We "will" be packing our bags come finals time

It's a flimsy excuse though. If he is our best midfielder - and he absolutely is - and we're losing the clearances, he needs to be on the ball a lot more.

There's nothing more to it than this.

Completely agree.

Didn't see GC plonk Ablett in the forward pocket against us on Saturday. Be nice if they had.

People are dreaming if they think we will make a prelim

Our backline is too tall, too old and too slow. It might do all right if we were playing WCE every week but we aren't.

Our midfield is cooked, Johnson and Selwood are done for the year. Caddy and Christensen have missed too many games from injury. Guthrie and GHS aren't battle hardened enough yet.

Our forward line is 1 dimensional, Kersten will get tired by the end of the year.

We should be restructuring for next year not bothering with the same failed setup.

We will probably finish 6th cos of our easy draw, maybe win 1 final then get destroyed in a semi final.

Then we can all cheer on Port to beat Freo, Sydney and the Hawks.

Cool. So then you are out for the rest of the year, as you already have us done. No need for anymore complaints from you or criticism till 2015. Enjoy your time away.

Sweet.

You don't play your best midfielder and best player up forward for long periods when the side has struggled to win clearances unless he's injured....therefore he shouldn't be playing.

I'm not sure about anyone else, but I'm gobsmacked Jansen hasn't debuted as yet given our struggles in this department...instead they gift games to Smedts.
Despite being injured he was our best player last night and we would of lost the game if he wasnt playing and our season would be over. Is that what you want?

It would be handy if a team like Richmond, Adelaide, Essendon or West Coast really hit form.

Let's put our own average form to one side and assume we finish on 16 wins, i still have us out of the top 4. We probably need 17 wins and even then we need at least one team to drop an easy one.

I didn't see the last game, but was listening to the ABC call - they were reporting Selwood did his hammy during the first quarter, and instead of being subbed out, moved forward. By pure luck, the move won us the game.

As SJ gets continually picked, even though he's seriously injured and underdone (ala Tommy last year), and guys are rushed back into the team without proper prep (eg Caddy and Christensen), it seems as if the MC haven't learnt a thing from last year's debacle (ie Tommy and Varcoe).

But as they are not idiots, one is lead to conclude the MC don't rate, or are yet to have faith, in some of the younger guys. So they are throwing the dice more, taking chances with the niggles, hoping it can come together 'come finals time.'

Chance and hope - you need it to win games. But when it starts to be all you have...

I'm on record as saying this isn't our year.

But.....never say die.;)

Kersten is going to get tired by the end of the year? He only just got in and its round 15!! It nearly is the end of the year! Kersten will be ok.

Our backline is versatile and it can be tall, or quick - depending on personnel. Blicavs, Mackie, Bews, Varcoe, aren't slow. Our backline is our strength.

We won't make the top 4, and we shouldn't knock ourselves out trying.

Better we take the motto "We Will Take Them On Anywhere, Anytime" into the finals. After last season, I sure don't want another home final. lol

ps I just read the above, and I've convinced myself we can't lose! :D

There are a lot of sentiments here in both posts that I agree with. Its easy to paint it all in the sombre tones of the negative but I don't think its the full story. Its also hard to be realistic about our place when we know the feeling of winning, and when and if we get it right we can still do it while right in front of us we can see we are no longer great

Every week we play there are more and more indicators that we are a chainsaw juggler on rollerblades , trying to keep the act all fluid and happening while moving around and coping with changing conditions, sort of worrying about the worse case of a bloody end.
But there is a certain type of attraction to all of that.

Having watched Geelong for too many years , watched them blow good list after good list , to finally get a side and an era like we had was like getting your superannuation after spending years working in a tough job. It was the pay off , it was deserved , there was no charity in it. And for me there was a sense of relief to finally get it done. Of course it became clear how good this group was , to win 1 would have been such a huge under achievement that the relief , the reprieve was a temp easing. The pressure I felt , probably unrealistically , was that this was it , it was our chance of a life time to get some back on the dreaded greedy enemies that seemed to bask in our constant underachievement.

And then it happened. In 08 .To them. Ohh please its not all some grand delusion is it? We are the real deal aren't we?

So to then to get 09 thru much harder work , one certainly felt there was the days of certainty were gone. Then in 10 the year of the long kiss goodnight , coach and star departs a season of such sweet sorrow and by the PF V the Pies , the wheels were falling off... if there was an AFL Morgue we were in it. But somehow like some urban myth story , we were not dead , there was a pulse and we added a new coach , a couple of fresh faces , the old one went one more for the road and managed get of third and perhaps most unlikely, V the side that inflicted the pain the year before. Sweet.

There was no doubt on our club , 3 in an era made us one of the greatest, arguably achieving so much against all logic of an even comp.

So now here we are , we are not what we were. The days of obvious wine and glory are past. The cups are in the window and there is little pressure of expectation. The days where we all knew how the story would end , week after week are are gone and each week brings its new twist. And that has its own upside. How engrossing is a movie where you just know the ending cause its just another slap bang shootit up run of the mill chewingum blockbuster? Throw in a crap star with a few alien car things. So what. Blah. What we have here is a story where each week is really unknown. We could fall in heap or develop or who knows what. What we have here is ride with no certainty. We have a probable outcome but know one really knows for sure.

So I'll balance my hope with an underlying defense of probability. And see how it pans outs. My logical guess is cynical is correct and we should have a focus on the future but my emotional hope always lies with Daz , someway , somehow we just may do it and with this movie I'll be staying till the credits roll.

Its the little tags after the credits that make it worthwhile. As Cynical said, there are some good reasons to consider us done. And when its over its time to reassess and look back to learn to move forward. But for me, at 10-4 with the list in massive transition, 2600 games of experience gone from us (which is more experience than most teams have on their list I might add), under 20 game players coming into the system and making difference to side, its a but hard to call the season over.

There is no doubt for us to win it all we need some massive good fortune, happy ball bounces and no more injuries. Is that possible - yes, likely, probably not but I'm not calling the fat lady anywhere near us yet.

You only have to look at the ladder to realise that we are in big trouble.

The 3 immediately above us smashed us.
Our percentage is weak.
And we aren't even playing like a top 4 side.

The positives are;

We've got 8 weeks to start playing like a top 4 side.
Hawthorn and Sydney still have to play each other.
Port and Sydney still have to play each other.
We still have to play Freo.
We still have to play Hawthorn.
Hawthorn and Freo still have to play each other.
Port and Freo still have to play each other.

So if we can get it together, some doors can definitely open.

Im as 1/2 full as anyone but its pretty clear that we have been playing some shabby doodoo footy of late. We have also been finding a way to win. We are 10-4 after all.

Now, its a long road to the GF. However, things that would help us to get there…

Selwood to get fit and play uninhibited.
SJ - see above
Caddy match fit.
Bundy - see Caddy.
Kersten to continue his climb into the AFL ranks
HT - fit and healthy.
Mitch, Hypen, Bews, Murda, Blitz, to just lessen their drop off by 10% and continue to develop another 10%.
Stokesy back fit.
Tommahawk - just keep offering Tommahugs!
For us to take full benefit of our schedule for the next 6 weeks.
Jimmy, Kel, Mack, Domsy and Boris to lift by 5%
Daws to get confident and back to where he was before his knee last year… Id say lift by 10%.

The VFL squad to keep producing like they did last week against the Blues.

Now it seems like a lot by if each person does their thing, we would be, one that day, unbeatable.

Just need that for 3 hrs each week for the next 14 weeks.

Easy:cool:

It's difficult to know where we're at. We just got over the line vs Richmond, Essendon and Carlton. Had of we dropped 2 of those and our season would be looking a lot different. I don't believe for one minute this is from a heavy training load as we have been playing this way for 6 weeks which is far too long for a heavy training load. As far as Selwood up forward goes imo I wont be surprised if he has a niggle that will require surgery at the end of the year, the club may have thought its better to keep him playing at 80% than miss him for 4-6 weeks. All imo of course.

Being optimistic I think we need to finish 4th and hope Hawthorn finishes top, beat them in the qualifying final and earn our selves a home PF. Every week though this season feels more like 2012 and that year I really had my hopes up that we could win it from outside top 4.
