Priority picks for Carlton 2019. SOS gone and replaced by wells, Walls gone and replaced by a statue, Caracella coach.

Looks very dumb now that they had the opportunity to do so last year with the pre-draft picks and didn't take it, whereas the Suns got three solid players in their early to mid 20s.

Gold Coast aren’t exactly flying either. If McGovern was standing on the line for that Bowes last minute snap they’d be bottom.

Speaking of McGovern, a guy in his mid 20s, the priority pick helped select him.

Gold coast's list has been pillaged, lost both captains and numerous star players.

By your logic though had they not been unlucky in a couple games GC could be 6 wins

No doubt. No one expected the Suns to be good this year and they’ve probably been better than I expected. They’re not exactly flying though.

In any case Gold Coast used their three picks on state level players with some success. Corbett and Collins look like long term players, Burgess needs more time. They all fill the age profile they need. Carlton used their two picks to help get McGovern and Setterfield, who look like long term players and fill the age profile they need.

Too little too late from Carlton. Next year they shouldn't draft a single player. They have **** loads of young talent everywhere. They should be floating every single pick they have for senior experience.

Go and put 700k a year on the table for Sier. Blokes like Rockliff should have been their number 1 priority

Why is Gibbs leaving, a reason for a priority pick ? They got two first rounders for someone who’s been playing sanfl footy.. They need a Wells, Rendell or Ogilvie not sos

Not that I agree with priority picks in general but if we don’t get one this year who will ever qualify for one?

Likely by year end that we will have won no more than 6 of 54 matches, be tough to get much worse than that.

Also people will say our situation is self inflicted, but aren’t all clubs in this situation in it because of mismanagement, or are some just bad for an extended period because of bad luck?

Are they entitled to one based on precedence afforded to Brisbane a few years ago?

Yes.

Will they get one?

Gerard Whately: Manifestly inadequately absolutely outrageously mutinously no.

Rockliff was their number on priority, he just chose Port. They also went hard at Shiel last year.

The reason they suck is because they missed almost every draft pick from the 2008-2012. The guys that should be between 25-29 and in the peak of their careers and not one of them is on the Carlton list. In this time they drafted Chris Yarran, Kane Lucas, Matthew Watson, Josh Bootsma and Troy Menzel with high selections, and a bunch of nobodies except Mitch Robinson with the 13 other selections.

And for too little too late. In 2013 they picked up Everitt and Thomas; 2014 Jones, Whiley, Jaksch and Boekhorst; 2015 Kerridge, Phillips, Lamb, Plowman, Sumner, Gorringe and Wright; 2016 Palmer and Smedts; 2017 Lang, Lobbe, Mullett, O’Shea and Shaw; 2018 McGovern, Newman, Fasolo and Gibbons. They’ve been targeting that age group for a long, long time now but their recruiting just sucks and they’ve picked up the wrong ones.

At least now they do have some younger talent in unlike the previous 5 years. Sure they should trade for experience if it’s the right guy like Rockliff would’ve been or Shiel would’ve been, but if you’re going hard at guys who aren’t best 22 at their current club there is a good chance they won’t be best 22 at your club. There are some successful ones no doubt and Sier could be that, but how many of that list that Carlton have recruited have we been told ‘if they weren’t at GWS/other club they’d be playing every week’.

This hadn't really crossed my mind this year, given the AFL's stance on it last year but I've seen it bandied around a few times by Carlton supporters lately.

It's no secret that Carlton have had a horrid run lately. Docherty and Kreuzer have been perpetually injured. One of their most consistent players over the past decade, Gibbs, needed to move back home for family reasons.

Are we likely to see a priority pick given to Carlton?

Personally, I'm unsure. I think they'd have definitely been eligible if they hadn't traded away what is potentially pick one but I can see why it'd be a bad look after that.
Give it to them so they can take Rowell before the Crows

Gold Coast are going miles better than last year despite having lost several veterans and both co-captains. Don't forget people were claiming, reasonably confidently, that they may go winless all year because of their sheer lack of talent, and they're two wins ahead of Carlton.

And Carlton had two selections, trading the other for pick 43, which they used as steak knives in a trade for a 20 year old with two games of experience. Opportunity gone begging to grab a seasoned veteran.

There is more likelihood that we'd trade Dangerfield than letting Wells go. Firmly believe he'll die in his role before we select someone else, haha

Point in case re. Wells...Got us Nathan Kreuger for that pick - a kid that was mentored by McLeod and was rated as the second best tall in SA behind Lukosius. Kicked 6 in the VFL the other week. Never change Wells, and never change Carlton

Anyone in their right mind had Gold Coast and Carlton finishing bottom two. Gold Coast are doing better than I expected, Carlton a little worse.

Gold Coast had three picks and brought in a 24 year old and two 23 year olds. Carlton had two picks and used them with change to pick up a 24 year old and a 21 year old. I don’t really see the difference between what the two teams did with their picks. Gold Coast just got their talent from state league teams while Carlton added already AFL listed players. It’s not like they took it to the draft and picked up 18 year olds that were three years away from doing anything.

Also people will say our situation is self inflicted, but aren’t all clubs in this situation in it because of mismanagement, or are some just bad for an extended period because of bad luck?

Both. And some are bad partly due to inherent disadvantages like being in a non-traditional football state.

Carlton used their two picks to help get McGovern and Setterfield, who look like long term players and fill the age profile they need.

McGovern yes, but Setterfield was a 20 year old with two AFL games under his belt when he was acquired. He's certainly talented so I don't hate the move, I just think they should have acquired a seasoned veteran in addition, since Setterfield wasn't going to help them on that front.

Not only was Setterfield 20, he also had a serious gap in experience due to the ACL injury. All three players Gold Coast acquired had several seasons worth of experience across state leagues and the AFL.

To be fair this isn't the full story, Gold Coast picked up several other veterans through trades and delists too, my point is that Carlton have had similar opportunities, and they haven't shown that they'll use a priority pick to fix the issue.

He was 21 at the start of the season. I thought he was ready to contribute straight away but he hasn’t looked quite ready and maybe he is 12 months away from really showing his stuff.

I think they have tried to add a lot of experience, they’ve also added a 24 year old and a 23 year old from the state league, Gibbons and Deluca, through other methods. I went through a list above from who they’ve picked up since 2013 to try and add experience. They all just suck haha. It’s not like they’ve gone to “trust the process” 76ers mode of going to draft after draft, they’ve tried to add older players but their recruiting has been trash.
