Player Watch Will Hamill - Delisted

How many delisted rookies go on to have good careers?
James Podsiadly has the distinction of being delisted twice (Ess, Coll) as an AFL listed rookie in his early 20s before having a short but spectacular 100 game career in his late 20s/early 30s.

But your point is very well made, history shows by overwhelming numbers that players who are delisted as rookies are finished.

Hugh Greenwood the only current one, I think.

Greenwoods career has been average at best.

Even at his peak when he was still with the crows he went missing in action for large periods of most games. Did some very flashy things and tackled like a maniac.. but not much else.

Very average player.

Don’t reckon he got fully fit in terms of the role that he was best at

Surely thats it now?

Out of contract at the end of the season and on the rookie list. 6 years at the club for 41 pretty unimpressive games. Never got the pill more than 17 times in an AFL match despite playing most of it off of half back.

Don't waste any more games on him.
We'll take him at Collingwood, gutsy player in the Nathan Murphy mould.

A little unlucky IMO, would have sooner kept Will than Brodie Smith given their age and 2024 form.

Seems a nice enough bloke, but a vanilla footballer with a propensity to get concussed to easy/often.

I'm sad to see Hamill go. I always thought he was unlucky when he went out of the side, either with concussion or being dropped. He has a lot of good attributes for a small defender: toughness, defensively good, lightning speed, good kick. Hopefully for his sake another club will give him an opportunity. I still think he could make a good AFL footballer.

I wonder if playing Smith until his trigger will backfire in the long run. If I was looking at recruiting any of Adelaide's delisted players, Hamill would be the one.

Terrible shame that we are forced to keep Smith and lose a depth player like Hamill, who did look perfectly ok when played this year. Surely, given our list, we keep 5% up our sleeves to pay out players that are no longer up to it. I know we wouldn't have $750k for Laird, but surely we've got $400k to cover Smith's trigger.
