Hopefully we walk away from the trade if they somehow match the offer.
Actually, what is the process.

Can CFC up the ante - I wouldn't have thought so.

If Sydney match - is it up to Hewett to accept or not.
If he doesn't accept what's next? I'm not too sure

If Sydney match, Hewett can decide to stay or leave.

If he elects to leave, Sydney and Carlton negotiate a trade.

yep, just needed a little soap to to lubricate the deal..........

Thanks for that - extremely clear info!

A quick question - why does Sydney have 3 days to counter, but we already have two players already traded - without those 3 days to counter by their former club?

I believe clubs can register their decision not to match prior to the three days expiring.

Eg. Tigers formally indicated that they are not going to match Chol, so the player is allowed to officially move prior to the three days expiring.

Because the other two were unrestricted free agents. Hewett is restricted so Sydney have the opportunity to match.

Yeah this is what I thought as well

Swans likely just weighing up what compo they’d get as opposed to Hewett’s trade value

Let’s hope the on the run formula is kind to us at AFL house…

Two reasons to match. One is to keep the player. Other is belief you can get a better pick via trade. Given negotiations for Cerra, trade could become messy. Sydney have to work out what's best for them... But I cannot see why they would match as I cannot see how they would get a better pick without a lot of hassle... Just the way I see it...

Yep, I really don't expect Sydney to match. Hewett likely to be a Carlton player as early as tomorrow.

Why would we walk away.
I’d argue that the terms of the offer are predicated on us not having to give up anything for him. If the cost changes changes (ie it’s now 4x450 plus a late first rounder), then I think the cost/benefit analysis changes for us.

Its also why Sydney won’t match just to force a trade, we could walk away. They’ll only match if they can afford to keep him IMO

If Sydney do match they will have to go to the back of the line and wait for us to do the Cerra deal. I don't think we will want to give up a second rounder (given we need that to get KP depth) and they should get a late 2nd or start of 3rd.

Swans are unlikely to match, we already have a few young mids that'll likely need more midfield mins to improve their development.

IMO Hewett is a very smart acquisition, mid 20s and a great inside mid who is defensively superb. He'll set high standards at training and is a high character individual. Tom Harley has spoke glowingly about him. It's a shame we can't keep him but we need to balance it with other guys in our list and midfield composition.

I really hope he gets a pure midfield role, I can see him having a similar impact to Aliir for your team. He's also very consistent with his performance which is one less worry for a new coach like Voss.
