Prior to trade period I was all about Hawthorn landing Wingard over Shiel (refer to post history to confirm), if it ever came down to that. IMO Wingard is obviously a more versatile player than Shiel, who is strictly a midfielder. Whereas Wingard can play as a crumbling forward, leading forward, high half forward and a midfielder. It's just better value for our money IMO and allows for greater flexibility with our squad.

As trivial as it sounds - I've had him in my SC Draft side three years running (always picking him with my 3rd or 4th pick), so I've watched him quite a lot over the last few years as we take our league seriously.

In short; Wingard has that magic ability that very few have.

When he's up and running in the forward line he's very hard to defend against, as he does unorthodox things. He's strong in one v ones, has elite skills and is evasive.

When he's played in the midfield he's a quality clearance player, despite his size and perceived stereotype. He's got lightning hands and is extremely instinctive with his stoppage work. He tends to rush his kicks out of stoppages situations, or at least bombs it forward quickly, which again I feel is just instinctive play on his part. So that's something he can work on IMO, and I think he will be able to with Mitchell taking the brunt of the clearance work. He also tackles hard and works very hard around the stoppages - again it's something that I think gets missed due to the stereotype of what kind of player he is (that elusive small forward).

Last season he started off very slowly and it seemed like there were some issues - which seemingly was the case given what has been posted on here, re: Chad Cornes, etc. He was apparently disappointed at not being moved to the midfield.

However halfway through the year he seemingly pulled his finger out, or was moved into the midfield at least, and his form skyrocketed. He was Port's best midfielder from that point on.

Honestly he's a top 10 player in the comp when he's on, he's got it all to offer.

One of the true elite talents at Port, along with Robbie Gray. Have always thought he was insanely good. Here's to the Hawks lifting him back up to where he has been at his absolute peak.

Incredible get. Sad to see Burton go, you just don't know where he might end up ceiling wise. But not unhappy to get the Real SA Chad at the Hawks (as opposed to the brain damaged version stinking up the airwaves on 'AFL Meed duh'.

Sad to see Chad go - on top of the emotion inducing football he can produce, he was always generous with his time for my family on club days and social events.

You have a valuable footballer and a valuable person. Based on his past, he’ll be in the headlines for all the right reasons in the future.

Congratulations and thanks to your club and supporters for being professional and positive about this.

It seems we've payed overs with the 2nd round pick but as usual Hawthorn are willing to pay "overs" to secure their targets.

Can't wait to see Chadwick in the brown and gold.
Overs??? For a player that is better than Rioli and Burgoyne combined?

Don't buy into the biased Vic media aspect.

He will also get the frees he never gets at Port.

Imagine the Kornes meltdown if he's the number one free kick for player next year. Epic.

This guy is a star who can do just about anything on the footy field. His talents and natural instincts were curbed in recent years by our negative coaching staff but give him the chance to shine and he's a human highlight reel. Put it this way, there's a reason 90% of guernseys at Port games have #20 on the back. Please look after him for us and enjoy the ride.

We will treat him like family.

go away Rioli and Burgoyne are worth three times this chappy. For me he has always been Hodgey's chew toy........

Stoked to have Chad! He, Bruest and Gunston will be very hard to stop.

Think we overpaid slightly but at the end of the day we got the players we wanted so overall it’s a win.

Sad to see Burton leave but Wingard is a proven elite player.

Clueless, you’ll see now.
Feel free to apologise in a few years time.
He smashes both on stats alone...in a comparatively crap team and younger!

We didnt pay overs, as much as i enjoyed watching ryan play, Chad is exactly what we were missing this year to go to the next level.

We needed extra fire power/flare in the forward line as well as the extra pace and clearance in the middle when mitchell and jags were shut down, and the chad is the man to do it.

Welcome Chad, cant wait till next season starts.

how does he go re doing the team stuff? obviously his highlight reel is as good as anyone's, but how often does he go for the impossible and come up short when there's a player in a better position? not having a crack at him, genuine question.
