List Mgmt. We Got Him! Beams Trade Discussion (Not the Hype Thread)

Prior to the Copeland trophy, everyone believed (though I didn't) that Beams' motives for leaving were purely centered around his dad. Where Beams was expected to be on Copeland trophy night was at the awards ceremony. He was not expected to be doing anything other than making a gracious speech as he received his reward. Lumumba despite his self indulgent 'I am a prince' speech and a known rift with Buckley at least had the good grace to attend the Copeland.

As for Beams not being worth 2 first round picks, this is where we obviously differ. Brisbane, despite offering Beams $800000 a year, did not sufficiently rate Beams in terms of what they were prepared to give up for him. For that simple reason, he will not be playing for you next year.

The first round currently ends at 21, with another 2 live picks before 25...surely your super recruiter in Derek Hine can produce his magic against those massive odds

Just look at how well he did last year, with the likes of Tony Armstrong, Jesse White, Taylor Adams & Patrick Karnezis

anyone hear about this?

"It's been revealed by the AFL website that Brisbane called off the Dayne Beams trade at the 11th hour on Friday, before Collingwood's 5pm deadline.

The Pies revealed that after the Lions declined a direct trade for picks 5, 21 and 25 for Beams and pick 30, Collingwood had engaged a five-club mega trade, which also the Lions knocked back.

The monster trade would have seen Beams and Allen Christensen end up at the Lions, Levi Greenwood and Travis Varcoe join Collingwood, MitchClark join Geelong, Heritier Lumumba join Melbourne and second- and third-round picks exchanged between North Melbourne and the other four clubs.

The deal had been ticked off by four of the five clubs, with Brisbane turning their nose up late Friday afternoon.

The deal is still a chance however go through, as the Lions will be running a medical screening on Christensen over the weekend."

Or our 2 top 10 picks that look like spending half their careers nursing injuries. The players you mention with the exception of Adams cost us little, though they also gave us little too. However Hine's and the draft's last 2 selections produced Langdon and Marsh who both seem to be excellent late pick ups. Hines is not the best in the business. The Hawks, Cats and Swans have beaten us in the recruiting and trading department.

The trade fell over because Geelong didn't see 30 and 48 as acceptable for Christensen. While it wasn't tied into the same trade, it would've been the best Brisbane could've done for the Cats to obtain Allen.

If you knocked back that deal then you don't deserve to get Beams. That is as good a deal as you could possibly hope for Beams. Cannot believe that Brisbane did not agree to it.

We called it off because we wanted a medical for Bundy.

Collingwood think they run the trade period or something announced a stupid deadline, the 5 way deal would have got done on Monday and everyone would have been happy.

According to Emma Quayle at The Age, they did. Geelong didn't. Geelong did agree to Pick 21 for Christenson though.

How could that deal be on the table; there are no ready made replacements for Beams...there are only draft picks which, as well all know, are totally useless

Despite all the back and forth between posters, 1 thing still remains. Not 1 of our players has put their hand up to go to Collingwood. We wont trade any of our players because it is pointless. Getting Beams would be great, but if we lost a good young player it is pointless. We would be much better off keeping our player and pick 5 and using it in the draft.

Now if any of our players wanted in on this deal, we would have heard about it by now. Not 1 of our players wants out. As much as Pies fans think we might yet give in, you are mistaken. We will happily keep our players and use the draft picks ourselves. We've already added Bundy to our team now. We really dont need Beams if we cant land him for 5 & 25.
To be honest (& I don't speak for all of us) I did find this a little worrying. (By 'this', I mean the point you raise about no Brissy players 'seemingly' wanting to come) I can't recall having too many issues attracting players in the past (except, of course, J Brown who told us to get effed). Slight worry IMO

Anyway, as an aside, I'm liking this renewed rivalry. I did a little fist pump when I read my club's statement. I'm sure many of you guys would have been fired up about the statements by your players & coach. Makes it a little more interesting!

Anyway, I'm aware of where I am & will see myself out, all the best, (except in the Beams trade, of course...)

Looks like a 5-way trade might still go through, meaning we'll give up 5, 21 and 25 for Bundy and Beams.

I think we called it off last night as we are just waiting on Christensen's medical

Is this just putting two and two together or have I missed something?

I wouldn't mind betting that the notion of Brisbane calling off any trade is straight from the Collingwood PR machine. If this trade was about to be done and one of the clubs wanted medicals done first, everyone would just politely wait. There is still plenty of trade time. The only ones with a different deadline to the official deadline is Collingwood. I'm sure everyone else would have been perfectly understanding of clubs needing to do medicals, it happens all the time. It could have all been done in a civil fashion on Monday morning among all the other clubs. Just more of Collingwood selling tough talk to their supporters.

You guys seem to be still attracting some players, just not our young ones. TBH, with a new coach and Lethal and Swann in charge there is probably a bit of a honeymoon buzz happening at the club. We had 6 very good young players get drafted at the same time last year and all play some senior games, so i think it is just a matter of our players being pretty happy where they are. The only outside chance might be a few at the bottom of the depth chart such as Golby or Crisp who might find getting games difficult.

Let's face it, there has always been bad blood beneath the surface with our clubs, and i think supporters on both sides enjoy it a bit. If we do end up playing the Pies round 1 next year as the Lions have asked, and we do get Beams, it is going to be a massive, massive game.
