Why the **** did we pay so much for Carlisle and Goddard then???? Someone forgot to tell the recruiters. Both are huge lumbering types.
Bottomline is we don't currently have the bigger bodied defenders so we have to rely on rebound.
Once they are both in form and available, stopping key forwards will be a priority in conjunction with providing strong rebound.
A change in gameplan out of current necessity not a deep philosophical change in thinking.

Thing about Goddard and Carlisle is that despite being tall men, neither are really slow players and both have good kicks on them. They will definitely have an offensive aspect to their game when playing but Goddard isnt quite there yet.

Also expecting two rucks to play with one player to rest up back for more defensive support.

Don't really agree with that call about the plan.
It could be as simple as Goddard isn't ready and lee is on the way out. With Carlisle/Goddard our big defenders, Webster/Roberton the mid sized rebounders. He doesn't fit anywhere, and tbh he's going to be 26 before next season starts and under 20 games played (15 so far) so he's not going to be much more than a depth player.

Lee's papers must surely be stamped.

Really was OK against Hawks and far from the worst against GWS.

Obviously not rated by Richo.
Yeah clearly Roberton is preferred - so is it knowing when to defend when to attack, pace, general football smarts or what. Marking and kicking I'd prefer Lee, run - well Robbo has it all over him, defensive capabilities clearly Robbo is ahead there as well.

Small sample I know but interesting to see the comparison for the year

Um pretty sure we drafted Goddard and didn't pay a lot for him. Best available at the time and we didn't have Carlisle back then.

You can't just have 1 of a type on your list. what happens if one gets injured? If they both can't be fit in the 22 then one will look elsewhere and we get a decent trade.

Exactly! We are building a squad, not a best 18 or a best 22, more like a best 35.

And if we push players like minchi and curren to the 34th or 35th best players on our list I know we are doing something right.

On Minchington, he's far from done. With Fisher to retire, there are still blokes on the list who are out of contract at the end of the year who can't really get near a game (Shenton, Saunders, Curren, Murdoch, Wright) and you would imagine they'll be shown the door first, not to mention someone like Tom Lee who everyone thinks will struggle. I think you'll find he's a year-to-year proposition, but has been for a few years already. My money's on Minch getting another contract for 2017.

I think it's between Sinclair and Templeton, but I feel both get on the plane (as well as Pierce). Murdoch is probably 25th man. The wide spaces may push Templeton ahead of Sinclair - Templeton's two highest possession games have been as Domain Stadium and Adelaide Oval (big grounds).

I think Gilbert goes to the resting ruckman, Dempster goes to Kennedy and Roberton goes to Darling. The other option is possibly Webster on Darling.

If Pierce plays it will be a baptism of fire, but he's deserved the call up. I think he's only been an emergency once, and that was at the end of 2014 (where we were finishing last).

Wouldn't Lee suit this game plan though. Good user and intercept mark. Might get beaten one on one but at the moment seems like we're rolling that dice anyway

I don't think Carlisle plays anything like a huge lumbering type and that makes 2 anyway. I was talking about those wanting another so I'm struggling to understand your post.

I cant remember a backman resting up back in the last 30 years of AFL footy. I don't think we would start now. If he wanted a tall down back he could have just played Goddard or Lee because the amount of time the second guy would spend in the ruck makes them a backman and not a ruckman. Surely only one ruckman can play this week.

I don't get the lack of love for Tom Lee either. If he's ever going to do a job it's with a key back, like Fisher, being out.
Would appear as though his papers are stamped.

I think our backline will be tested, but the most important thing for them is when they get the ball- DONT BUTCHER IT coming up the ground. Unless Lee has let the coaches tyres down on purpose, I see no reason not to be playing him, especially with Fisher out. Minch is like a lot of players who look a million bucks in the VFL, but can't take the step up sadly, and has had enough chances.

Can't see how Minch will be delisted when there are guys older than him not getting a game that will all go before him. Meatball is only 22.

Isnt it 4 and a bit years in the system? He isn't going to improve our list as a few others also wont. It will get down to how many picks we want. If I was him I would be worried. People say saunders and Holmes but they aren't part of the equation. There is curren, Delaney, Murdoch, Lee and Minchinton and probably Fisher retiring. All of them wont go. I like the short straw idea but none of them do it for me.

In a way its encouraging we have this glut of up-and-coming youth, and we're playing competitive football, and we have the potential to cut a lot of deadwood (for want of a more appropriate term) from the list at the end of the year.

In my earlier assessment I had forgotten Holmes and Delaney. Plenty out before Minchington, but perhaps others will get an opportunity for a reprieve later in the year.

Not having watched much of Murdoch in the VFL could anyone give me an update on where the club (and Richo) expect him to fit into our future side. I must admit I have only seen his senior games and I do like what I have seen but I am unsure about what position best suits him.

We all seemed pretty worried about how much North Melbourne's big forward line were going to dominate us at the weekend when we saw the team announcement and we set up and played it brilliant down back then. So I'll concede that Richo seems to know a bit more about the game than I do and won't try and second guess how he's going to set up. If we're unsure exactly how he's going to set up, maybe he's trying to spring an element of surprise on the Eagles with the provisional squad named?

Anyway, hopefully welcome Sinclair back into the team this week. If we keep producing the same effort and heart as last week we will get rewarded eventually.

I know there have been a lot of disappointments recently which could impact morale but I honestly believe that we are building what is going to end up a mentally tough team and once we get on a winning run and gain the confidence that comes with it, it will be hard to break.

He plays a similar game to Tom Lee, he goes for his marks and can set up with his kicking but he has no real turn of speed and plays as a one on one defender against gorilla forwards. I can't see why you wouldn't play someone like Lee or Delaney as a Carlisle stand in to practice for the future even though they are both obviously gone at years end. Roberton is a tall running player like Gilbo. Neither can play KPD to a high standard. I don't get the selections at all this year. generally we have done well after the mystery selections but we have still won two games only. Is the selection process the problem? Apparently not one umpiring decision has cost us so we are ****ing something up somewhere. Are we going to completely redo our game plan when Carlisle is back?
