'Good bloke' is the antithesis of these allegations. I imagine the AFL and wider media will want to wash their hands of them if even one of these allegations is true, which looks very likely.

I thought the same of James Hird a few years ago, that he would be run out of the game. And yet, he may very well end up coaching again as soon as next year

I just wouldn't put it past the AFL to try and doctor the fallout to this as much as possible to try and preserve the reputations of all involved parties

Fair enough. The full investigation will undoubtedly take a while - so good luck being a Hawthorn, North and Brisbane supporter during this off season.

I don't think I am exaggerating when I say this is the most disturbing thing to rock the AFL in modern times. Us, Adelaide, Essendon and Collingwood have nothing on this - I still find it difficult to believe, but I do know the ABC and Russell Jackson would not have run this article unless they were certain they would not get sued to oblivion for making it public.

Something here smells of Hawthorn not being entirely honest and transparent here in conducting this report, to put it mildly.

While there are plenty of unproven allegations, let’s put them aside for the time being and look at the FACTS:

• Clarko has a great standing in the game, very good reputation and is widely respected.
• Very similar things can be said of Fagan
• Both coaches have great relationships with a number of indigenous players, including those who joined from other clubs and haven’t said one bad thing about either coach. Won’t bother listing names here
• Some of these players are seriously considering coming to North just to be reunited with former coach
• Hawthorn’s president has been well documented for having issues with dealing with indigenous players with Rioli case being a recent public example of this. Yet not one comment today has mentioned Kennett as part of the problem, in fact it’s been said the club is now a great place for indigenous players, despite Kennett still being there and Rioli refusing to come back to the club
• add to that the somewhat weird timing of this report, something tells me it’s not 100% full of integrity, once again to put it mildly.

But some people don’t like to look at the facts, instead preferring to jump out of their pants with righteous and presumptuous comments

Not saying that this is what happened but conceptually not impossible.

Young man goes to the Club and tells them that he really wants to make a go of footy but his folks keep on at him about stuff, his lady told him she was pregnant and is pushing him to spend more time there, my mates are always on at me to out clubbing with them etc and what can I do?

Club goes through options eg

• If they won't stop calling you you can change the SIM card so they can't call whenever they like.
• If you are having issues with mates you could move to a different suburb and even in with other team mates or temporarily with one of the assistant coaches
• do you want the baby ... if you don't then abortion is an option or if you don't but she does then you can split up etc

Young man goes home / calls his lady and absolves himself of all responsibility (and the attendant arguments) by saying that the Club made him do it. Dropping some names of authority figures into the conversation to indicate just how little choice he had (you can argue with the Welfare guy but not the Coach etc)

Over repeated repetitions and doubling down on the initial lie the memory slowly changes to the point where the player really believes that the previously seen as helpful club is now truly in his mind a manipulative driver of inhuman professionalism.

If later you get back together with the lady you are even less likely to confess to your part and it solidifies even further.

When a reporter asks you the lady tells the total truth as she knows it and he is trapped by his own initial approach and may even be a candidate for the Seinfeld 'it's not a lie if you believe it' gif.

Fast forward to Fagan saying he was devastated and blindsided by the allegations and he has told he has no knowledge of the meetings ... which could even be true.



That being said we know something of the characters of Fagan and Clarkson but we are not given the names of the accusers so we can't make any judgements on theirs ...

I wonder which club this guy supports too...

The Brisbane Lions are aware Senior Coach Chris Fagan will work with the AFL on an investigation into allegations concerning historical events at the Hawthorn Football Club, where he was a former employee.

Chris supports and welcomes the investigation.

He was not consulted during the Hawthorn sponsored review and looks forward to the opportunity to be heard as part of the AFL investigation.

The Brisbane Lions and Chris have mutually agreed that he will take a leave of absence from the Club so he can fully cooperate in the investigation.

As the matters are now with the AFL Integrity Unit, the Brisbane Lions won't make any further comment at this stage.

The allegations are very serious but it has to be borne in mind that they are only one side of the story.

So important this gets investigated thoroughly

Years ago a guy I knew a guy who was 16 or so at the time and an amazing footballer. He was on the radar of a non Vic new start up side about to join the AFL. He was months away from the new club selecting their squad which he was being told he had a great chance of making. He got a girl pregnant and the club washed their hands of him and told him it was all to messy for them to deal with.

One of the sadder element of this story has been the speculation in regards to the timing.

Half the population thinks this was timed by the writers to screw the AFL/Fagan/North/Clarko

The other half think it was plotted by those parties to be buried by Grand Final news/saved to let Brisbane finish the season.

The timing shouldn't be the concern, far more pressing is the actual content.

She is a Hawks supporter, did the interview with Chick earlier in the season months earlier and then chose to drop the article a few days before the Grand Final.

Chick himself confirmed that.

Either they’re flat out lying which would be unlikely or there’s some broader context/misunderstanding of the intentions behind the actions. It’s going to take some sort of explaining to justify though - hard to comprehend how telling a young lady to get an abortion and separating her from the father is an acceptable course of action

I think as a club we need to consider and review our indigenous support. Not saying we've done anything wrong, but it's a reminder that these things are incredible important and sensitive and we should review on a regular basis. We should want to ensure we have the highest standards in the league.

I was thinking about this when Junior decided to fly the coop. My thoughts immediately went to Liam Ryan and how good a mates he's been with Junior and how would he cope with one less around. I think more indigenous welfare support can only be a good thing for players and club.

Timing is on the AFL/Hawthorn

Report was made available to them 2 weeks ago and they’ve sat on it until today after a journo has got his hands on it and reported the story

I’ve no doubt Jackson has run the story as soon as he could because it isn’t something you’d sit on

The AFL not wanting it to see the light of day during finals however …..

They’ll also be investigating who leaked it although they won’t be saying that

Collingwood = shame of the AFL
Cerci Lannister = shame of the AFL
Hawks = shame of the AFL

This is not cheapen the revulsion garnered by the allegations against the Hawks.

But it does mean the previous hyperbole leaves a number of football people with no where to go.
