I have high hopes for Teague Wyllie, but geez, he was struggling in the Shield, you don’t throw him to the wolves.

100% but Khawaja is around for at least another 2 if not 3 years, that's another 25 shield games for Wyllie (sorry my spelling is terrible). Honestly if they don't go Bancroft this time, what's the point in 3 years, we know he'll be a 30 average opener at best.

Not horrible but they won't do it. You aren't moving your most in form bat in Head, just open with Green.

I have a HUGE problem if Bancroft is the one post Khawja, he is okay but he's only ever going to be Harris with the bat who can actually field that's it. He's a 30 average opener at the next level.

I'd be hoping Pucovski plays a year or two unaffected and then bring him back in, he's just one too, Ward from Tassie, Hunt from SA. Both for me have a higher ceiling at least, both need a stack more runs but there's time. Teague Wilie is the wildcard might be a bit early, but he should be in the mix.

Why are we taking Boland to the Windies anyway, and we sure as anything don't need Neser there. You do need that spinner agree. Feel they take a bat who can bat in the middle order as the spare not an opener.
Does Jake Fraser-McGurk have any ambition to play test cricket?

Has a so far unimpressive record at Sheffield Shield but made a century almost a a run a ball last match he played.

Wonder if he should be in the conversation as a futute prospect.

Doesn’t have the record he’s at best a t20 or ODI cricketer and that’s fine. He's a good aggressive slogging bat.

Werent the boundaries 40m ish.

Karen Rolton isnt a huge oval.
I reckon even I as a stodgy 9th grade opener could get it to the boundary there

I get the feeling that attitude might be a problem for him. It's not like he wasn't talented enough to win a spot on the Vic team and his transfer here at such a young age suggests that that might not have been the main problem.

Attitude doesnt help but if hes talented enough he will make it (see D.Warner)

At what point are selectors duty bound to start thinking to the future and blooding 1 or 2 younger players. This is a dead rubber after all
No dead rubbers when the World Test Championship is in play. Australia needs to be winning these games given the over rate point deductions from the Ashes.

Nah WA need to take a step back with Wylie. They threm him to the wolves having him come in at 3 when alot of 18 years old bat bit lower down the order. He needs to bat 5 and WA need to give Cartwright and Hardie the responsibility. Especially Hardie is he wants to be a future test player.

More I think about it, the more I am keen for Head to open post-Warner. Makes sense in two ways, both retaining a dashing left handed opener (albeit Warner eased off in this recently) and also allows Green, who is most definitely the best batter not in the team, to slot in at five.

There are a couple of issues which I understand. Bancroft has been banging the door down and is a specialist opener. I would be very keen to include Bancroft in the squad as the reserve batter, with an eye to taking over from Usman when that time comes. I just think for the time being, Green is a much superior batter, and with the addition of his bowling, will be much more valuable to the XI than Bancroft would be.

I would also be hesitant to move Head, as it has taken time to finally get him settled into the team and find some real form. He has opened in white ball and also in India however, so I don’t view it as much of a drastic step as some others might do. With a new ball coming onto the bat, he could be a real weapon at the top of the order.

Leaves us with the following for West Indies and then New Zealand tour, plus a home series against India, after which I feel we may see some further retirements.

Khawaja
Head
Labuschagne
Smith
Green
Marsh
Carey
Starc
Cummins
Lyon
Hazlewood

Bancroft
Boland
+ Morris, Neser, Murphy, Inglis as required
If you take Bancroft as reserve player, you might as leave Inglis home to play shield. Bancroft can keep and for a bloke thats not a full time keeper, he is bloody good keeper

Surely you would look at Maxwell for NZ and most likely there for the white ball cricket any way.

He does have ambitions to play test cricket and is only young.Perhaps he is the wild card selection for NZ.

i know khawaja had a great year in 2023, but father time can catch up quickly.

i wouldn't be surprised if khawaja only has 4 tests left in him.

he may well have ambitions to play another 2 aussie summers and may well get there if no one is banging down the door.

If there's a middle order bolter selected soon (even for squad experience) it'll be Ollie Davies. The guy makes batting look ridiculously easy, even on tricky surfaces. Has a nice uncomplicated technique that will serve him well in red ball cricket

He’s one of the rare players that doesn’t play too many other games bar the tests. Gives him more chance to get another year or so

Please don’t. Needs this whole shield season AT LEAST

Not necessarily, some players are genuinely more comfortable up the order and benefit from getting “thrown to the wolves”, I actually think Green fits this category and would like to see him at 3 or 4 if the opportunity presents.
