ€“ so thatโ€™s all from Finnishpie in this capacity. Fly well my Magpie brethren!

Great stuff finn with the weekly previews it took me back to the days of Mattys123 but with a bit more humour

My head along with all logic says we should win

Problem is, weโ€™re Collingwood. Weโ€™re a club who is literally famous for losing Grand Finals. Especially the ones we โ€œshouldโ€ win.

Itโ€™s essentially impossible to be realistically confident.

But thus far, all the more recent/relevant omens are with us.

I also used my mug this week so should be under control.

Iโ€™m at 2-4-1 in my time. No good getting down about history, or weighing on the boys with our anxiety. Only a few things you can do about it.

1. (Recommended). Cheer as loud as possible if youโ€™re lucky enough to get to the game. Maybe thatโ€™ll lift us.

2. (Not recommended) Jump the fence. Again, if youโ€™re lucky enough to get to the game.

3. (For the love of God, no). If you canโ€™t get to the game, well, it involves fire crackers, and hotel false alarms, and prank calls throughout the night, and whoops, Iโ€™ve said too muchโ€ฆ.

Donโ€™t do 2 or 3 please. We want to win, even if itโ€™s stacked against us, again!

Have faith brother, Fly and the boys have given us much to smile about, letโ€™s repay them with as good as we can possibly do - loud support and positive vibes!

End of the day footy is just entertainment. If we win fantastic. If we lose life goes on and weโ€™ll go around again next season. As much as wining flags are important, the journey is just as enjoyable. Personally I actually found my enjoyment of footy diminished a bit after the 2010 flag! Donโ€™t let it get you too down. Regardless of what happens at least we are not St Kilda lol

Can see Frampton coming in for McStay but for sure would take a punt on Noble. Heโ€™d play out of his skin. His hunger for the ball would be unstoppable IMO but the only one I could think of to come out for him is Lippa.

Brisbane would try and get Cameron or Bailey on him and they will turn him inside out all night

Ability to cover the ground on a hot day will be a huge factor.

I could see Noble as the sub with Ginnivan missing.

Hot day and Noble with fresh legs through the middle (not back) could help break lines.

um..we finished on top of the ladder ..more wins than anyone else..we lost mcstay for 10 weeks..daicos for 4..moore for 3..we had no ruckman for weeks mihocek missed a chunk with a hamstring ...plus others have regularly missed and our depth has consistently covered theses losses ..weve got two players unavailable ..our depth will cover again its not a complete catastrophe
