It is clearly the latter (an attempt to have the report come out after the Brownlow & GF).
More a case of the AFL trying to PR manage it to reduce the damage than deal with it openly - but they got flushed out.

What a horrific read! Clarko and Fagan should never head a club again. What about Norths now, and their indigenous lads? They would be aghast at reading that. This is 100% worse than the pies.
With Kennett at the helm, why am I not surprised.

Gee, imagine if Brisbane had made the GF.
I wonder if the same heartless treatment has been served to other non-indigenous players who came from rough upbringings.
It reads like something you would've heard about clubs doing to the players from up north in like the 70's or something...then you realise it only happened in the last decade and your brain melts
I also hadn't realised that Bateman was the first indigenous player at the Hawks since the 60s. Can't believe that sort of crap was still happening in my lifetime.

Kind of funny though because just a few weeks back I seen so many North supporters brag about getting Clarko. They were all out of the woodworks dreaming of premierships and trolling Essendon about being a rabble. Footys a weird game. You can never truely feel comfortable at anytime can you. North will have to go after Ross Lyon now if Clarkos gone
I didn’t realise that. Hawthorn’s adjacent suburbs to the south and east are basically the Dalkeith/Claremont of Melbourne from a socioeconomic perspective, so it’s not entirely surprising. But you don’t necessarily associate the club with toffs like you do with the Dees
