VAFA General Discussion 2022-2023-2024

It's the sequencing that's the issue. Signalling that the game is over and THEN signalling a free kick makes no sense at all.
Like when the rule changed for the ball hitting the goalpost - used to signal post, tap shoulder, behind. Now it snicks the inside of the post, everyone sees it goes through the goals, and the goalie stands there like a goose tapping their shoulder for a behind.

But like I said, the alternative you propose means everyone has a pile-on on the umpire because they "didn't hear the siren"...

Geez the vafa would be hoping for a good spectacle on Friday.

Premier grade grand finals to date have the winner beating the losers by a combined score of 266 to 83.

Well done to Haileybury and Carey but it’s not quite the showcase end to the season youd hope for

If the VAFA wants to continue its 3 week finals format, would it be a good idea if the 1st & 2nd semi finals in the Premier-Premier C was held on the same day in week 1, with the club that finishes 1st & 3rd at the end of the home and away season in their respective sections allowed to host the semi final, with only the preliminary in week 2 and grand finals in the 3rd week to be played at neutral venues?

So did the losers have an off day or just not up to it in both grades?
If the later then I fear how they will go up a section 🤷🏼‍♂️. Before you all jump down my throat…..as I know it’s a VAFA thing but is it time to review the 2 up / down system?

Grand Final Honest Match Report

Ground - Fast and nearly perfect. Wind was not a real factor for either end.

OH v DLS

OH we’re favourites coming into the game and they showed why today.

Stronger bigger and cleaner all day.

The 3 young guns up front were just too good.
Bill Burr kicked 5, but is was Jones and Harrop who did the real damage.

Defensively OH were solid not giving any freebies to the DLS forwards.

Woodrow for DLS was again magnificent, but it looked like DLS spent all its tickets last week.

Fumbly all day, could take the marks when needed and field kicking was poor.

DLS just had a bad day.

The 2’s was a cracker of a game with the best team all year coming out on top.

OT’s skipper who doesn’t look like a footballer at all kicked two of the best goals seen at TBO.

DLS played catchup all day.

Favourites both deserved their wins.

Great to see the DLS player badly broke his leg at the game. A big smile, but was hurting with the games result.

FWIW I think it just highlights the importance of winning the second semi and the advantage that brings. Prelims are usually tough hard fought contests. DeLa and Hampton both looked tired. Makes things interesting this week for Brighton, unfortunately for them Scotch got away with a bruise free last qtr.

Hampton were equal with Old Carey at the end of season. Hampton had a hard game against a dangerous Parkdale.

OH after a sloppy start to the season, dominated the rest of the year. DLS were pushed by a galant OT last week. DLS had a very bad day, and OH were way to good on the day.

Hampton Rovers wasn’t helped by the fact that the preliminary final was last Sunday, which meant they only had a 6 day break compared to Old Carey’s 14. In hindsight, the preliminary final really should’ve been played the day before (Saturday).

I know I am in the minority but I agree with you on the 2 up 2 down, at least in the Premier grades. If I had more time I would provide the evidence to support the argument but recent history suggests runners up (and often the Premiers) regularly get related within a season or two. Always exceptions (SKOB B grade Premiers 2015, A grade Premiers 2017) but the majority find the going really tough, often to the detriment of the club and playing group. Fair enough for the divisional grades as it provides an opportunity to move up through the ranks but personally I hate the idea of losing a GF and being promoted.

In regard to the B Grade GF - not surprised but the result but shocked by the margin. OH loaded with talent and were red hot. Just far too good on the day. DLS had a shocker and never fired a shot. Will have some organic improvement with a young list but unless they can recruit substantially I fear 2025 will be a very challenging for the club. If OH can put that side on the park each week they will be more than competitive. Issue for them is the high number of VFL listed players and if they are missing they just don’t have the depth to cover. Stars aligned for them this year with availability but that can change.

When the VAFA review their season, one thing that must be looked at is the finals series format.

Should the VAFA stick with the status quo (that is the final 4), or go with a final 5 system, and allow the clubs that finish 2nd and 4th to host the qualifying and elimination finals respectively?

And also, should they go back to the old 4 week timeframe instead of 3 weeks when planning for next week?

Great ideas mate.

Wish the VAFA on Friday, to make it possibly the biggest Premier GF Crowd since St Bernards & Old Trinity (absolute epic at Ikon Park), had a designated section available for punters to have a drink and enjoy the Public Holiday.

I see online there is a point of 2pm - Function Room/Bar Open to Public, but imagine on the Bowls Club side a marquee, fenced off area so that a bit of atmosphere could be matched with the fans behind both goals.

Looking forward to the responses of "if you can't go 2 hours without a beer on a Saturday you have a problem".

The difference in atmosphere and vibe between the B Grade GF & down the road at the SFNL GF at Moorabbin was poles apart.

Drink Responsibly.

Don't know about the Prem B crowd however the Prem C crowd was large and loud.

Should have won the 2nd semi then; Had the home ground advantage which cancels out the 6 day break. I do agree though the the prelim should have been on the Saturday however the VAFA is constrained by ground availability.

DLS will do far better in 2025 than OH. As you have identified OH top end talent will be in demand and they have no depth whatsoever. You need a squad of 40 dedicated players up to the standard

Ikon Park is the answer

Your wish has been granted, the public bar will be open from 2pm, that is enough.

All we need now is Harry Hill to play under another name and we will have a great GF!

De La are a real A grade club, I have no doubt they will be more than competitive in 2025.
OH will be okay as well, Stefanakis is destined to be a full time VFL player, whilst they have a lot of young talent.
However, if they have a bad run with injuries, we all know they have zero depth, that will be their major issue.

I’m also hoping some of the OX posters on here can recommend what to do on VAFA grand final day? I’m normally watching my team play in them, unlike the red and black, any suggestions would be much appreciated 😎
