Recommitted Tom Papley [wanted to return to Victoria, nominated Carlton - didn't get there]

Realistically, I don't see how we get Papley without giving up a first.

Also, if Mason does go to Sydney anyway, are there any fringe Sydney players who are good but just can't get a look in that could interest North?

I would be happy enough to give up next year's first and Wood for him. I feel that North needs their first this year to get someone like a Ash for half-back, which is a more concerning part of the ground for North, rather than the forward line.

Could go to Carlton, but who knows with the Cognilio movement and such. Interesting trade period. I have my doubts on the 2 first rounder business, it's either bull or pure posturing.

Have a lot of decent youth coming through. We may look at Cameron as a ruck if Goldy decides to bugger off.

Yeah, I feel better about trading next years first (and Wood) if Papley did choose North, the Swans are smart traders and will probably be able to trade that back into this year if need be (there's a few retirements they need to cover). Bringing in high quality youth is much more of a priority this year - Papley is a gun but we have prospects there even if Wood leaves.

I’m sure it’ll be a fair deal than anything we posture.

A fair swap would be James Rose & a 4th rounder for Wood if we are really to do any deal with Wood. Shaw loves Rose & was his coach for two years as our NEAFL coach & knows what makes him tick.
Yeah..............this is real......Shaw will make Rose a Roo!

If the rumours are true that Cogs will stay with GWS, I believe Carlton will go in hard for both Jack Martin and Papley.

SOS is a very creative trader, sure he could find up a to get Paps to Carlton.

Swans need good picks, not list cloggers like Mason Wood.

I think it's kind of cute you've followed a few North posters in moving Wood to the Swans to fit your narrative of Carlton having more power for trade. If the Swans need good picks we're more than capable. Same goes for available funds to lure the player.

To be fair, I never actually said North had no chance to get Papley, sure there is a Rhyce Shaw connection there and I assume you have plenty of SC space, I just don't think the current offers sprouted by NMFC posters here would enough for a highly rated contracted player like Papley.

I can accept that... this time of the year sees the best and worst of player valuations. No chance clubs are going in lightly though.

I'm not sure a mature age, 1 game ruckman at one of the leagues worst ruck divisions is the answer.

Tom Campbell is good enough backup, the guy will probably win the Liston.

I'd rather we trade up for Luke Jackson.

Really want him but with both teams' awkward draft pick proximity it doesn't seem likely that we can get a deal over the line.

Maybe if we deal a future second for Langdon, this years second + next years 3rd and 4th for the 2020 Swans academy crop? If i was sydney I wouldn't be taking that deal though, I rate him very highly

Congrats to Swans for retaining Papley. No request from him for trade on exit interview either. Swans have no reason to let him go unless there is 2 firsts from someone.

Papley won't go unless Blues offer up Adelaide's Pick 8 and perhaps even something else. Sydney in a great position here, and most likely he stays now IMO

I honestly don't see that as a roadblock at all. It was always going to be hard to move a contracted young leader from his club.

Whether he leaves or not will be decided on Papley's happiness level staying at Sydney. You can fight through homesickness( or whatever you wanna call wanting to return to home state) for a year and perform, but 3 or 4 years would be tough.

Bottom line is if he is ok on staying, he will stay.

If he is really keen to come home, he will almost certainly get there.

If he is set on leaving, Sydney will extract due compo whether he is contracted for 1 year or 4 years. If a Club wants him, they will pay. What Sydney ask for him, after all the 2way posturing is done, will be dependant on what they judge Papley's happiness at staying will be and how much they think they can get out of the suitor.

tldr...the circs line up very well for Sydney to get top dollar for Papley via trade, but i don't think the fact he is contracted for 4 there instead of 1 matters a jot.

Except gives swans massive leverage and time to get him to stay for up to three years

Update title to out of contract 2023 mods

He he he he ........oh dear Carlton & North supporters.
What now?
James Rose is gettable & like Tom Mitchell a few years ago:rolleyes:, he is not getting regular senior footy & getting a truckload of possessions in the NEAFL.
Hell, he could even win a Brownlow too at the Blues.
