Very gutsy effort by the boys tonight, but it brought up the same sinking feelings I had from last year’s SF. I felt sick watching towards the end, and this was only a H&A game and with virtually nothing on the line. I think Craig’s reaction said it all, this meant a lot to the club given the week they had. Lost 3 first choice players from last week including 2 B&F winners from the past few years, and yet we hung in there all night and really should’ve won the game.

Pressure was outstanding, intensity and tackling top notch. Makes you wonder what we were doing in the Port and Richmond games were destroyed any hopes we had of making the finals. The midfield group were exceptional, not sure of the numbers but it felt like we controlled most of the centre bounces and Reilly, Thompson and co won a stack of the ball in the middle. Best players tonight were Johncock and Thompson; both absolutely sensational, and Stevens and Schmidt also had great games in defence. Then of course there’s Will Young, second game, plays one of the tightest defensive roles I’ve seen, giving O’Brien nothing. Hope there’s nothing wrong with his shoulder, would love to see him against a Gilbert or Fisher next week if we’re going to play him in a similar role.

Player review:

Johncock: Let’s be honest, he should be All-Australian. Best small defender in the competition, probably his rival for the AA BP Heath Shaw played tonight I think...? Was AMAZING.

Thompson: B&F. Absolute champion, what a player he is, and the fact that he’s re-signed might prompt me to get #5 on my back. 29 possessions, most of which were tough in and under touches and his work around the stoppages was enormous.

Stevens: Credit where credit’s due, was excellent tonight taking a number of excellent contested marks due to his superior football smarts. Also saved a couple of marks due to being on the goal line, didn’t a poster call for someone to play that role when the ball was deep in the opponents attack? Got your wish tonight, I think Stevo saved 2 or even 3 goals.

Rutten: Excellent game, nice rebound after last week in what was probably his worst performance of the year.

van Berlo: Overall a decent game but faded after a very promising start, maybe a bit fatigued after his huge output last week in the Brisbane heat.

Symes: Did some strong work, good use of the body and his ability to break the Collingwood tackles was a feature, BUT his disposal is ordinary at best. Errant handball cost a goal, and his kicks I50 are horrible for forwards.

Douglas: Another solid game bar that one kick in the second term which cost a goal. Some outstanding work at the centre bounces, seemed to win a lot of clearances. Probably took the mark of the night in the first quarter.

Sloane: Kid is quality, but needs to tidy up his kicking, had two standout kicks for all the wrong reasons and, like Symes, isn’t damaging enough when kicking I50. Enough of the negatives, I loved his game tonight, really stood up to the finals like pressure, his strength was a feature, and his competitiveness is amazing. Future leader.

Dangerfield: Going from bad to worse, his kicking is back to the days when he was first drafted and there were all these queries on his kicking, just horrific and I think he's lost all confidence in his kicking. Awful game.

Doughty: Overall another solid game but for mine he made some critical clangers when the game was in the balance, mainly poor skills by hand. At his age it’s not going to improve, so he is what he is, a reliable defender who happens to panic with the ball in his hands come crunch time.

Reilly: Super game, Swan had little to no influence while I thought Radar was another who excelled at the stoppages. Having a very good and consistent season is Reilly. :thumbsu:

Porplyzia: Not sure what to make of his game. Looked dangerous, took a good mark and did some useful things in the midfield, but missed some key shots on goal and went a bit missing towards the end.

Henderson: Didn’t get much of the ball, but I’m confident that in 2-3 years time he’s going to be a superstar. How about two of the grabs he took tonight; one high stretched mark in the second term and the other a beautiful grab over Maxwell in the third. Will be a gun.

Maric: A very good game, started off with a great running goal, and a couple of really strong overhead marks. Thought his ruckwork was pretty good too and gave our midfielders a good shot. Looks to be regaining some of his early season form, especially with his marking.

Schmidt: An error free game, as well as some excellent use of the ball. 14 touches, slightly down on his usual output, but had some slick handballs in close and by foot he was crisp. I’m still very confident that he can become a successful AFL player, if he can cut out the errors as he did tonight, he’s certainly got a future. Good game from Schmidt.

Walker: Ordinary game and should’ve kicked that gimme to start the 4th which could have been the sealer given the context of the game. Might just qualify for the Legs yet...

Davis: Inconspicuous, didn’t notice him much, but as a young key defender there’s nothing wrong with that. Only cheap stats but looked composed with ball in hand.

Mackay: A super handball early in the game to the running Schmidt which was totally awesome, but thereafter played probably his worst game of AFL footy. Being brutally honest, hasn’t progressed AT ALL in 2010.

Jaensch: Very good first half, looked lively and his use of the ball was outstanding. I think his fitness levels aren’t great due to missing a large chunk of the PS due to a knee injury. So while he needs to find more of the ball, his skills are sublime and needs to be persisted with. I liked his defensive pressure and had that nice late play on O’Brien to prevent him from rebounding the ball.

Tippett: Again, shut him down from taking his contested marks deep and he’s ineffective.

Young: Has only spent about 20 minutes of the past 2 years playing up forward for the Legs, and that was in his league debut. So I was shocked when I saw him line-up in attack, and doubly shocked to see him play a negating role on Harry O’Brien. He gave Harry nothing, stuck to his task all night and didn’t let him get any cheap possessions. Only had 2 touches, but kicked a goal and kept Harry to 5, he won on the night. Hurt his left shoulder in that ripping tackle on Beams, hopefully it’s nothing serious, and hopefully the AFC don’t rule him out of the SANFL finals.

Sellar: How much game time did he have? Didn’t seem like much, barely noticed him at all. Disappointed that he didn’t get a run in the forward line given his last quarter form last week combined with Tippett’s inability to get into the game.

Tippett: Again, shut him down from taking his contested marks deep and he’s ineffective.

They did this well -we needed help.
Id like to have seen our loose man in defence up there at times when we needed another number.

Fantastic efoort though.
Not to mant sides have been in front at quarter time over this mob.
Our intense pressure when we didnt have the ball was brilliant.

Will Young is built like a Sherman shithouse:D and will be a another great player.

Totally Agree with:
Stevens
Stiffy
Sloane

You woulda thought with a broken hand, Danger would use more of his kick with better effect, but he's still happy to handball in and under which I think we still lack in the team lacks. People should get off Walker's back. His chasing in the F50 was pretty good for what I saw on TV.

Young was a stand out for me. HOB has been dominated in the backline for the Magpies in recent weeks yet he was able to totally shut him down. I think his work really shaped the game as Collingwood's run was restricted without their movement from defence.

Reilly as a tagger looks his best position. Swan only had cheapie possessions and didn't have as much influence as usual. Too bad Thomas got off the hook (who was playing on him?) and Jolly really showed why he's a great ruckman tonight.

Would've been nice to have beaten Collingwood and won a close game for a change but in the context of the season it doesn't mean all that much. Collingwood would still be top 2 at least and we'd still miss the finals.

Close margin in the end but it probably doesn't reflect their dominance in the final quarter. Not sure what happened but it looked like they figured out how to shut us down completely and we lost the run that we had for much of the 1st half. Almost becoming like a broken record when we play them.

Pretty fair and decent summary on all accounts :thumbsu:

To add a bit:

Young...Wow! Great move by the coaching staff and he did not let them down at all. I rate Harry O, and Young gave him a bath. Biggest defensive forward I've ever seen :D

Maric - as I said in another thread, he had a good game but I was disappointed that after setting the tone early he didn't really go on with it. Dropped his intensity and Jolly finished well on top, where if Ivan kept it up I reckon he could've been the matchwinner.

Forward structure...****. Noble has to go, he's just got absolutely no idea how to work with the cattle he's got, and it's not as though its bad livestock either. Space!? Its the freakin MCG, work it out!!!

Dangerfield - love the guy, but I got this overwhelming feeling of not wanting to see him again until round one of the NAB cup next year

Mackay - see Dangerfield.

It may seem like the game was just a dead rubber match, but I thought there was quite a lot to play for. Just imagine... how much confidence a win over the minor premiers would give the young guys over the off-season. Quite alot of course. I'm dissapointed we didn't get the win but nethertheless, I'm proud that we managed to stay in the game for so long. I was expecting us to get blown out of the water so to lead for most of the game was quite pleasing.

Drummond - good review, but IMO too quick to highlight the negatives. For example, no doubt Dangerfield has been off for the last half of the season. But he's basically a second year player, and he has to go through that learning curve. Not saying the mistakes are not there, but you make too much of them. Lots of good happens as well, and the future upside once the education has happened is incredible.

The same is true of nearly all our team. The real question Crow supporters should be asking is "Can the Kiddy Crows outdo the Baby Bombers"?

I thought that Craigys tatics tonight were also very comendable

howmany times have we done something like that (Young on O'Brien)

is it a sign that things are changing in his coaching brain?
I hope so, he really outcoached MM tonight.

A very encouraging performance. It was a glimpse of what is to come, and this was against arguably the best team in the comp at the moment.

None of the former champions playing, and although we lost, I thought we controlled the game for the majority of time.

Forget Woods bad kicking, it was our good pressure, our owning the mid corridor and forcing them wide consistently.

So much for the predicted belting.

And I still wanna know when Tippett will ever get the frees he deserves nearly every time he goes near the ball.

And M Rucci you complete fool, was that the reality the pies would dish out to us in the midfield?? Even with no Knights and no Vince? I hope that's the reality, you condescending arse. How disappointing for you. Is that the clear picture of where we fall short for an AFL flag? is it? is it?...well i hope so.
Suck it up you loser. (end of vent)

Young on O'Brien was very much unlike Craigy! Great effort by the team tonight and the Stiffmeister tough as....must have eaten raw meat for lunch because he took no prisoners and didn't back away from anyone.

The game as whole is a typical game between the 2 clubs. We come out and play really well in the first half. Collingwood come out after half time and turn the game on its head and then pinch it in the end. The only difference is that they couldn't kick straight especially in the 3rd quarter. Their start to the 3 was very much like the final last year except they just couldn't convert to save themselves.

I liked Davis' game on Cloke. Cloke ended up having a few shots from defensive switches but in one on one contests I thought Davis more than held his own.

Walker had a stinker and I can understand why he would annoy the crap out of the coaching staff. That left foot snap was just a show pony stuff. He should have kicked with ease but trying to be fency and shit hits the fan.

I did like his contested work in some contests but he just does not work hard enought for long enough. All the talent in the world but needs to smarten up a bit. He reminds me of the basketball player on the break going for a breath taking dunk and missing rather than going for a lay up. Kid you have the talent, work hard and smarten up. There is time and place for pulling off fency shit but there is also time when high percentage kick is a better option. I still think he will become an absolute gun...eventually.

No doubt tomorrow morning he'll spend his time on how we "choked" and all that.

Positive, really positive, but so disappointing to stop completely, go back into our shell and lose again.

Still, given it was our youngest ever side, away to the top team on the ladder, it was a wonderful effort to be in the position we were, even if we did gaff it completely.

Thompson and Johncock were outstanding.

What everyone has said about Walker...

+

He really worked hard to put on forward pressure. That bit where he went from 1st to 2nd to 3rd PiesPossesion and then back to #1!

Yes, the pies cleared it. But the wall by then was +3, and turned the ball back for a score.

It is games like tonight which make me extremely proud to follow this footy club.:thumbsu: Absolute heart against the best side in the comp, could not have asked for anymore, except for a win... So so unlucky that Didak finally decided to do something in the last 5 minutes. We shut down nearly all of their playmakers tonight except Thomas. Swan, Didak, and even Pendlebury and Wellingham after half time had no impact. There wasn't one mention of our effort on the telecast or 5th Quarter tonight. Just quietly, Luke Darcy is the biggest knob in the media atm.

I agree entirely Stiffy. The "Walker Worship' threads on this board are worrying. This kid is the typical raw talent genius who simply does not consistently pull his weight and do the hard training yards - thats obvious - I've heard his training work rate is inconsistent and he relies on attitude and raw talent to get him through - and believe me as he gets older it won't - he is in danger of being a very brief shining light and then crashing and burning - never to be seen again if he doesn't learn some work ethic, team work and basic skills, particularly improving his decision-making.

I know I'll get shot down in flames for this - please read this post properly - I'm in his fan club - but if this fancy show-pony rubbish continues instead of teamwork, high work rates and percentage football - then I fear he is going to have a short career indeed.

A good effort but lets not get carried away it was very much a dead rubber for both teams.
I have to say I was very impressed with Schmidt's improvement, but at the same time unimpressed by Walker's lack of smarts.
Sloane was very good I love watching this guy and next season I can see him improving his strength and fitness and taking his performance to another level.
Davis was good at times against Cloke but this was always going to be a tough ask.

And did I here Wallsy paying tribute to the Crows for there performance considering the outs from our best 22?

Thansk Ron - and good luck for the finals - just don't underestimate any finals team or you'll get into trouble.:)

Bad luck tonight guys. Thought you were the better team for 3 1/2 quarters, and we were lucky to be in touch.

I think our experience helped in the end. At least you gave it a real big crack.

I think Taylor will repay the faith in the coming years..

here is a guy who has put on 15kg this year....
that's a massive effort in itself
the more games he can get the better he will be...

Chirs Schmidt welcome to the team....

the crowies, back to the team centered around the defensive
structure against geelong were great in the first 3qtrs
as the game wore on they went back into their shells
the playon of the first half dissappeared...

this is a coaching failure...they failed to inspire the guys to take'em on
and continue to believe in themselves...

all in all it's the first time a loss to collingwood has ever been
tolerable...well done all involved.

take St Kilda this week... a measured pre-season with all fit for
round one will have opposition teams on there toes in 2011.

go crows...
