After that saints game, been thinking about our period of dominance to Hawthorn period.

They had five years, making the granny in 2012 to top 4 again in 2016 (can completely ignore their 2018 top finish as a flash in the pan given they key personnel changes). That extra year of dominance, in my opinion comes down to the trading in they did of mature players when in their window. Lake, frawley and McEvoy filled key holes. I haven't included gunston, hale or Burgoyne as they were added before 2012,ad hence can be argued as opening the window, not keeping it open.

We haven't gone that route, possibly put of fear that we'd fall off a cliff like Hawthorn. But when you look at the quality of the mature age recruits Hawthorn took in (all of whom took under) , and the quality we had available during our period, we never had all Australian quality coming out of contracts wanting to play for chips with may with a few exceptions.

Most of those recruits hawthorn got came from previously strong teams on the decline, it was unfortunate that for us the strong teams on the decline in the last few years the players that want out were either way over the hill or just plain shit.

The only players that we wouldn't have had to pay much for and had an impact is Treloar, Steph Martin, alir alir, Hickey and Wright. Potentially Alir and Wright may have been to hard to squeeze in the cap. Given what Collingwood are still paying, I feel the only real misses we've Treloar and Martin or Hickey.

Treloar is probably the one that makes the least difference, a fit and healthy list and our midfield can match any other teams midfield. But we missed an opportunity not bringing in one of Hickey or Martin, if we really wanted to push this year.

Start of the year our most glaring vulnerability has been our ruck, and that hasn't changed. Would we be closer or entrenched into the top four with Hickey or Martin in a ruck combo with nankervis. I reckon so, too many close games that a second tall marking ruck down the line would have released a lot of pressure.

I’m actually more concerned about our immediate structure given the injuries than the loss itself . Our form prior save for some 10min bursts was more than solid so we can get it back on the rails ,, lynch will help but covering for balta and broady will be huge challenge for Miller and Garth

To be honest there is so much injuries you can cover and then your patching holes.

Hit the draft with our quality picks simple as that free agency if it's a decent player no problems. Wouldn't be trading for Cerra unless one of the WA boys want to go home.CCJ has to be resigned our talls are thin now Balta, Soldo long term and a few question marks on others.Draft for me.

Couldnt agree more

We need to use our top 4 picks in this years draft to replenish our KPP needs
Cerra would be a massive mistake , The Kid is a nice player that accumulates possessions but just has no hurt factor and is allergic to kicking goals and just looks timid in games.

There is some really nice talented players in the top 30 this year and if we could trade our 2x3rd rounders to get into the top 20 we will have4/5 very very nice picks and could easily do a Port with their 3 kids in Rozee/Duursma/Butters.

Also need to save some cash with the 'BIG Lynch money years coming'

Cerra certainly divides opinions.
David King thinks he's a star and cream on top .
Whately thinks he's worth 400
Leppa thinks he's 4 inline mid at Freo doesn't see the hype in him .
Maybe he's somewhere in the middle of all that but what's he cost in $ and picks ?

I’ll go with Leppa thanks.

I’m not sure sure about that
Leppa is an excellent gameday coach and tactician but his scouting abilities and projections of what a player can be in the future may be not great

His drafting when at the lions was pretty bad apart from academy picks
The only real pick of note who wasn’t an academy player was McCluggage

who ever pays 700k for Cerra has rocks in their head. Watching him yesterday was solid but not a player that deserves to be in the top 10% salaries in the competition.
He’ll want a medium- long term contract too. For a player that doesn’t have the runs on the board it’s far to risky. You’re basing a decision on the upside you think he has in him. At this stage nothing says potential A grader more solid B grader

Recruiting is/wasn’t his responsibility.
You can point the finger re development but not recruiting

I think he has the traits to be an A grader easily
Not many inside Mids who have the foot skills he’s does
In a team like ours we have a lot of mids with great hands but none who are particularly good kicks especially in traffic and congestion
His ability to find a target is second to none

It’s all relative he’s the one who identified the needs and types of players he wanted on the list at the time
You are literally basing his comments on Cerra from a development point of view and you just said yourself he failed in terms of development

I really can’t see it.
I’m not saying he’s a dud just saying I wouldn’t be paying a player like him 700k over 4 years.
You have better players on significantly less at our club who have taken unders to accomodate Lynch and Dusty.

Who says we need to offer him 700k
That’s just what clubs like carlton are offering him
They are going though a club review and could be looking at another sr coach and could spend another 3 or 4 years in the wilderness

It just depends what motivates him
Richmond are extremely stable in terms of coaching, board and football department and he has a much higher chance for success with us
If it’s success that motivates him it’s not unreasonable for him to come to us for 500 - 600 with triggers for bnf position, all Australian ect

That wasn’t meant to be a crack at Leppa but more a general comment that coaches responsibility lies with development not recruiting.

I really have no idea what sort of job he did developing Brisbane’s list. From player feedback was very good assistant for us though

What would you be happy to offer for him in a trade with Freo?

For a 21 year old that will play 22+ in our midfield for the next 8 plus years and be a walk in starter every week that also has a skill set that none of our mids currently have
I’m happy to give up a first rounder and player (within reason of course) or first rounder and 2nd rounder with a pick coming back to us

Basically the same as what we paid for Prestia who met similar needs and was in a similar position at Gold Coast at the time

“Richmond will get Prestia and pick No.24 and send pick No.6 and their future second-round pick to Gold Coast”
