Might still be the worst thread ever started on Big Footy

The Big Insignificant Tom Hawkins is now 5 Goals away from 700 Career Goals.

The way the man is playing he could play till he 40 and push 900 goals

He's actually 6 goals shy of 700..

He should have his sights set on 800 and on track for his fifth AA blazer. 750-800 goals and 5+ AAs is all-time great territory for a key forward, particularly in the modern era.

I think he probably has that.

This century obviously Buddy is a given as the best key forward, I think Tom while I would have him slightly behind Nick Riewoldt and MAYBE a fraction behind Pav, sits comfortably in that group behind buddy with Pav, Brown (he’s better than Brown), both Riewoldts and probably Kennedy

From 2006:

Just finished watching the replay. My thoughts:

Firstly, it's important to point out that Hawkins is 197cm and was playing on a guy who was 185cm tall. Now, that's not to say everything he did today wasn't super impressive - it was. But it will be important to see how he fares against the better CHBs and full backs going around.

Kicked 6.1 as someone pointed out. Missed two shots for memory - one hit the post and one didn't make the distance from just inside 50m. All set shots for memory, except his second which was a classy gather at his feet and snap over his shoulder. Looks to be a very nice kick for goal - a bit like Nathan Ablett. The only question mark is the penetration he gets on his kicks but this is an area that can improve with coaching and strengthening.

Took about 12-14 marks, mostly inside 50 on the lead but quite a few contested either leading up the ground or man-on-men closer to goal. He played mainly out of the goalsquare but lead up the ground a fair bit, especially in the first half.

Mobility for someone that size was superb. He reminds me of a cross between young versions of Jono Brown and Carey in the way he moves. Not super quick but he will definitely trouble opponents of similar size - he troubled his 6'1" opponent today for mobility - beating him on the lead all day.

The thing I liked the most was his presence. He was a real focal point for the whole match. He read the play well and consistently drew several opponents to him. In this regard he was again like JB and WC.

Great signs. Can't wait to see him again and to see him tested against the bigger bodies and brighter prospects. Very exciting.

Could he play another 5 years? 100 games at 3 goals a game gets him to 1000. 3 goals a game or just under is probably going to be a struggle though.

I think 3 years would be the most to expect out of him if he’s lucky with no injuries

He may retire with Joel as they are close mates so who knows really …5 would be wishful imo

I'm not usually one for posting Geelong stuff main board but thought 700 goals is one hell of an achievement- however not all see it that way

Credit to Tom (and the clubs fitness staff) on how he managed his body over the duration. There was a time a few years back when he said he couldn't bend to tie his shoe laces.

I think he will play atleast a year or 2 more than Selwood. Yes 5 would be pretty unlikely but I just think the way he plays suits being able to have longevity.

He looks good right now, but steady on with five (or even three) more years. Let's see how he's going in 12 months. When it ends, it ends quickly.

Not outside the realms of possibility that he gets the tap on the shoulder too if things ever click with Ratugolea or Shannon Neale starts showing signs. You want the next 5-10 year key forward to get a year or two alongside Cameron. Having Hawkins and Cameron retire within a year or so of each other without an obvious successor in either spot is poor list management.

But I love what big Hawk's given us for 15 years now. Doesn't seem that long ago I was hoping that one day he'd be an effective crash and bash 35 goals a year type... "If only he played like Chris Dawes..."

Ha ha C Dawes
I'd be surprised if he goes beyond end of next year

5 years is a pipedream

Jonathan Brown last night said he’s in the same conversation as Buddy. Nick Reiwoldt and Bucks agreed.
5 more goals and he passes Nick Riewoldt into 22nd of all time.

Edit: he's 1 ahead of Josh Kennedy who plays today.
