Okay, so here is where I land tonight:

1. The US is dead to me. As someone who has been there over 30 times, mostly professionally I don’t think I can do it anymore.

I’ve heard a few say this, including a couple of people who lived there for a decade or two. It’s an understandable expression of despair - like many of us are saying if we get badly raided again this offseason we’re just walking away from the AFLW.

But even if the USA is pretty fkd ATM, I don’t think it’s permanent. The cycle will move on. It may take a while to recover of course, longer than it takes to simply replace the Trump regime.

There's been a lot in this thread about how both sides are the same, so was interested to see Harris and Biden have spoken about a smooth transition and have urged voters to accept the choice the country made.

I don't know the future, but I do know no new military conflicts started during his last term. I'm hoping that continues and that global tensions simmer down and conflicts are settled quickly.

He supports Israel, so things won’t improve for the Palestinians, but then it can hardly get any worse, the settlers will move into Gaza quicker under Trump, but the Dems only waved a limp lettuce leaf in protest to Israel anyway. He will probably pull out of the UN, and no longer fund them, so other countries are just going to have to step up, but America is a handbrake anyway.

Ukraine, will be forced to give up some of the disputed land, but that conflict will continue to simmer for decades.

Apart from his stated position on migrants, and healthcare, My concern is the environment, he has said he is going to defund the EPA, which has much stronger powers than our own over here, and the national parks are under threat, trophy hunting and other activities will ramp up, along with drilling.

When I look at the way Trump has taken control, constantly talking down the institutions to instil mistrust, calling out any criticism as fake news, using division and fear as a way to build his base, it really is a blueprint for oligarchy.

Shocking outcome for Australia and the Western World. And I think long term America.

I believe this will be the end of an era for the American Government being leaders of the free world.

If tariffs are universally applied I expect Europe and APAC will start cozying up to China.

Even Americas partners in the Middle East would be unsettled. ‘Drill baby drill’ will stunt growth in Saudi and the UAE. They could be pushed into submission to cut unfavourable deals with Western Enemies to keep there economy’s growing (And they will - America is just beneficial to them at the moment).

I also expect we will see the end of Taiwan and Hong Kong (Hong Kong was already on its way). The South China Sea will also be controlled by China. Strategically I think they will be unstoppable in Asia and globally.

Without America stepping up they will have minimal road blocks to owning an abundance of assets in Africa, Central America, South America, Pacific and APAC. America simply won’t have leverage over countries preventing them from making deals with China if they do not act as protector for the world.

Trumps position on Ukraine will fuel this, and none of the allied partners will be brave enough to do anything without the back of the United States.

I’m fascinated to see what will happen with the manufacturing industry fuelled by tariffs and mass deportation.

I don’t see in any world how mass deportation is possible. Will cost a Trillion dollars to their growing debt and will take far more than 4 years. Suspect this will be as successful as the 35% of wall trump built last time. If it was successfully implemented there would be karma for a few Americans that lose their house cleaners, gardeners and handy man or have to pay proper salaries (suspect they may be to naive to realise).

Amazing the Americans would rather have an ongoing Trump soap opera than have some normality. Just wish trump had of got beaten in the republican primary. There must be some better options out there.

Anyway I hope I’m wrong and the world is a better place. This is also the last time I’ll ever post about politics !

It’s probably best for most of you to zone out the next 4 years politically.

Does anyone was thoughts on the likelihood of AUKUS subs succeeding now? Obviously we are along way down the list of getting the Virginia Class (intermediary) sub, even more so now under an isolationist partner. But there is a conceivable chance this whole Nuclear Sub bipartisan plan is thrown in the bin with the entire world order being scrambled by Trump. At least for the next 4 years.

One final thing, in the last 4 years there has been a crackdown on Chinese company investment in Australia.

For instance there was a Chinese company that tried to bail out Probuild before they went belly up. They were not permitted to purchase Probuild as government prevented it as the nature of some of the Probuild portfolio was security sensitive.

The only reason the government has stopped the sale of companies to China is America. I doubt there is much getting in the way of stopping these transactions in future.

I expect Americas influence on the world to diminish greatly. All the scare mongering from trump about democrats being communists will probably see communist China become the most powerful and influential country in the world. The irony!
