I know some have mentioned Sam De Koning as a possible target and after thinking about it for a bit, I'd hope that Blair is planting a seed in the minds of Geelong by mentioning that we may be willing to help them facilitate a trade for Bailey Smith, by offering up one of our mid R1 picks, but it would need to be a worthwhile deal for us to part with the pick by saying someone like De Koning would be what it would take to get us interested
They’d tell us to fk off tho I reckon

Holmes is infinitely better than what we picked up. So that was the mistake.

The rest is a nil all draw atm with Saints probably gonna win because Higgins is a decent player.

Perennial prelimstring victim Holmes definitely better than the rest. But what were the odds of us selecting hiim if he hadn't traded the pick? It is not like we owned him then traded him.

Higgins has the jump on our guys due to being 4 years older than them. Higgins is a more than decent small forward but Brown and Clarke are shaping perfectly well if they can get their bodies right. Both have some very strong attributes.

His manager always thought he was a best 22 player

Higgo was in and out of the team in 2020 as expected following brain surgery and lack of pre season etc.

His manager thought his client was being mistreated, manager seeks opportunities elsewhere, saints show interest

Manager gets a great a deal for his client & himself, convinces Jack this is the right move for him and seeks trade

Club screws itself in trade giving up Jack + 20? for 17 or so

Can you believe the club traded Dan Butler Jack Higgins + Pick 21 2020 ie Max Holmes for Pick 17 2021(Tom Brown), Pick 30 (Judson Clarke) & 56 (Biggy Nyoun)?

Even with Brown & Clarke looking like 2 of our better potential young players, that is some of the worst trading i have ever seen. We could have just had Higgins, Butler & Max Holmes. Side would have looked a hell of a lot better, especially forward and on the wing.

So would SDK.

DeKoning's record is actually not very good at all. He was hugely flattered by their team structure in 2022. It is perhaps likely he will mature into a strong player from 25-26yo onwards but we'd be recruiting potential rather than performance.

He is a player I would take great care in giving up any premium pick for. It would not shock me at all if the Cats let him go for a really high end pick. But I doubt anyone would offer it.

You are right. We probably would have ****ed up the draft pick cos we are such dum-dums

If the club would have taken him or not is irrelevant, the pick that we gave up was directly used to get Max Holmes. A good Club would have taken Max Holmes. And to be honest, Max Holmes with his pace is the exact type of player we should have been looking for with that pick too, amongst other needs of course.

Higgins, Butler & Holmes in our side would possibly make us 3 wins better a season. The forwardline with Lynch, MRJ, Dusty, Butler, Higgins, Bolton, LeFau, Campbell, Kosi, Clarke, Mansell - would have actually had blokes fighting for spots, even after injuries ravaged us.

Holmes on the wing instantly makes our wings 3-4 times better as it means we can play whichever of Pickett or Kmac was in the best form, of, the club could have tried something different for once and played Dan Riolli(rotating with MRJ) on the other wing to actually build our forward entries from our wings vs our HB-line. With KMac & Pickett, we have essentially been playing 2 Defensive-Wings for the past few years.

The Centre-to-forward part of the ground would have been miles, miles better that what we saw this year. Which instantly makes our backline better as it wouldn't be getting mauled 80% of the game. Balta & Baker could have just stayed back and we could have went back to a simialr look we had in 2020 back there... Balta, Baker, Vlaustin, Broad, Short - with Young. Miller + Blight/Grimes/Mansell. I doubt we would have made finals this year on that side - but I think we would have been in the case for long parts of the season.

This is why its infuriating when supporters act like this level of downfall was "unavoidable". There have been so many great opportunities for the club.

Its not just Butler, Higgins, Holmes - its also Hogan, who was a genuine option for us when he moved, the club & players could have gotten around that talk and done alot more - but we didn't. We had Markov, and traded him for a pick we didn't even use - it was just the fodder that evened out the CCJ trade. The club had both McRae Kingsley, as well as Leppa as assistants & a bloody good, strong, ethical reason to sack Dimma. His affair and the teams lack of discipline was the first MASSIVE red flag that something was wrong & the club had 3 A-Chip replacements sitting next to him ready to go.

Alternative universe stuff ? Club sacks Dimma for breaking company policy & standards with the affair in the hub. Appoints either of Kingsley, or even Mc-Rae - with Leppa happy staying on as their assistant, with Mini + Balmey, Gale. Peggy decides to stay on an extra 2 years to ensure the club gets through the wild sacking. We have 3-4 years of that team still together and united in their standards, moving forward.

Club recruits Max Holmes & Jesse Hogan. Retains Butler Markov Higgins, Castagna. Combine that with if they could have successfully developed ONE of Syd Stack, Tyson Stengle, Callum Coleman Jones, Riley Collier Dawkins or Dow who all either showed real potential, or were drafted with good picks. With all that, you wouldn't even need to wipe the Taranto/Hopper deal - as the picks we traded would have been considerably weaker - but i am still nuking that ****ing deal in my curated timeline.

The team could have easily stayed competitive while retaining all their picks + more assets that could be moved on for picks if a heavy rebuild needed to happen. By all the above happening, we would have likely had 3 more 1st rounders + 2 more 2nd rounders than we ended up with, just on the Hopper/Taranto deal alone. Then add to that our literal non-action in the trade/free agency market for the past 5 years & the amount of chances we blew or passed by has been a tremendous **** up

Garbage post. Richmond had not spoken to Holmes. Your hindsight is top class.

Geelong would want too much for SDK even though he wasn't in there best team, I wouldn't be against going after him only if it pushes Nankervis out of the team. that's where I would play him as ruck not as a defender. I think he could develop into one of the better rucks.

Holmes is a very good player, though a 2 time finals hamstring loser at 22yo, so he needs to overcome that, that is pretty abnormal.

But a good club would have taken him you say....12 clubs took picks before Max Holmes and did't select him. One has won a flag since and another one will this week. And as yet, Holmes has not played in a flag.

He beat Tom Lynch. Offers would come if anyone thought they had a hope of getting him. The only club that does is Carlton but it's more likely his brother joins him at Geelong than the other way around.

We're zero chance.

What does that say about us then?

honestly, we do not have Holmes and I am not worried in the slightest. What worries me is how they got Bowes plus pick 7.

we have the opportunity now to fly under the radar before we surge and not just surge but a long lasting rocket would be the idea, like a slingshot when we are ready

no one is talking about RFC, apart from the draft which is what we want. If Smith is a druggo obviously don't take him either, I have no idea, just inferences from other BF posts

The thing is if we did not trade the pick to geelong we would not have selected Holmes anyway

We knew he was there and didnt rate him

But it's a great opportunity for him to catastrophize a bad Richmond move (which it really wasn't anyway)...

2016 would've been heaven for RJK

Tom Lynch left 1 v 1 with DeKoning would destroy him.

If the game you are referring to is the 2022 clash, Lynch took 5 contested marks, kicked 3 goals and got 2 coaches votes. And DeKoning illegally blocked him out of a contest very late in the game that should have been a 4th goal and Richmond winning.

To fancy DeKoning, you have to first work out what role you want him playing. He may improve but in 2024 we have seen him consistently lowering his colours when playing key defence and mainly getting well beaten by physically stronger ruckmen. For mine there is probably a decent chance he becomes a strong player in the future, but based on performance right now as a 23yo(so not a raw kid) he would not be worth any rd 1 pick. It would purely be a recruit based on perceived potential. And I don't think Blair likes that strategy.

So if the Cats wouldn't be interested and DeKoning wouldn't be interested I think that would make all 3 parties not interested.

Says all you need to know about Matty Clarke
They actually discussed this Holmes draft a week ago and the boys on fox were discussing how no other club drafted him.
And what they said was Holmes actually only played 2 games in 2 years during the covid years and both games were in the geelong area and the cats had watched him for years due to some connection.

They took the chance on his running and athletic ability more than his footballing ability
