Who Should Be In The Hall Of Fame, and Who Should Be A Legend?

We are due a media inductee, I suspect Dennis Cometti or Bruce McAvaney may get a gig
Likely Cometti as there is a bit of playing and coaching too, and McAvaney more multi-sport

Were Voss Hird and Buckley substantially better players than Ricciuto, Goodes, West, Crawford, Akermanis, Black, R.Harvey, Kouta, Cousins etc?

They were the big 3 but I'm not sure they were head and shoulders above all those guys

Goodes will be a legend you can almost count on it. 2 Brownlows, B&F in both premiership years, plus he is indigenous. Should be a slam dunk.

the very upper echelon (ie: legend) players get brownlow votes even as a KPP. Lockett averaged double the number of brownlow votes. Same with Dunstall. Same with Carey.

Hart didn't get that many because he wasn't that good and wasn't the best player in his team.
Hart was easily along with Kevin Bartlett the best players of the Richmond sides from 67-74, Brownlow votes are overrated, give me premierships over Brownlows

By that measure Robert Harvey is inferior to Cale Morton.

I doubt many people will agree with me here but I think "Legend" status should also consider the actual person and not just his stats as a player. So if an amazing player who was a terrible human being is up for Legend status he should not be included due to his questionable personality.

I would not include Gary Ablett Snr, Wayne Cary, Leigh Matthews for example. All three are/were rather terrible people.

Ken Farmer and Russell Ebert not named as inaugural Legend's tells you all you need to know about this farce of Victorian jerkfest.

It has as much credence as the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, who this year are inducting Whitney Houston ahead of Motorhead and the MC5.

Future Hall of Famer, not close to legend however

if Fyfe gets a 3rd brownlow he will be a walk up start.

He has also been in the best 1-2 players in the comp from about 2013-2019, thats a similar period of dominance to GAJ/Judd who will be likely Legends.

If people want Hird/Voss/Buckley in as a Legend then Fyfe is straight in.

Can we please stop conflating player’s achievements with their coaching achievements and also their admin and media work.

The Hall of Fame isn’t there to recognise good blokes for their overall contribution to footy in all facets.

Players get inducted for what they achieved as players

Coaches get inducted for their coaching achievements

Administrators and media servants are inducted for their lifetime of work in those particular fields.

John Longmire wasn’t a Hall of Fame player. He kicked 500 goals in his career (averaging 3.63 goals per game across his best six seasons) when scoring was at an all-time high and the champion forwards were averaging well over 4.5 goals per game.

He has done a good job as coach of the Swans, but he would need more than one flag to be inducted as a Hall of Fame coach.
You know it is funny you mention Longmire's goal kicking stats. You do realise he spent parts of his career playing in defence as well, don't you?

There are players that are not as good as John Longmire that are already in the HOF, including players from my own club.

A true sign of this is that there is probably more likelihood of Andrew Obst getting in to the Hall of Fame before his father, uncle or grandfather

On this line of thinking, yep Fyfe & Pav will walk into the Hall as soon as they are eligible BUT don't even start on the legend discussion.

Legend is for the cream, a lot of players deserve to be inducted into the hall, but only 1 or 2 a decade are worth considering as Legends.

As for Cotchin, he will end up in the Hall ( may have to wait a year or two ), but that's as far as he should go.

3 medals is an automatic elevation, well only if won in the Victorian comp. 3 in the AFL would have to be a certainty on that form.

Anyone who has won 3x Brownlows has Legend status - Hayden Bunton Sr (who also has 3x Sandovers), Dick Reynolds, Bob Skilton & Ian Stewart.

The only 4 time Magarey Medallist (Russell Ebert) has yet to be elevated, and the only 4 time Sandover Medallist (Bill Walker) has also yet to be elevated.

One of the pre-1991 3x Magarey Medallists has been inducted (Barrie Robran), whilst Tom MacKenzie, Wacka Scott, Dan Moriarty, Len Fitzgerald and Lindsay Head have been overlooked.

Triple Sandover medallists fair a little better with Haydn Bunton Sr, Polly Farmer and Barry Cable all elevated, likely due to also having VFL careers, whilst Merv McIntosh has been snubbed to date.
