Player ratings are credible to an extent, and yes Soldo had a decent first half, but the eye test wins out and Gawn murdered us in the second half. He himself admitted he was flat in the first half and got a rocket from Goodwin. End of the day he and Petty were the difference

Gawn got on a roll and destroyed us. But this doesn't really diminish what Soldo showed in that match. There is a reason Port have coughed up good draft capital for him, and no doubt a decent contract. He is a man mountain at his physical peak who has been in the system for 10 years and despite some difficulties isn't as battered as most rucks of his age and quality. We have definitely lost a good player, it is just a matter of whether the other factors, his contract saving, and draft picks received are of more value to us than Ivan himself. Having a ruck like him in reserve was an huge and valuable luxury for us, sadly we didn't have him in reserve as often as we'd have liked when Nankervis was unavailable due to Soldo himself being injured.

I’ve got faith in Samson, and Naismith or whoever we pick up will be a stopgap for 2024 if we need. But Samson had a higher hitout to advantage percentage than Soldo this year, if that’s anything, and I think he’s already proven he’s better around the ground, up forward, and has better skills. Apparently Balmey said he’s put on 7kgs and is up to 107kg now as well, so surely he’ll be stronger in the contest in 2024.

That is the key thing with Sam Ryan, he has to get strong enough to be able to stay on his feet in ruck contests and marking contests. And then get stronger again to be able to throw his weight around after ruck contests. Soldo was the finished article in those 2 areas.

But the club had to make decisions about how best to list manage Nankervis, Soldo and Ryan. I don't have a particular problem with how this has been handled. I hope Soldo kills it at Port. With a fair run I think he will do really well. So good recruiting by them, good decision by Soldo to get a good contract while he can, and good on Richmond for insisting on decent compensation.

Balta to make it 80 goals between the 2 of them
dont know bout Balta, has he proven hes got FWD craft ?i woulda thought the night he failed to realise youve only 30sec to shoot for goal was the red flag & his demise with any hope at being a FWD,also wasnt Kosi recruited for the tall FWD role ?
ive yet to read a solid argument as to y RFC is a better team with DRioli off HB,is it bc he gets more possessions ? 😂😂
i remember no too long ago 2 blokes named Cotchin n Martin getting truck loads of possessions offa n around HB,howd that go again ?

dangerous players who have the proven ability to kick multiple goals consistently getting the majority of their touches 80-90mtrs away from the goal square are useless,is DRioli a dangerous player ? my word he is,not only that, hes proven hes a dangerous fwd to boot

no offence but id put Balta in the 'absolute useless fwd' category, only reason i say that is bc hes proven it.i havent proven it
nah nah,he himselfs done that

I think people are seriously under estimating just how good Balta could be as a forward, it's a bit harsh to judge him over a brain fade or a lack of confidence in taking the game on and having a crack at goals with his booming kick.

At the start of the 2022 season he was given the opportunity (after training with the forwards a bit in the preseason) as a 3rd tall forward. In the 1st game he kicked 2 goals and unfortunately Riewoldt went down with an injury. 2nd game he snagged 4 goals as the 2nd tall, a pretty good game by anyone's measure. 3rd game he kicked another 2 goals. So 8 goals in 3 games, to put that in context, Lynch had 6. Jack came back in round 4 where Balta was utilised then as a more ruck/forward for a few games, then back to defense with the odd pinch hit forward and in the ruck.

I am of the firm opinion that if he was given full licence to take the game on, trust his boot, have kicking goals as his main priority and none of this defensive forward BS then he would prove to be one of the most damaging forwards in the game.

Trouble is that he's also one of, if not the best, intercept markers in the game.

Under rating Rioli. I think he is a star and will be a vital part of us improving if we improve. He is a better user of the ball that Houli, and has now developed the same attacking work rate that Houli had. And maybe his best position is the wing, would like to see him tried there.

Are you including Lynch in your forward set up, because they recruited Kosi to play forward in much the same position that Balta played when forward. I'd be very surprised to see Balta anywhere near the forward line if those two are uninjured, or it turns out that Kosi isn't much chop.

I think Balta's days as a forward are done and dusted. I was just making the point that he could have been a real weapon forward. His opportunity to cement a spot probably should have been last season instead of Miller, unfortunately season long injuries to Gibcus and Tarrant negated it.

Gibcus is an option forward as well. He will have missed a lot of football so nice way to ease him back.

we need proven small goalkickers, elite campaigners ,we have one of the best if not the best in Daniel,he makes booby hill look pedestrian
lookin fwd to seeing booby play off HB next season for the filth collecting his 22-23,why wouldnt he McCrea pull the move,Dimma did
and look what its netted us in the last 3 seasons:rolleyes: so now, right now theres 3 maybe 4 players left on the entire list with a blade of fwd ability & Daniel & Lunch r 2 of them
that doesnt include goat n shai as theyre required in our midfield almost FT as our midfield is as slow as treacle
anyway my stance remains,DRioli starts FWD bc hes an elite small fwd,any muppet can run around HB racking up #'s,just look @ NDaicos,in his defence tho at least he drifts down for the odd goal

He needs to learn how to take a mark - drops literal sitters with 0 contested pressure

Right, so should we rate him on numbers from years ago when often as not he's playing second fiddle or with really limited game time, or the most recent time he had the #1 role to himself - against Melbourne?

I would have thought the answer was pretty obvious.

128 is elite ruck territory by anyone's definition. Most especially against Gawn with Melbourne's finals on the line.

Gawn has only averaged over 128 for a season twice in his career, one of those at 128.4.
Dude, one game FFS haha

He marks the footy really well in teh VFL from what I have seen, and was ok in his first few games at AFL.

I think a combination of fatigue, and self doubt/low confidence at the top level may have got the better of him towards the end of the season. But that happens with most players the year they get a real crack in the seniors, no matter how old they are.

I think another year, confidence hopefully from the new coach, stacks of opportunity on the field, Lynch and kozi taking the main defenders up forward, might just be the set up he needs to really come on this year

Well we all have different opinions
I think Yze will play Noah as 2nd ruck/ forward
In my humble opinion his best position

The umpire ****ed up on the one where Max gawn tackle Noah as he was kicking for goal

They're all roundabout ways of avoiding admitting that "2nd string" rucks don't pump out elite 128's with 15 hitouts-to-advantage against Max Gawn. ;)

Ever. ;)
As it stands he's been a second string ruck for us for a decade. Let's see how he goes now that he'll be the number 1 guy
He wasn't dominating Soldo as a ruckman, quite the opposite.

He scored over half of his game rating in the 9% of the match where he was on the field and Soldo was on the bench, rucking against Miller and then a combination of Balta and Pickett. Every second of Soldo's rating was earned on Gawn, not part-timers.

Despite flogging Soldo for meaningless possessions, he was still behind Soldo when he went to the bench in the 4Q, because Soldo was clearly the better ruckman on the day for the pure ruck stuff.
Soldo out performed Max that much that Max only scored the 10 coaches votes and 3 Brownlow votes. That is why Supercoach scores are a dumb way to judge a players impact on games.
Clearly Brisbane, Collingwood and Port didn't get that memo. ;)
They'll catch up soon enough

I believe Tiger71 said we'd been keen on Sharp.for a while.

Completely agree. Soldo is way too good to be a part time AFL ruck. But Nank ain't going anywhere.

Port has really improved their midfield with him. Not sure it is the solution the way their supporters seem to think.

We did OK, but not really to what Soldo can do for Port. It might be a steal for them, and good enough for us.

Was he that good as a small forward? He was heading for a spell in the VFL before he was moved to defense, and that was when we were pretty good. Yes he's a better player than Hill, but Hill only really played one really good game so not really the measuring stick of small forwards.

Rioli's attack of half back is not about getting 22-23 average possessions, he is really damaging and a creative ball user.

From memory GC gave up what ended up being pick 11 to Geelong for the pick they used to take Sharp and now he’s been delisted

I understand all clubs make mistakes but the way that club is run is complete shambles
Sharp can’t play Dimma wing role. Might be useful in Yze’s plans 🤷🏻‍♂️
