West Coast or Adelaide - Who is better placed?

Remove this Banner Ad

This thread is like Gina Rinehart and Ajay Rochester (2014 version) arguing about who is hotter.

Both lists are far from it, but aren't as bad as Carlton or Richmond.

West Coast have been smashed by injuries and Crows have been smashed by expansion clubs and average trade deals.

Crows top 5 are better, but West Coasts next 10 are better than the Crows' betteso at present West Coast are the r side, but that will change going forward (until Dangerfield comes to Geelong) if the rest of the Crows players can catch up.

I disagree - how can you say West Coast are better than Adelaide

Adelaide were in front in the last qtr against Geelong - where as the Eagles were totally non competitive- ok the Eagles had a few out - but so have the Crows - Walker and Henderson come to mind

Go back to the last 2 home games the Eagles had last year - Geelong beat them by 12 goals and the Crows beat them by about 14 goals- the Crows are far better placed going forward than the Eagles

Eagles wont make the 8 - and along with Carlton and Richmond wont win a premiership in the next 5 years

Good point. We were with you guys for most of the game but got run off our legs in the last term.

Can add Otten, Lynch, van Berlo, Laird & Douglas to that list as well.

Forgot about this one. Whilst it was a dead rubber, we completely demolished WCE on their home ground only 7 months ago.

Not saying WCE are shit but they've played some pretty ordinary teams thus far and when they finally played someone decent they were uncompetitive. Still think they can make the finals but, like the Crows, will be around that 6th-8th mark and make little impact. Wouldn't surprise me if neither made the 8 though.

A few out? Glass, Shuey, Masten, LeCras, Hurn, Rosa (not counting Waters). That's 5 of our top 10 plus our wingman. Put those players into our side and take out Geelong's best 5 and see how we go (not saying we'd win).

You really think that was an accurate reflection of both teams? That was the epitome of dead rubbers. We beat Adelaide in Adelaide earlier in the year when there was actually something to play for.

You seem pretty sure of that. I'd give us a 60/40 chance of making the 8 right now, pending injuries.

Easiest draw we have had since inception. If we had a draw like this in the first five years port would have joined the "new wafl" - not the "trying ever so hard to remain the vfl"

Yes and we were missing Van berlo, Walker, Otten, Reilly, Henderson, Douglas, Lynch and Laird and still put up a far superior fight. We belted saint kilda away, you limped past them at home. You guys will improve this year no doubt but we are in a better position currently.

Ahh, I love this technique of assessing where are a side is at. Sydney belted Adelaide + GWS beat Sydney = GWS are better than Adelaide. If we beat Port this week, that must mean we're undoubtably better than Adelaide too.

I'd say 3-1 is a better position than 1-3.

I think the Eagles have got a very bleak future - their recruiting has been very ordinary to say the least

Go back to 2008 - when Geelong flogged the Eagles by 135 points at Subiaco - who were playing for the Eagles that night - Butler - Rosa - Masten - S Selwood- Priddis - there plodders - and ordinary footballers - and yet there still in your team- your going no where with those blokes !

The one glimmer of hope was Nic Nat - hes either injured - or hasnt come on . Hurn and Le Cras have got long term injuries - and there must be serious doubt about Le Cras - broke the same arm twice - thats just bad luck - but its happened

Cox and Glass are coming to an end - The Eagles have no depth whatsoever - as proved by Saturday night - plus there reserves team - ie East Perth - got flogged in the WAFL on the weekend by over 100 points - that shows the cupboard is pretty bare for talent

Recruiting is the name of the game - i can remember Peter Matera begging the Eagles to recruit Jetta ( went to the swans) instead the Eagles pass up on him - and recruit another dud in Sheppard

If you ruled a line under Hawthorn and Geelong today - and for the next 5 years they recruited duds - guess what - they would both go down to the bottom of the ladder - their culture/history/jumper is not going to save them - just like Carlton have found out

Eagles will win 9 games maximum this year

Except that wasn't the technique used at all - he was comparing both teams' results against the same opponents (Geelong and St Kilda).

I know; I extended it.

1. None of Rosa, Masten, Scott Selwood played that night.

2. 16 of the 22 that did are no longer on the list, let alone in the side. The 6 that remain are Butler, Cox, Glass, LeCras, Priddis - our 5 oldest players - and Schofield.

3. Players on the list in 2008 who did not feature in the game include Kennedy, Waters, Mackenzie and Hurn - plus Scott Selwood, Masten and Rosa who are "plodders".

4. Players who were not on the list in 2008 include Darling, Naitanui, Shuey, Gaff, Sheed, Yeo and Wellingham.

5. *they're

How is a game that happened in 2008 relevant? The fact you can name only five players in that loss speaks volumes of the kind of turnover of our list since then. Rosa, Masten and Selwood are not plodders and Masten and Scooter have improved substantially since then. Rosa is a serviceable player who has been very good this year. Also Butler is nowhere near our best 22 and will retire at the end of the year. Naitanui is playing with limited match fitness and soreness so he will probably be rested soon. By the end of the year he should be back to somewhere near his best. We also have adequate replacements for Cox and Glass in NicNat/Lycett/Sinclair and Mackenzie/Brown/Schofield. You are also wrong about Lecras and Hurn. Both are only out for 3 to 4 weeks, hardly long term.

With regards to the recruiting and list management, we have not recruited just duds over five years. There have been some flops but also some very good picks. I would say Notte (pick 20), Swift (pick 20), Weedon (pick 22) and Newman (pick 23) have been failures, all for different reasons. Guys like Masten (pick 3), Selwood (pick 22), Shuey (pick 18), Nic Nat (pick 2), Gaff (pick 4), Darling (pick 26), Lycett (pick 28), Hutchings (pick 60) have all been good picks relative to where they were taken at the time. I didn't include Ebert and Stevens in these lists because they requested trades. The good thing is we haven't seriously mucked up any top 10 picks (I still hold hopes for Sheppard). We have also been successful recently with rookie picks in Sinclair, Tunbridge and Jamie Bennell and have acquired Cripps, Wellingham, Ellis and Yeo in the last two years through trade/free agency all of which are young talented players to top up a decent young midfield.

I agree that the list has limited midfield depth and not enough top end talent in this area but we are well stocked with regards to quality in the defence, forward line and ruck. The midfield is the easiest in comparison to fix. Anyhow with regards to our current midfield, most are 24 or less so there is still improvement left. The upcoming drafts will be used to get more quality midfielders (i.e. Alec Waterman). Simmo hasn't yet had the opportunity to make massive changes to the list so I expect at the end of the year the dead wood will be cleared so we can make a push for a premiership in 2016/17.

See above. None of Rosa, Masten and Selwood were even playing in that game.

So after 22 games it appears neither club is going anywhere in a great hurry.
We wont be unless we have a massive clean out with the coaching dept. Skill levels gone backwards. Fitness a massive fail. Game day preps flakey as poo.. Unless changes are made Sando will find himself spending 2015 nervously balancing on a blade.

Adelaide and West Coast mirroring each other a fair bit this season... a whole lot of ordinary with some big wins against shit teams

My bias says Adelaide are better placed for next season - But I have nothing to base that on except for that I want it to be true...

It would be very frustrating to support either of these teams.

I would have to say that West Coast are better placed going forward than Adelaide, though.
