Thoughts on the Collingwood Game

On the condition his attitude and work rate improves - he's playing more show pony stinkers than solid games of late IMO - and thats worrying... please don't get me wrong - I really like this kid and think he has the most incredible potential - but I think he is also at a tipping point - and thats really worrying as he could easily go both ways IMO...

I think Taylor will repay the faith in the coming years..

here is a guy who has put on 15kg this year....
that's a massive effort in itself
the more games he can get the better he will be...

Chirs Schmidt welcome to the team....

the crowies, back to the team centered around the defensive
structure against geelong were great in the first 3qtrs
as the game wore on they went back into their shells
the playon of the first half dissappeared...

this is a coaching failure...they failed to inspire the guys to take'em on
and continue to believe in themselves...

all in all it's the first time a loss to collingwood has ever been
tolerable...well done all involved.

take St Kilda this week... a measured pre-season with all fit for
round one will have opposition teams on there toes in 2011.

go crows...

i hear ya - just think he's young and dumb... still coping with
all the attention... the young girls would be quite a distraction
Dane Swan used to be lazy/inconsistent too...

Luke Darcy is the biggest knob in the media atm.

This! He's really revealed his true colours this season...

The whole Wallace cost a GF business was a crock. The guy is just way to big for his boots and neither his football ability nor his football knowledge allows him to be anywhere near the authority he thinks is!

He's just the kind of personality that would drive me bat shit crazy if I was on the same team... there's no grey area with him... just the right way or the wrong way, his way or the wrong way.

Just wasn't that good a player to last in the media caper the way hes going IMO.

It's like that book where they say the best way to annoy or alienate someone is to pretend you're actually not trying to annoy or alienate someone... this is his forte... except he just doesn't have the respect to get away with it.

There's gotta be a better standard of special comments out there. Matty Lloyd I definitely like though.

I thought that Craigys tatics tonight were also very comendable

howmany times have we done something like that (Young on O'Brien)

is it a sign that things are changing in his coaching brain?

No changing, he pulls those moves quite often.

Bock on Riewoldt at Etihad years ago when he couldn't break into the side.

Rutten on Hall at the SCG the year Ayres quit.

Both seemingly one-sided contests at the time that Craig backed his then no-name players in to win, like he did with Young tonight.

I agree entirely Stiffy. The "Walker Worship' threads on this board are worrying. This kid is the typical raw talent genius who simply does not consistently pull his weight and do the hard training yards - thats obvious - I've heard his training work rate is inconsistent and he relies on attitude and raw talent to get him through - and believe me as he gets older it won't - he is in danger of being a very brief shining light and then crashing and burning - never to be seen again if he doesn't learn some work ethic, team work and basic skills, particularly improving his decision-making.

I know I'll get shot down in flames for this - please read this post properly - I'm in his fan club - but if this fancy show-pony rubbish continues instead of teamwork, high work rates and percentage football - then I fear he is going to have a short career indeed.

Agree, I thought for a key forward in a team that was having trouble converting it's entries into the 50 that Taylor did not give enough tonight. Tippett was being double teamed for most of the night and Walker needed to step up but a number of his contests were just not good enough and he did not make the most of the easy opportunities presented to him, which would be forgivable if he wasn't beginning to make a habit of it.

I'm a big fan but I'm becoming worried that his effort and attitude are not improving, and seem to almost be going backwards. At some points tonight I was really filthy with his attack on the ball and effort in the contest, and he needs to narrow the gap between his best and his worst very quickly, because he will be in and out of the side until he does.

If he snapped that left foot goal it would've been a classic but yeah... he's still not commanding a spot and I reckon SMACK is a good chance for next weeks team just from a 2011 development perspective.

We're not that far off, we need a good pre season and to employ a more proactive selection policy. Ton of onus on the coaches going into 2011 to get the basics right; they didn't this year.

We were never going to beat Collingwood tonight. Them finding a way to scratch and claw their way over the line was a foregone conclusion. But I'm seeing the things that tell me we absolutely have the list to rebound strongly next year.

I agree that walker doesn’t work hard enough and needs to improve. But he doesn’t get as much delivery that tippett gets…..In saying that obviously his work rate is not up there to provide an option/contest on a consistent basis. Good effort tonight by the boys we do have an exciting future ahead! Go the crows!

Taylor is just one of those really really frustrating players. All the talent in the world but just doesn't seem to do the basics as well as others. His pressure and tackling/harassing was good I thought tonight but some of the gimmes ie. missed left foot snap in the last quarter/dropped marks etc. is really frustrating and costly. No doubt he's lazy and his intensity/work rate can be hit and miss. If you look at his stats, 30 goals for the year as a 20 year old is amazing but its the team things which he lacks. Needs to be more of an aerial presence and even when he can't mark the ball he needs to try to create a good solid contest and bring the ball down. He sometimes doesn't do this... Still, you'd mark his year down as a success as he's been given sufficient opportunity to perform and develop. Another pre-season hopefully will rectify some of his short comings. Needs to get fitter aerobically I think to keep up with the repeated efforts you need in todays game.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

I think Dangerfield's stuffed. He's only a kid, he plays his bloody heart out each and every week. I'd give him a rest for the final game and give Brodie another run.

Very gutsy effort, full props to the boys. Remember, we were at 9 dollars to win, so to come within 3 points is a fantastic effort.

I tell you cabt, he's going to want to have a great pre-season given the other talent snapping at his heels and the fact we are going to be trading for some real talent. I worry 'cos he seems to think his place in the team is assured, some sort of God-given right.

It ain't. And I hope for his sake his improvement is startling, consistent and rapid!

Seriously, WTF is Walker supposed to do? Tippett has another stinker and all I see is pissing and moaning about Walker not chasing, Walker not contesting, Walker not giving Craigy good feedback when he come to the bench blah blah blah.

With limited supply, he's managed one more goal than Tippett, one more tackle, three more contested possessions and four more overall possessions. In fact he's in the top 10 for contested possessions for the whole damn match, both sides (equal second for us).

PERSPECTIVE PEOPLE!!!

Yeah I thought Walker chased reasonably well tonight. The easy goal missed and the dropped mark were the standout negatives.

I think there are plenty of positive opinions of Tex around as well to balance it out.

Like I said earlier, Tippett was double teamed for most of the night. He's the number one forward and is going to get the best defender and most attention every game. The only way to stop teams doing that to him is for the other players in the forward line to stand up and make themselves dangerous, which Walker is perfect for when he can be bothered working himself into the game. When he can't, well I can see why the coaching staff get frustrated with him sometimes.

I sometimes worry that he is better suited to being the number one target inside 50 instead of the secondary forward to Tippett, and might produce more if he was on his own up there?

Only saw the last quarter which, by the sound of it, was the worst. Clearly, we played better in the first three but, man, I am so sick of seeing us play stop-and-prop football when the game is there to be won. Nothing is more sure, when we start those short possession-focused kicks, that a turnover is coming. And what the hell were our forwards doing when Porps had the ball on the fifty? No way he should have had to try for goal. Just move! So frustrating...

You were superb. We were terrible.
You guys should've won. We didn't deserve to win.

Just let me edit this for you.

"You played your youngest side ever ...with retirements and a shitload of first choice player injuries... We were forced to play the way we did because of the way you played. We didn't deserve to win because John Anthony has the head of an alien" :D:thumbsu:

There you go.

So u guys have beaten Geelong, ran the Dogs very close, nice win in Brissie and excellent again tonite.

Gr8 performance by an inexperienced and young team!

Thanks. Also beat Freo when they were flying. The only problem is the absolute crap we served up against Port and Richmond. We need to put in the same effort and intensity against the bottom sides as we have done against the top ones this year.

*sigh*

I said Walker had the hallmarks of a new Fev a while back. Was pilloried and abused at the time, funny people are now saying exactly the same things about Walker's attitude...
