Our issue is we lack foot skills and our fwds do not lead up to the ball carrier we still bomb the ball long and with Lynch out we have no one capable of marking it. Modern footy requires ball movement by foot via the corridor and fwds who lead up to the ball carrier ala Collingwood we have too may foot soldiers who played a part in the bomb it long system that is now outdated.
We should be moving heaven and earth to trade our way back into the draft and using a few stars as bait.
Dusty, Jack, Cotchin are done, Grimes, Vlastuin, KMac in twighlight
I’d be offering Bolton, Soldo, Short, Graham, Baker up for anyone who can get us into the pointy end of the draft.
What an atrocious idea Bolton baker bOth <25 and short are our best players , you need a cornerstone to build a team . That’s one of the worst ideas I’ve seen yet , glad you dont have the reigns

Both Kings have been extremely over paid and over rated so far with neither delivering what they have promised so far

They are not at the level of Tom Lynch at the same age
I’ve always held that view at 800plus they should be taking games apart , nowhere near it

Agree. I suggested in a thread on the main board earlier this year that Max King was over-rated when someone had re-ordered the 2019 draft and had him at #2, or something ridiculous like that. By hell I copped it from all angles, and not just St Kilda supporters.

He'd kicked less than 120 goals in over 60 games at that stage, and I suggested Isaac Quaynor (who wasn't even in the blokes re-ordered top 10) had probably even provided better value for his club.

To be fair, half back is the easiest position to play in the AFL... Max King is playing in arguably the most difficult.

Quaynor stats will always look good due to the amount of free ball half backs get.

Not a single team would pick IQ over MK.

But yes, both King boys have a long way to go.

If i name names then all the old heads just lose their minds and I can't be bothered to justify why trades work in our favour

Which players do we have moving forward that show A-grade potential? Id be hard-pressed to name one

We need to cool our jets. Gibcus is 195cm and has played half a season. Banks/Brown haven’t played mostly due to injury issues. I’ll be very surprised if Gibcus isn’t an excellent player once he gets back. Brown/Banks I have no idea, but having seen them at VFL level they definitely have ability and some excellent traits for AFL. We will know a lot more in 12-months.

I feel like our draftees over the last year haven't been the best and our team now looks like great players retired or retiring, and younger players (a few exceptions aside) who won't be premiership players. That is to do with our draft picks starting in the late teens but i dug into the 5 last drafts and what stuck out was that we traded players out quite low (3rd to 4th round for stengle, lloyd, butler, the miles and Ellis to Gold Coast was for a swap of second round picks), then no compo for conca, Ellis a late one, chol a late one. Ccj and Higgins basically we got a first round pick back after spending a first round. So we weren't really able to help our recruiters, not like for example wingard out for 2 first round picks for for Port for example.

Hindsight is obviously great but we would have been better off if a player wanted out and were able to trade into top 10 picks, maybe pushing harder for a higgins better compo etc. Then again some of our drafting, we have a lot of misses and there are a lot of good players with picks after ours.

The 2 picks for Hopper are the icing on the cake on a few errors in the last 5 years.

We added another scout this year but our recruiting definitely need more hits. Unfortunately no rd 1 this year so our adding of talent really starts in 2024 draft. I feel we have wasted 2022 and 2023 Unfortunately.

I would be throwing the kitchen sink at pick 1 to get Harley Reid I would even give up shai bolton as he is from WA for him as Bolton bad games are really stinkers and his good is very good and a little bit inconsistent at times we need that inside bull like another dusty we need to make a
bold move apparently gws will be going hard as well to get him

You want to trade out our best player under 25 who just signed a long term extension to get a drafted who may not even turn out to be as good while also having no plan to get other players to complement Reid

I'd love Reid but we can't give up bolton unless he wants to go home. Really all we can give up is anyone who wants to go home, or some players we can afford to lose who have value to someone else, maybe like a Graham somewhere, a soldo? If we could get 3 or 4 positions we could package them for one good pic? Damn Bowes would have been a useful free hit if we could have afforded him. With the retirements this year maybe we take a salary dump to get ourselves a pick?

He would be an ideal replacement for dusty or Prestia when they retire and we will still have hopper and taranto may as well get him to learn off the best in dusty sometimes you have to give up something special to get something special

Players hold clubs to ransom with money clubs can do whatever they want to get a return it’s business and you have to keep on your toes to stay ahead of the pack we shed boltons salary jack will retire maybe Cotchin as well and graham might be gone tarrant will be gone we will be well placed under the cap to get himmelberg as well and maybe another midfielder

But it’s not an net improvement so what is the point if anything it puts the list backwards because you are getting rid of a player that’s special right now for a player that may not be special and if he is wont be for 5 - 6 years

As amazing as Dusty is and was he wasn’t the guy pulling us over the line until he was 25 - 26 years old

Yet you have an expectation that Ried will come in and be the difference maker?

Rowel and Walsh both similar generational talent before they got drafted but both are just barely a graders at this point and if they do live up to the potential it won’t be for a number of more years

Why would you give up Bolton for a player with the potential to be as good as Bolton? Shai is only 24 too, so is only just hitting his prime.

Bolton untouchable. Can’t say we have to many. We do need to get back into the first round though.
Hope we're talking to the suns. They don't need this years 1st rnd with a couple of very handy academy kids.
Swap nexts years 1sts for this years.
Our 2nd for their 4th
Our 4th for their 3rd(2024)

If we do get it.Pending if we do get Hummingbird i'm hoping we get Nick Watson.

The untouchables list will need to grow. Unfortunatley

do what they did in collingwood, no firesale, not worth it, bring in someone like McRae who can renew energy and get the best out of the current group. Could be a quick bounce back Collingwood finished 17th in 2020 didn't they?

Gibcus isn’t tradeable and to be honest I would probably say Short isn’t either just based on how popular he is in the group to go along with his ability to play
Thought the same thing
Gibcus is our most important young player right now especially when we consider our need for key position players
Absolutely untouchable

Shorts age and experience also makes him extremely important with guys like Jack and Cotch not around for much longer
He is in that next tier of leader behind the captains and makes us a better side on gameday

I'm thinking Himmelberg could be a really good get for us as a backman. Having intercept weapons who can attack from the back half is really important with how the game is being played right now, and with Balta, Gibcus, Himmelberg, Vlastuin and Broad we'd have the best group for this in the league.

Himmelberg also gives us the flexibility to throw him forward if/when Lynch goes down again + we could also look at trialing Gibcus up forward while we've got one more year with Grimes.
