Autopsy Cats lose to Saints by 7 points - should have been more

Another game where we've been jumped in the first term - go in at the first change 4-5 goals down, manage to keep it around that margin for most of the next 2 quarters, and then make a late charge at the end to go down by a single figure margin.

Don’t think it was as bad as everyone is making out. It’s a long season, but it was great to see the fight back led by youngsters. Knevitt, Clohesy, O’Sullivan and Clark all had really strong passages. If that’s our depth comes the dog days of July/august, I think we are going to be just fine. Our team will learn so much from that L, put it in the rear view, and move forward

Fight back… shouldn’t have needed to fight back at all

O'Sullivan . . . . is anyone else as impressed as I am?
I thought he was so good. Began to dominate the air and even had a go at goal in the dying stages. Looks the complete footballer.

I mean he looks every bit as good as what De Koning was in 2022 and that's just three games into a career.
He was briilliant.

Except that rush of blood to the head shot from 50 out when there were many, many, better options - but that comes with experience

Easy to say, where do you get one?

That's the $64 question isn't it. Really we should have drafted Grundy (we all know this). In the present tense of viability we ironically should have gone harder to get someone like Meek. But i agree getting a top 5 ruck is very hard to prise out. Watching gc be stacked for talls makes me sad.

Meek would have been a great get

At the game tonight, that first half was something else, we barely touched the ball, the stats backed that up when the Saints were literally 80 odd possessions in front, just goes to show we are a Bailey Smith in the midfield away from being ordinary.

That being said, I thought Jack Henry was great, under siege all game and he was so sure footed, he is back! I like Mitch Knevitt, he does a lot of hard stuff, doesn’t make too many mistakes, but before someone like Seeds drops in, we need more possies from him. Holmes just drifts in and out if games and that’s his most annoying attribute, we needed him tonight.

Humphries got a bit of it but made some glaring errors, thought SDK was ok, but then you look at Marshall’s game and he has to be better, although Marshall last week was hopeless and underdone.

Handball chains hurt us, the saints saw what Freo did to us in the third and put it together for a half.

Thought Neale was pretty good, the small brigade were pretty ordinary tonight and Dempsey although the goals were nice doesn’t do much else for a wingman. Ollie Henry had his terrible game.

Well done to Ross & the Saints, out thought us and out coached us and on the ground outworked us. Yes we could have won but we didn’t deserve too.

Shouldn't really have any more effect than playing any other away game, or should be less due to the lesser travel demands. Not having regular games there hasn't really stopped us winning games in Adelaide or Perth.

I agree it shouldn't, but playing under the roof is a different prospect to playing at any other standard ground which is open air

I'm not in a position to look up the stats at the moment, but I'd be curious to see our record at Marvel when it was roof open for games versus it now being roof closed for all games. And this isn't just for us, but with the roof closed, has it increased the home ground advantage for Marvel tenants versus those who only play at the venue once or twice a season?

While we generally only travel to Optus once a year, we played 3 games in Adelaide last year - that's more games then our combined 24/25 seasons for games at Marvel

Butchered our I[emoji6][emoji[emoji6][emoji6]] entries and lacked composure. Our game is not built for that ground so I wouldn’t lose sleep.

Young kids will learn a bit.

And for those who said pick Duncan. Crikey - he would’ve been horribly exposed on that ground. Great we got a look at Clohesy. He looks a likely type.

As for Mullin. Keep playing him. With Bews out long term Mullin has to get games. He’s playing a role in an area where we’re exposed - defending small forwards. Be patient

100% disagree on Mullin...
Mullin needs to go back to the VFL.. I don't care if we dont have another small defender. He needs to show form in the VFL, or even just to get named in the best in the VFL world be a start..
His that far away on belonging in AFL level it's not funny

So that's 4 in a row lost to St Kilda at Marvel?

And that script of coming back to almost pinch it seems familiar, too.

They won't be able to drop Ted Clohesy now, surely. Unlike some in the team, he doesn't play as if desperately attempting to mask his own weaknesses.
I absolutely love him. Kid is made of concrete

Flat about the start but probably the happiest i've been after a loss. I get the Clark pick now. Needs more muscle, but should be a player if he can stay fit. Osulllivan excellent. Neale solid. Came in expecting an easy win and got jumped. Props to the Saints, they executed all night and kept the pressure up. Lucky we could close the gap in the end and avoid % getting reamed.

Proud of the little comeback.
Clark, Knevitt, Neale, Clohesy, Humpries, O'Sullivan all gained valuable experience and were solid.
Clark and Knevitt shouldn't share a centre bounce together, at least for now.
Can't blame Mullin but playing him is like playing one man down.
Nah, we do it a lot, means nothing unless you actually win them.. or maybe are switched on from the get go

let me break this down for all cats supporters.

Losing a game against the Saints who are useless is a disgrace. This sort of game should have been a 5-6 goal win. The fact that we were clearly outplayed for 95% of the game is an indictment on us.

If you think I’m wrong, you’re an idiot and need to get help soon.

Tonight was a complete shit show!
