West Coast or Adelaide - Who is better placed?

IMO, more foolish as Weagles had nothing to play for - unlike earlier in the season when both teams had plenty to play for.

Interesting. I would content that a claim of "we had nothing to play for" was an excuse, whereas an observation that "the Crows focussed on body building and strength and so were too heavy and slow and lacked fitness" was an admission of a bad strategy. To my mind to offer an excuse is more foolish than to admit an error in strategy. To each his own I suppose.

Two very evenly matched sides. That round 23 match last year really wasn't a good indicator of who is better placed since the Eagles were fielding their b/c side and had players who had completely lost faith in the coach. The eagles have a better defence and forward line although the Crows midfield is much, much better. I predict the two teams will have similar 2014 seasons, both challenging for the lower spots of the top 8.

As much as i do totally respect your post and your optimism, there isn't a side in the AFL that wouldn't want Dangerfield. I mean, he is in a different class then most players.

I do agree however, that Jacobs was burnt out and another quality ruckman (Whether Jenkins or traded) would be very beneficial to our side.

if a gun was held to my head i would grudgingly accept him at the eagles

Oh god yes - make it so

The way Adelaide play is too freewheeling for mine. West Coast were similar last year but that is not usually in their make up and I expect they'll be better under Simpson.

The ones like Darling, Gaff, Shuey et al were all nominated before and no longer met requirements last year.
Shuey's been on an AFL list for over five years (as long as Hill, Sloane or Naitanui, one year longer than Fyfe, one year less than Dangerfield) so yeah, I'm not sure he counts.

The Eagles are a bit of a mystery to me. Last year they were so affected by injuries and general bad form at times, that i'm really unsure what the baseline is. On paper at full strength last year I had them pegged for a top 6 finish easily. This year they've gotten rid of a few older players and get a few back from injury, and a new coach to boot. I really don't know where to rate them just yet. But like Adelaide i'm leaning towards 2013 being an aberration for the Eagles rather than the beginning of a downward trajectory.

To the OP's question i'm quite bullish about Adelaide's prospects this year, but for the reason's outlined above, really aren't sure whether West Coast are placed better or not.

West Coast have shown significant improvement this pre season with a 3-0 record.

Wouldn't be surprised if they made the 8 this year.

What odds are they to play finals? Definitely worth a sneaky punt IMO

Why all the threads about West Coast. Adelaide has by far a better list. The new ducking rules will have an impact on West Coast this year and unfortunately Nic Nat is still injured. Season 2014 is already over before it began.

I don't like trollers which means I don't like you.

I actually think Adelaide is better placed, expect them to be really pushing for top four.

There off season has been great and with new additions like Pod and Betts and young Matt Crouch should make a impact as well, there midfield is just superb and still have a lot of break out contenders led by Matt Wright.

West Coast will have another rebuild soon IMO.

A rebuild of the midfield perhaps, but the rest is perfectly fine and primed to play finals.

Your back line is a bit overrated IMO.

Glass is getting on, but still class. Mckenzie is young and was border line AA last year. Hurn is one of the biggest kicks in the game and perfect in the back and we now have Yeo one of a Brisbanes best young players. I'm very happy with that line. There ain't much to rebuild in that department.

It's a bit silly to suggest WC require a rebuild when the majority of their midfield are only approaching their
'prime' now. It's what they produce in the next 2-3 years that will be really telling.

In my view we require another genuine, damaging offensive midfielder capable of taking the heat off of Shuey or Gaff somewhat. Our midfield suffers from having few genuine weapons in there, and so Shuey and Gaff become easy targets for the opposition to close down. The introduction of Wellingham has helped this problem somewhat - and personally I'm hoping Elliott Yeo may emerge as another damaging onballer in the next 12 months or so. Adding Naitanui, Wellingham and Yeo gives us a much more attacking edge in an otherwise bland and slow midfield.

We are also probably in need of another genuine wingman that can break lines. The likes of Gaff, Rosa and Masten can accumulate and run all day but we genuinely lack that explosive run from stoppages.

Haven't read the whole thread but IMO, Adelaide is better placed. West Coast could make the 8 this year but have no chance of a flag with their current list so I wouldn't be surprised if they "plan for the future" a bit and load up for a shot post the retirement of Glass, Cox, etc

Both won't make the 8. Few injuries to the both of them and they are nothing.
